@ Bolo: Just some food for thought on the book. As nice as it would be to have now, it’s sweet spot is still about 150,000xp away. At, 225,000 or 11th level. Reading it then will give you and additional 337,500 xp. It will effectively multiply you xp by 2.5 in one fell swoop. In terms of overall relative XP gain, 225,000 is the very best possible point, as I’m sure you can see.
Like I said, before I think you make some valid points and I understand the frustration of needing $$ and not having the party spring to help. I’m just throwing this out there that the 15,000GP may be something to work towards long term and that item will be of much greater use in the future.

Paavo will show the weapon to a couple of weapon smiths, ones that specialize in crossbows and other mechanical devices. Do they know what it is? Any idea how it works? Does it appear to be in working order? Could they fabricate something exactly like it? Any idea what it is worth? Who would they consult to find out more about it? Nobody knows what that is. One calls it an aborted, half-made crossbow. One of them thinks he could saw it down and maybe maybe salvage the butt and some of the stock, but there's no obvious mechanisms for how to fire anything out of it. Piece of junk in their opinion. If the lions are released but they are killed, does the combat continue? If both combatants die, what happens to wagers? Nobody has ever killed the lions because there are also archers. Someone dies first and that's the loser. **I put winner at first... but I meant loser.

Paavo will next try some antiques dealers. Ever seen anything like it before? Any idea where it is from? Do they know any sages that specialize in this sort of thing?

@ Paavo: The problem is that I won’t get a full round of close fighting with him. I can likely charge once and land a hit. At the beginning of the next round I get my specialized attack and that is probably it before he backs up.
So he backs up and throws 5 knives from 10 feet away.
At the start of the next round I close and eat 5 knives because I don’t have my charge. A
At the beginning of next round I get my specialized attack. He backs up 10 feet and throws 5 more knives….
So it seems as if he will get 10 attacks to my 1….
Am I missing something here?

You can get offhand attacks with the charge and, depending on initiatives, when in melee. When he backs up he gets 2 or 3 throws depending on how far he moves. If he is standing in one place then he can get 5 throws. Regardless, he has a distinct advantage in the number of attacks.
Here is how I see it going.
You charge. He sets for charge. Each gets a regular attack and an offhand attack.
You get a specialized attack. He backs up 1" and throws 3 knives. You get an attack of opportunity with the offhand.
You advance 6". He backs up 6" and throws 2 knives from 1".
You advance 6". He backs up 6" and throws 2 knives from 1".
etc.
I don't see a way for you to reach him given his increased movement rate.
If you move away from him then he has follow you but he can still match your movement.
I think to be fair each combatant would have to disclose their direction and rate of movement each segment at the same time. That way you could back up for 8 segments and then move forward the last two and hope to catch him in melee range.
Example: Starting from 1" apart, assume simultaneous initiatives. Friedrich declares he will attempt to close by the end of the round. Umad declares that he will attempt to maintain separation while doing a half move and throwing 2 daggers. Segment 1: F backs up 6', U backs up 6'. 22' apart. Segment 2: F backs up 6', U moves forward 12'. 16' apart. Segment 3: F backs up 6', U moves forward 12'. 10' apart. Segment 4: F backs up 6', U moves forward 6'. 10' apart. Segment 5: F backs up 6', U moves forward 6'. 10' apart. Segment 6: F backs up 6', U throws 2 daggers. 16' apart. Segment 7: F moves forward 6', U done. 10' apart. Segment 8: F moves forward 6', U done. 4' apart. Segment 9: F moves forward 4', U done. 0' apart. Segment 10: F done, U done. 0' apart.
I am not sure this is how the DM will run things. That is why I think some walk through fights would be helpful.

Since your off-hand goes on your part of the round, and he's moving, I'd imagine he'd have to forfeit that, right?

Agreed. The rate of attack with an offhand attack is too slow (1/round) to allow you to move and get an attack with it.

I always wanted to try one of those!

If Friedrich dies I will play a gnome illusionist-thief. I always wanted to try one of those! The level cap is a killer for them. An 18 intelligence gives you a maximum of 7th level illusionist, which doesn't even qualify you for 4th level spells.

If Friedrich dies, Paavo will schlep his body out to Entioch and get him raised. Unfortunately he will lose his Strength increase as well as a point of Constitution. It isn't too late to pull out. I'm sure Bolo could find some place to hide him until the heat blows over.

An 18 intelligence gives you a maximum of 7th level illusionist, which doesn't even qualify you for 4th level spells. I wasn't being serious. If Friedrich dies I have no clue what I would play though. Maybe we could do a couple test runs of this combat per Josh's suggestion. Or we could hope thta Umad has been receiving tactical advice from the efreeti we fought because I'm all out of ideas. FWIW, don't all 7th level fighters get 3/1 with bows? I thought bow specialists get bonus damage but their rate of fire remains the same as an unspecialized one.

Fighters at 7th level get 3/2 with melee weapons. There is no change for ranged weapons.

Paavo will next try some antiques dealers. Ever seen anything like it before? Any idea where it is from? Do they know any sages that specialize in this sort of thing? It looks old. Like an old broken crossbow. Someone at the bazaar will give him 15 dinar for it as a curiosity, if it has a good story behind it. There's a sage in the Foreign District ~ Dwelb Abuyelm, who takes walk-in consultations. Otherwise there are other sages, probably engaged in their research and academic pursuits at any of the educational centers in the city: the Astronomical Observatory, the Grand College of the Most Learned or the Great Library... I think to be fair each combatant would have to disclose their direction and rate of movement each segment at the same time. That way you could back up for 8 segments and then move forward the last two and hope to catch him in melee range. That's awful and complicated. I'll write down Umad's specific action for the round and show another player before I ask Friedrich's declaration of action. Then we'll roll initiative. When splitting fire Umad cannot "follow" Friedrich's moves. He can pick a direction that he's planning to move (backward, forward, to the left, etc) for 5 segments or a specific square within 30'/60'/90', and then he can take his remaining shot(s) 5 segments after that if his opponent is in range. Likewise, Friedrich can declare he is trying to close to melee, that he is trying to maintain melee contact, that he is attacking, that he is moving to a specific square, etc. There isn't going to be segment by segment determination of individual moves like a real-time chess game. It'll be our standard combat protocol, declare actions, roll intiative, see what happens over the course of the round. Should be fun! Or we could hope thta Umad has been receiving tactical advice from the efreeti we fought because I'm all out of ideas. That efreeti had a genius level intelligence. GENIUS! FWIW, don't all 7th level fighters get 3/1 with bows? I thought bow specialists get bonus damage but their rate of fire remains the same as an unspecialized one. Fighter advanced attack progression only applies to melee weapons. Bows are never more than 2/1. If Friedrich dies I will play a gnome illusionist-thief. YES YOU WILL. Umad cruises forward. Friedrich barrel rolls left.

On the night before Friedrich's fight, Bolo will ask Gabul to hire some beggars and/or street urchins to create half-hourly disturbances outside Shahrzad's Sensuous Shack. Some more ideas for disturbances: random screaming, banging pots and pans or garbage can lids, loud singing, throwing a mouse or rat through the window (if it's open).

Dispel Magic, at level, 5' radius: The sword needs to be triggered like any other magic item on segment 5. "otherwise it's too powerful and potentially dangerous- dispelling magic bridges the party is on, dispelling all potions it passes by, etc." Can this be used repeatedly to dispel some effect if initially it fails? So assuming we are in no hurry, Paavo can keep trying once a round until something is negated. With Paavo at 7th level, only magic at 32nd level would be safe. Against magic at 31st level, Paavo has a 2% chance of dispelling it each round. So a couple of hours should more than suffice.
