Just out of curiosity, are there no magic weapons or armor for sale?
Paavo, with Dan's permission, will show them the incredibly rare Deinonychus figurine and ask what he could get for it. How about the Ring of Fire Resistance?
As a side-note, with the copper crown we should now be able to communicate with Deinonychus.

Just out of curiosity, are there no magic weapons or armor for sale? There's a couple scimitars +1/+2 vs magic using & enchanted creatures floating around but that's about it. Walking around encased in metal armor isn't a thing people do around here. Magical chainmail is probably as rare as magical full/field plate would be in Aldagmor. Bracers & rings of protection are a magical alternative. Most prized are enchanted silks woven into robes/clothes/garments of defense - this would be the equivalent of a cloak of protection and that's like 10000 dinars for a +1. Unfortunately they are rarely ever for sale. Paavo, with Dan's permission, will show them the incredibly rare Deinonychus figurine and ask what he could get for it. How about the Ring of Fire Resistance? Pretty wondrous figurine he's got there. That's the kind of item that's marketable around here. But at best he's looking at a 5400 dinar trade value on that. Paavo would need to sweeten the pot by 2600 dinars if he wanted the ring of fire resistance. As a side-note, with the copper crown we should now be able to communicate with Deinonychus. Cue Jurassic Park lines.

Done.
In mechanical terms how does the talisman work? Is it a permanent PfE effect or is it a 1 shot deal?
Is the 750 gold party funds or for Friedrich alone?

Done. In mechanical terms how does the talisman work? Is it a permanent PfE effect or is it a 1 shot deal? Is the 750 gold party funds or for Friedrich alone? Friedrich trades the morningstar he is carrying for 750 dinars and a talisman against evil (one-time use PfE 10' radius on talisman). If Friedrich wants to give it to the party that's his option.

There are four primary Merchant Houses: Azrad, Thar, Vulroose and Farhad. Fenhold owes 100,000SP to the Merchant House of Thar & Vulroose. Friedrich could always apply his extra cash to the Fenhold debt.

That has got to be pretty interesting to Magicians that make animated constructs. What are the trade-in value of each of those items? I say we rent a vault at one of Merchant Houses and store our surplus magic items - weapons, armor, books. The quantum box is cool but I would hate for us to lose everything if it failed a savings throw. It will also mean we don't need to have someone guarding this stuff constantly.

Where do we stand on the uncut diamonds and the three items whose value is uncertain? We sold the ivy ring, the dragon dish, and the jade circlet on the board last week. The uncut diamonds of Jeru were allocated out to individuals, like most of the other gems, at their uncut value of 25gp each. Bolo made a stab at finding a cutter for them shortly after we arrived in the city, but he didn't have much success. There are a couple jewelers in the Foreign District. ... One will not work uncut stones whatsoever, threatening guild sanctions. The other will work uncut gems, but only for 33% of the final value. Bolo's opinion is that Barb-el-Shay is a bad place to sell gems unless there is no alternative, and in his opinion, our surplus magic items are a good alternative. I would be happy to assign this task to Bolo since I am certain he will maximize his return and as a result the party's return. Bolo appreciates your confidence in him, which he considers well founded and perspicacious.

Right now, I have more interesting things to focus on than selling uncut gems and counting dinars. Bolo is puzzled. It sounds as if Friedrich is suggesting that something is more interesting than gems and gold. Does Friedrich appear healthy? His work in the Fighting Pits must have been very stressful. Perhaps he should take a rest in the shade and a long, cool, relaxing drink.

bloodstone talisman (sustenance) (subject to Bolo's acquiescence) cord of binding (subject to Bolo's acquiescence) bronze bear belt (subject to Nordel's acquiescence) Bolo does not acquiesce. I would be surprised if Nordel acquiesces. Nordel could then choose to keep the +3 studded leather (AC 4) or take one of the +1 ultralight plate (AC 2). I know I suggested Nordel take the splint but I think it would serve one of the front line fighters better. I would also be surprised if Nordel agrees to this. I suspect he feels he has been offered the splint and has accepted it, and a deal is a deal unless someone offers him a better one.

If Trommer wants the splint mail then Paavo and Dan will back him in his right to have it. We have previously explained how senior fighters get first choice in arms and armor. I don't want to have to reopen that discussion.
I haven't made a big deal about the fact that Nordel got all of Danakes's stuff. But really he shouldn't have any of it. If he is going to start assuming he has priority over original members of the party then he will be put in his place.

With Colby's permission, we can add the bag of bones to deal. Or what about the Book of the Aminuculi? What are the trade-in value of each of those items? The Bag of Bones is an odious sack, filled with human bones, that when poured out animates skeletons. Even in cosmopolitan Barb-el-Shay, necromancy has a certain stigma. Maybe another magic-user would be interested in it, but not for the Ring of Fire Resistance. If you're going to shop it around elsewhere let me know. As far as the Book of Animunculi, well, in Barb-el-Shay it's a textbook written in a foreign language. Before it can be valued its contents must be read, which will take Comprehend Languages x10. If it is what the party says it is, and that's hard to believe when it hasn't been examined even once since its acquisition in the Palace of the Silver Princess, then its only worth whatever spells contained are in it. The instructions/formulae for creating gargoyles and lesser golems (rope, straw, bone) are not uncommon. 500 dinars.

Paavo will take Bolo and Colby with him as he visits the Merchant Houses to inquire about secure vaults. ... Can we inspect a vault to see what they are providing? Bolo is keenly interested in this opportunity to inspect the secure vaults of the Merchant Houses. He will definitely accompany Paavo. Paavo will ask around on the Street of Magicians for rings of protection and bracers of defense. He can have either for 2000 dinars. Or both for 4000. If we buy bracers of defense to replace the ones Bolo lost on the ship, Bolo will be happy to give Mary the ring of protection we allocated to him last session. I say we rent a vault at one of Merchant Houses and store our surplus magic items - weapons, armor, books. The quantum box is cool but I would hate for us to lose everything if it failed a savings throw. It will also mean we don't need to have someone guarding this stuff constantly. If we wanted to rent a vault on a temporary basis for the duration of our stay in Barb, to avoid guard duty, Bolo would be okay with that, I guess. But if it's to be a more permanent arrangement, he opposes the idea of shelling out 50gp per month to store a bunch of stuff that we appear not to want. If it's not important enough to have with us, then we should sell it. And if we do want to keep it, we shouldn't pay to store it in a place where we may have no access to it when we need it. How certain is it that once we leave Barb, we'll ever be back? We had never even heard of the place until 30 days ago.

If we buy bracers of defense to replace the ones Bolo lost on the ship, Bolo will be happy to give Mary the ring of protection we allocated to him last session. At this point, the party is not purchasing any magic items. Dan sold his mace for 1500 gp to purchase pearls since he received the rod of flailing from Ingrid. Those pearls went to the party to identify items. Friedrich sold his morning star for 750 gp and a charm. I am not sure what he is going to do with that (though I suggested using it to equip Mary). The party sold the cauldron for some spell ink and cash. The cash was divided among the party members. In order to purchase a magic item, individuals can sell their magic items or use personal funds. We could try going in together on items but I don't know how that would work. We could try dividing the unassigned items among the party members but I don't think that is the way to go. How certain is it that once we leave Barb, we'll ever be back? We had never even heard of the place until 30 days ago. We have a number of valuable weapons and armor that we are not ready to sell. They may be of use in the future, possibly to equip new party members. But they are too encumbering to carry around with us. We have valuable spell books that shouldn't be with us while adventuring. And are also very encumbering. We know there are at least 3 things we want to do in the Sea of Sand - retrieve item from crypt to cover training of Colby, retrieve items from altar of forbidden gods in exchange for the use of Iskander, fulfill some quest for Trommer that he is being coy about. So we will be here awhile. Having a secure vault in the city seems safer than putting everything in the quantum box and hoping it isn't destroyed in the course of adventuring. Once we are ready to leave Barb-el-Shay for good then we can empty the vault out. But for the next couple of months, this should be considered our home base. This is Paavo opinion. If the majority of the party would rather carry those items with us, so be it.

If we genuinely think we will have a use for the stuff, and we're only going to keep the vault for a couple of months while we're based out of Barb, then Bolo will be okay with that. The argument that sways him is that the quantum box should be kept as empty as possible to leave plenty of room for new loot.

We could try dividing the unassigned items among the party members but I don't think that is the way to go. This would, as ever, be Bolo's preference. But he's not going to push it.

Paavo, Bolo and Colby pass under multiple portcullis and guardposts along the way. Bolo asks about the retrieval procedures if a group rents a vault jointly. How many of the partners need to be present to get access to the vault? What if some of the partners die?

I presume there is betting on the results from the Fighting Pits. What are the arrangements? What odds can Bolo get on Friedrich's next fight?
|
|
|
Post by venger on Aug 7, 2012 21:20:10 GMT -5
Betting is regulated in the Fighting Pits, there the oddsmakers come up with the "Money Line" based on a number of unknowable factors. Anything can happen in the Arena though, and the Pitmaster's whim is an uncertain factor...
The Money Line: •Umad (-200 centimes) •Friedrich (+60 centimes)
In this fight, Umad would be the favorite and at -200 it means for every 10 dinars you bet, you will win 1 gold dinar if Umad wins the fight. So if you bet 100 dinars on Umad and he wins, you'd profit 10 dinars.
If Umad were to lose though, you'd lose the full 100 dinars. If you were to bet on Friedrich at +60 you would would win 3 dinar for every 1 dinar bet. So if you bet 100 dinar on Friedrich and he wins the fight, you will profit 200 dinars.
That's right I think.

At one point it was valued at 150 gp. I understand it gets cold at night in the dessert. Paavo places the flask with the rainbird tear back into party possession. Dan places the flanged mace back into party possession. Paavo asks the magician he is dealing with what he could get for a wand of metal detection. Paavo purchase two wooden shields. Paavo takes some of the goblin paste to an alchemist. He describes its effects at warding off scorpions and snakes. Is the alchemist interested in purchasing it? Paavo claims a golden apple. Dan claims a silver apple. Dan claims the 6 lapis lazuli inlaid sticks (augury).
Offers (require other party members to agree): Dan offers to exchange his shield with Trommer. Paavo offers to carry the quantum box given his +4 on saves, protection from evil and 50% magic resistance. Dan offers Mary the gold skull cap (psionic blast).
Suggestions (require other party members to act): Nordel should donate the potion of strength to the party since he cannot use it to increase his strength. Colby should reclaim the robe of deep pockets and his books. Mary should buy some clothes. Mary should purchase a traveling spell book and some spell ink. Everyone but Nordel (who wasn't on the island) should claim a silver or gold apple. As usual healing are party items but we should spread them out in case of emergency. Trommer should exchange his plate mail for the green-lacquered splint-mail. Mary should carry the party healing waters. She can act as medic if someone goes down in combat. Colby should claim the broadsword +1. These items should be carried by party members before we leave town: -a bronze knife (blood-letting) (Friedrich?) -a sealed jar (camo paint) (Mary?) -pale blue potion (flying) (Trommer?) -scroll protection from acid (Colby?) -3 rose colored potions (healing) (divide) Mary needs some magic items. People should cough up things they aren't using.

Trommer is fine with Paavo's suggestions. He will also purchase local attire. Perhaps sporting a turban to cover the heavy iron helm from the sun. Is it possible to get goggles with darken lenses?
Who will have the best used of the Boots of Jumping?
Is the Stormcaller Horn class specific? If not then maybe someone not on the front lines should carry it. That way it could be blown in a battle a bit easier.

Paavo and Dan are interested in selling their healing and curing powers while in the city. They will first check with the Temple to make sure that is allowed. They will offer the Temple 20% of what they earn to help the poor and sick. If acceptable they will ask if there is a place where such services are offered, like a hospital or clinic that the rich members of society use. If no such place exists, they will approach the Pit Master to see if their services are desired by any of the contestants. What are the going rates for cure light wounds, cure serious wounds, cure disease and cure blindness? How about laying on of hands?
Dan will of course continue to provide his Create Waters while in the city.
Dan asks to borrow Bolo's talisman of sustenance to see if it is effective in reducing the amount of sleep needed to regain his spells. Dan will need to wear the talisman for a week before any benefit will be realized. Let me know if Bolo acquiesces.
