Yeah, we should definitely press on. We're down two guys, but everyone leveled up once or twice. We can also reshuffle the equipment a bit, and put Kimball in Cullen's armor and Gregor's shield.

Kimball is undersized for the leather armor. Maybe Morvan should pick Enlarge for his new slot.
Cullen is the only guy who can pick locks and find traps with any reliability. And the additional ranged attack support of Cullen and Gregors will be missed. Do you think Cullen will let Kazan borrow his bow?
We need to get better armor for Morvan as well. He fights as well as Zinc.

Then Kimball should probably get the bracers and Basil should get the leather. There is a suit of chain that Morvan can wear. Keep in mind that Zinc has 38 HP, and Morvan has less than half that. Morvan also can't use any of our magic weapons. He should use his heavy crossbow more often.

I am not suggesting Morvan is a front line fighter but he can't sit in the back the whole time when there is only 5 of us. Also he has more hit points normally than Kazan had for all of last week. Isn't there a magic footman's mace Morvan can use? And we should see if he or Kimball can wear the female chain.
Kimball getting the bracers is a good idea. Basil's DEX just went to 18 so he can afford to have the lesser armor.

I believe that the chain is definitely female-only, and we were told that elven males are still too big. Bralm is ridiculously restrictive in weapon-proficiencies, and I don't think that Morvan can use any of the new weapons we have. Zinc is taking the battle-axe back from Gregers, BTW.

|
Post by venger on Jan 22, 2009 14:46:34 GMT -5
For Priests of Bralm it lists weapons as: Standard (staff 1st), plus crossbow, dart, man catcher;
This means he can use any weapon a cleric can use (blunt weapons) in addition to crossbow, dart and man-catcher.
No reason he can't use the mace other than lack of proficiency.
So Basil takes the leather from Cullen, Kimball takes the bracers from Basil, Morvan takes the shield from Greggers.

I think we should have plenty of Protection from Evil when we go back. The last thing we can afford is for one of the party to be charmed. I would suggest casting them before we head down the stairs. We know there are still at least 9 ghouls running around and this will slow them down. Maybe we hold on Kimball and Morvan since they are 90% immune to charm and resistant to ghoul paralysis. How long does it last? 5 rounds/level? It will also keep anything from the lower planes at bay so we can concentrate our fire power on individual opponents.

|
|
Post by venger on Jan 23, 2009 9:42:35 GMT -5
Protection from Evil is only 3 rounds per level. 4 segment casting time.
If Kazan wants to use a missile weapon Kimball has an extra longbow. And he can grab Greggers extra spears and try throwing them as a specialist.
Cullen has that white-hide cloak which Morvan could wear. And a magic shortsword that Kimball could use in his off hand if Morvan takes the shield.

Zinc can cast PfE for 18 rounds now, which will last for a bit of exploring and the beginning of a fight. Morvan's last for 12 rounds, and are a little less practical. Kazan is definitely the best recipient, since his saves are bad.

So if someone is unconscious and at death's door... do you think he really need full rations? If not, that helps us out a bit.
Gotta look on the bright side.

Did you manage to take down the bearded devil? Anything else happen after we chased it down the stairs?

If you recall, we fought the barbed devil in the small room at the bottom of the stairs with 2 doors. When we beat up on the barbed devil, he teleported away. We then opened the one door, which was a bedroom. The other door was a narrow corridor, with a bearded devil right at the door. We beat on him, Kazan was feared, Morvan and Kimball tackled him and removed his fear. He then teleported away. We went through the corridor and after 15 feet it opened into a 20x10 trophy room, with the skulls of all of the Jarls from each tomb. The barbed devil and bearded devil were at either side of the corridor. We filled the room and a melee began. Kazan was immediately charmed, as all of our protections had run out. He knocked out Zinc in the next round, as Basil backstabbed and slew the bearded devil. Then the barbed devil attacked Kimball. Basil tried to backstab it and rolled two 1s, but didn't fumble. Morvan charged and successfully hit it with his mace. Next round, Kazan missed Basil on his 2 attack round. Basil hit it once again with the dagger and it went down. Morvan was out of spells, so Zinc was bound. He used his 3 remaining spells to heal everyone up to double-digit HP.

Cool. I didn't realize it was a different devil in the small room. Impressive taking out two devils. Morvan wading into melee - I like it.
Only one charmed party member. Not bad. I hope this doesn't mean Kazan is going to be the new Raven.
So did we leave off in the trophy room? Should we head back and check on Gregers and Cullen? Rest here for 4-8 hours? Keep exploring?
With 8 hours of sleep Kazan should make 4th level assuming we got ~2000 xp. Which means double specialization and 3 points off his THAC0.

The record should show that Zinc made 8 saving throws and didn't fail any against the demons. (failed saves vs. ghouls don't count).
If we got 2100+ XP Kazan and Morvan will level up. 5th level cleric for Morvan isn't especially helpful, but 4th level Fighter is a big one.
We ended immediately after the fight, so no one has done anything. We are entirely out of non-Web spells, so I think resting is in order. I'll be gone next week, so that's my vote, to rest down here in the devil's bedroom.

Post by venger on Jan 26, 2009 14:53:29 GMT -5
I second the vote for sleeping down here. Stick a "Do Not Disturb" sign on the devil's bedroom and camp for 8 hours. Zinc and Morvan sleep and get spells back, Kazan gets 4th level.
I would hate to be killed in our weakened state by a random ghoul encounter on the way out of the dungeon, especially after having successfully vanquished the big bad evil guy.

Morvan makes 5th level cleric. Kazan makes 4th level fighter. Character | XP | Class | Level | Morvan | 13311/13311 | Cleric/Magic-user | 5/4 | Zinc | 34302 | Cleric | 6 | Basil | 15651 | Fighter*/Thief | 5*/5 | Kazan | 8193 | Monk*/Fighter | 5*/4 | Kimball | 27132 | Ranger | 5 |

Since our assumption was correct that Kazan leveled up, I think we should spend 8 hours in the devil's bedroom. Kazan will sleep 8 hours, Morvan and Zinc will sleep 4 hours and memorize 4 hours, and Basil and Kimball will guard.
Is that a plan?

Sounds good. Before we start recuperating I think we should check the rooms and bodies for anything interesting.
What are the chances we will get some spell ink in the valley? I know it is unlikely but it would be great if Morvan could add his new spells to his traveling spell book. Any chance he is taking Knock? Cullen isn't here and Basil "I don't pick locks" Athelstar isn't going to be much use breaking into anything. I assume there has got to be more treasure around here than we have found. Knock would also be useful for the trapped secret door we found.

There is a female elf illusionist still running around, unless she was one of the devils in a disguise. Maybe she'll have a spell book and ink.

Now that the big bad evil is dead, I am starting to think about longer term plans. Probably premature but nothing else to discuss about the Valley at the moment.
So I am thinking with winter coming on here in the Land of Song we may not be able to get a boat headed south for a while. It might make sense to take several months to do a lot of training. We probably won't have access to people who can train us in everything so there will be lots of self training which will extend the time. I am hoping we can bargain with the Jarl of Jarls to provide us with training, material and housing as a reward for our defeating the evil in the Valley.
By the time we finish with the Valley Basil will be 6th level and could possibly switch to bard. He could use the time to get his apprenticeship completed with Viggo. Other training -Kazan: bind wounds, weapons -Zinc: 3rd level cleric spells, weapons -Morvan: 3rd level cleric spells, weapons, bind wounds, possibly 3rd level magic user spells -Kimball: weapons -Basil: weapons -Cullen: weapons, bind wounds
Also we need to identify the magic items unless Viggo volunteers to do it for us. That is going to take bunch of pearls and more of Morvan's time.
In the spring we can sail south or go looking for the multi-headed dragon Gregers told us about.

The plan changed... Unwilling to leave Cullen and Gregers unconscious in the cave, we searched the devil's bedroom and found some nice stuff in his wardrobe. We also found a ring with 19 keys on it. We took the nice stuff and headed back to the cave before it got dark. While resting at the cave a party of 12 northmen arrived. Kazan has able to make friends. We left Cullen and Gregers with them the next day when we headed back. Long story short, there wasn't much left in the way of undead left. We killed several of the polymorphing undead and some zombies. The rest of the time was spent searching and opening secret doors, taking gems from the throne, destroying the guardian statues, freeing a dwarf and elf princess who were prisoner. There was a cockatrice that was guarding the big treasure room. We were able to kill it before it hit anyone. There were lots of trapped chests. Basil is slow poisoned currently. Zinc was able to disarm one of two glyphs. We used dispel magic on another. We still haven't done the ghoul caves or the far side of the valley. It is getting colder. We need to decide whether to stay longer and how we are getting everything back to the city. Also how we are going to convince Ingvar to let us keep most of it.
