I think the advantage of additional spellbooks is that we could start writing the free spells you guys get at each level. I think that at the very least Morvan could train Kazan in 1st level spells, since that could take as little as 1 day, and it would keep him from being unable to reach 3rd level because of insufficient training.

I agree that having the spell ink for the additional spells would be nice but training should be top priority. The loss of Gregers and the other Northmen makes it hard to have Kazan giving no benefit (other than pack mule) to the group. With 3 magic missiles he could at least hang back and disrupt any spell caster.

The witch also had Sleep, which will be very helpful. I definitely think we should wait here to train Kazan in 1st level spells. It's inexpensive and quick, and there's a lot of bang for the buck. If he's 2nd level he'll have 4 first level spells. He'll also be able to keep gaining XP for another few weeks. We can spend a lot of time training soon for Kazan to learn 2nd level spells, Morvan to learn 3rd level MU spells, and Basil to learn 2nd level druid spells. Zinc will also need to learn 4th level spells soon (and shape change ability).

I think any non-named spell, but I don't know.

In general, it is any non-named spell. A couple of spells from UA are broken (like item) and those aren't discoverable.

XP for the week. Character | XP | Class | Level | Morvan | 29898/29898 | Cleric/Magic-user | 6/5 | Zinc | 53243 | Cleric | 6 | Basil | 40000 | Fighter/Thief/Bard | 5/6/6 | Kazan | 4950 | Monk*/Fighter*/Magic-User | 5*/6*/2 | Kimball | 77855 | Ranger | 6 |
Kazan gains level 2. Basil is XP capped because of lack of training; he won't gain any XP until he trains for 2nd level druid spells.

Bezmara's spellbooks weren't so much spellbooks as pieces of human/elf/beastman/whatever skin tied together, thus there is not room to write more spells. Considering Kazan and Morvan will have new spells to transcribe, we will need spell inks and spell books in the near future. But hey, it's your character. It will be amusing watching you try to reason with James every time you want to memorize a spell. Who said Morvan gets to carry all of the spellbooks? Kazan will just take the witch's spellbook if Morvan is unwilling to share all of the spellbooks. Morvan has already said he doesn't do the apprentice thing so Kazan has no reason to treat him with deference. If this means Kazan has to train himself I would rather do that then have to deal with the lack of cooperation. But I would rather not go that route. I think the game is much more fun when we work together (even if it isn't in character).

I don't think any of us are shedding tears because the guy with three classes is temporarily prevented from also becoming the highest level character. Kazan, on the other hand, definitely needs to train.

Should Kazan discover Identify as one of his first level spells? Do we have the ink and pearls to make use of it? Other than the box with straps are there other items that need identifying? I guess there are some pluses to determine for some weapons and armor.

Are there any other "must have" 1st level spells? Reduce or Enlarge? Feather Fall? You get to discover one at 1st and one at 2nd, right?

That is how I understand it. I was thinking Feather Fall for the other slot. Enlarge/Reduce would be nice at some point but you don't get much net change at 2nd level.

That's true, but Morvan is 5th level, and Kazan will become more powerful very quickly. If Winthrop, Dell and Antonus (and Samantha!) could figure out a way to behave civilly and share spells, I'm sure Morvan and Kazan can.

I am also a fan of Run and Unseen Servant. I think we discussed Run at some point and it was noted that you could charge every round. Does that sound right?
At second level I would like to get Levitate. Also I would like to try Vocalize. It might be useful to have if we are trying to sneak in and kill/capture the Jarl of the Marten clan.
I don't see much point in getting Strength. Kazan, Kimball and Basil are pretty much maxed out. I think only Zinc would benefit. Maybe later when the spell will last for most of a day or we have fighter NPCs again.
Do we already have Mirror Image? How about ESP?

Do we already have Mirror Image? How about ESP? We definitely have Mirror Image. 1st level: Find Familiar worked out well for Antonus. As a LG magic-user you could get a brownie! Comprehend Languages is always handy. I forget what Basil's read languages % is, but there are some things he can't read even still. Run would be good. That giant might not have gotten away. 2nd level: Levitate, hands down. Detect Invisibility?

Can I get a list of all of the magic user spells we have now? I pieced together the spells we have from the campaign journal. Besmara (3? folios) 1st | 2nd | 3rd | Affect Normal Fires | Forget | Dispel Magic | Alarm | Invisibility | Water Breathing | Detect Magic | Ray of Enfeeblement | Shocking Grasp | Sleep | Taunt |
Sleeping Jarls (3 traveling spellbooks) 1st | 2nd | 3rd | Affect Normal Fires | Continual Light | Dispel Magic | Armor | Mirror Image | Hold Person | Detect Magic | Web | Lightning Bolt | Magic Missile | Mount | Read Magic |
Pirates (2 traveling spellbooks) 1st | 2nd | Read Magic | Continual Light | Write | Stinking Cloud | Magic Missile | Sleep | Shield | Mending |
Scrolls (multiple) 1st | 2nd | 3rd | 4th | 5th | 6th | Read Magic | Continual Light | Haste | Dimension Door | Bigby’s Interposing Hand | Disintegrate | Magic Missile |
Also I know Morvan discovered Knock and Web. I am not sure which spellbooks they are written in. Anything else to add?

Level update: Zinc makes 7. Basil makes 7. Kimball makes 7. Kazan makes 3. Cullen makes 7. So Zinc can train for 4th level spells, Basil can train for 3rd. Plot update: Lots of running around. One sled back from the elves. Training done. Sigrfjord crossed. Hain avoided. People dissolved. Armor found. The others can fill in the details. Game update: We are playing next Sunday, Easter, though we'll be ending by 5 to accommodate holiday stuff. Training for Morvan/Kazan/Basil took 36 days and approximately 7500 gp. Kimball traveled alone, back to the Volkwood with Besmara's hide during the party's month-long hibernation. He encountered trolls (avoided), a sabretooth tiger (killed), tribesman (avoided), wolves (avoided), mastadon (fled from), elves (appeased) and recovered the sled with: the strange metal turtle shell (5000gp) the metal feathers (1400gp), jade mask (750gp), silk robes (250gp), strange white pelts (2000-10000gp??). The precious metals weighing 5000cn, worth 4000gp, were offered as weregild for the damaged Court and slain elves because there was no physical way Kimball could haul those out of there. There were 20 days of training left when Kimball got back - he spent that time collecting bind wounds treatments. We then went east, across the Sigrfjord, and into the Marching Mountains. There was a blizzard and we had to hunker down. Mucho snow, total accumulation 68". We debated looking for Farfarsil in the mountains but decided against it (we didnt have furs for the humans, we don't know what Farfarsil actually is or exactly where to find it, etc). Crossing south through the hills we encountered a band of Northmen. We wowed them with our awesomeness and they invited us to camp with them but it was only midday, so we pressed on. They gave us some spare furs, torn up and bloody, which the apprentice Kazan mended. Later that night, while we camped, they crept up on us and tried to steal our sleds. Two Sleep spells and a Hold Person later- 5 out of the 25 guys are running off with a sled. Kimball and Basil dispatch them (# of attks per round = level) with ease. Basil, for some reason, is content to take their word that they won't do this again and that it was all a misunderstanding and thinks we should let them go. Kimball on the other hand commands that they be tied together and lashed all the way to the nearest settlement for Yngvar's justice. As Champions of the Clans we need to teach them a lesson. Despite warnings of strange and horrible creatures in the Hain, Basil insists it is shorter to march through the salt marsh than to go around. After several people fell through treacherous ice into 4-8' of salty, frozen water we bee-lined back out of the Hain. We met a "Thane" of the Boar clan and his huntsmen, who didn't believe we were the Champions until I successfully named all 5 major clans. They agreed to take the prisoners off our hands. Mid-journey out of the Hain, our Northmen prisoners began exploding into showers of gore. Perception checks were poor and we couldn't figure out what was going on until several prisoners were dead. Some kind of nasty living snow was attacking and devouring our guys. Every time we hit the creature it divided in two. Then the halves divided when we hit them. Soon we had about 10 of these things. After Morvan's lightning bolt we had about 20. On a successful to-hit each creature did 7d4 damage. Everyone fled after that, the Thane and his boys turned into wereboars or something and we don't what happened to them. All our prisoners died. Kazan and Basil managed to grab their sleds but Cullen and Morvan's were stuck with the living snow. Basil ran back with the Ring of Waterwalking and took like 70 damage from 3 hits. After a ton of healing he ran back again and took 60+ more damage. Both sleds were recovered successfully though. We went south to the edge of another fjord and saw Skalkegaard, but it was unsafe to cross so we headed east, to ford the river where it narrowed in the Silverthorn Forest. Spying an encampment strategically placed on a hill overlooking the forest and the surrounding lands, we approached cautiously. About 25 of those tall thin dudes made out of black full plate armour are pacing around with bardiches and glaive-guisarmes and such. One stood out from the others as bearing sword and shield. And then we saw their leader, a huge bronze figure in hooked and barbed plate armor with a great helm full of fangs. He had a big military fork and was riding a polar bear. We stopped there, just before Kimball blew his horn and the party charged into combat.

Level update: Zinc makes 7. Basil makes 7. Kimball makes 7. Kazan makes 3. Cullen makes 7. So Zinc can train for 4th level spells, Basil can train for 3rd. Does this mean that Kazan is already trained for 2nd? Did you get any more information out of the elves? Like why did the Northmen attack? Have they see any Warhorns? What do they know about the Sea People? Also why did we pay the weregild? That is for the Marten clan to cough up. If anything they owe us weregild for killing four of our men. You have a strange sense of justice. Charge into combat?! Why not just let Morvan fry them with a lightning bolt from long distance? Then as they run towards us we snare them with Entangles. The few that reach us can be dispatched by the fighters.

Does this mean that Kazan is already trained for 2nd? Kazan will still need to train for 2nd level spells. Forgot to include him. Did you get any more information out of the elves? Like why did the Northmen attack? Have they see any Warhorns? What do they know about the Sea People? They were not taking questions. Not friendly these elves. Also why did we pay the weregild? That is for the Marten clan to cough up. If anything they owe us weregild for killing four of our men. You have a strange sense of justice. Could not physically carry it. Literally, even with sled, movement would have been 0. I asked if they would hold onto it for our return and that went over like a lead balloon. It was terrible encumberance to value anyway. When we sack the Marten Clan's stronghold we'll recoup our loss. Charge into combat?! Why not just let Morvan fry them with a lightning bolt from long distance? Then as they run towards us we snare them with Entangles. The few that reach us can be dispatched by the fighters. I was totally kidding. Entangle, we found, does not work in 68" of snow. Maybe if we were in the forest, but they're camped on a hill overlooking the forest. These guys are clearly bad news and we need to take them out.

Kimball did ask, briefly as he was leaving, whether the elves knew about any war horns. The head of the gate guards, who did the talking when you first arrived there, turned a purple color and started to splutter. Kimball said nevermind, forget about it, and trundled away as quickly as possible.

It sounds like the elves had a war horn and the Marten Clan took it. Assuming that is true, then this is likely the War Horn given to Kristin Elf-Friend. Given that we have already found the War Horn given to Gudbrand, then we have found the two known War Horns. So the tales about Farfarsil or Hallakire having a War Horn seem unlikely.
One possible course of action would be to just head for Kerava and let Yngvar know that Hemming has the other War Horn. Another is to head to Skalkegard and try to take it from Hemming. Assuming we can do that we would still have to decide whether to take the War Horn to Yngvar or Hemming to the elves.
Any thoughts as to how to take the War Horn from Hemming without getting killed by the rest of the clan?

24 of their regular guys means 24 suits of empty armor? That's pretty good. Did the captain get teleported by the devil or under its own power? Did we get awoken in the middle of the night so that no one was able to level up?
