So is there serious consideration of staying longer or leaving to to rest?

DM Question: What time is it? How many hours are there until nightfall?
I would rather not be down here when the sun goes down. If we rest to regain spells, Zinc will need 7 hours and 15 minutes. Morvan needs about 8. It'll probably be night time by that point. Traveling through the valley at night is likely very dangerous.

We could try resting in Teodor's tomb. It looked like it was undisturbed.

If we're going to go rest let's hike the extra 2 hours back to the cave (which seems to be safe) and check on Gregers, rather than sleep in a TOMB, in the EVIL VALLEY OF EVIL UNDEAD JARLS.
Hopefully that evil regenerating guy will be back when we return, he'd make perfect ghoul-bait. Otherwise we just tie a rope around a handy corpse and stick it in the secret door. When the ghouls are biting, we pull the corpse out and make short work of them. Rinse. Repeat.
If we're worried about the dispel magic effect on our remaining potions, maybe we can put them in a sack on the end of a spear and run them along the ceiling past the dispel magic statues...

The case for not going back to our safe cave is that the monsters will come back to this place we haven't finished exploring and we'll be back to the drawing board.
Do you think we could hide in the duergar's room long enough to evade detection? It hopefully won't reek of brimstone like the rest of this area if the door is shut.

According to Basil, most of the valley was lit when he through the annoyingly not-dead guy off the watch tower. The sun goes down (for real) around five or six-ish, but the valley is shadowed well before that.

Where's the fun it that?
How about just hammering the statues into scrap metal. Were I a barbarian I bet they would count for some experience. Or at least the heads since they did the tracking of those that passed thru. Zinc has some extra hammers. If they are attached to the floor we could break the stone floor them drag them outside.

As wonderful as that little detail was, I was compelled to remove the part about the "unwashed, sweaty elf." It's rather unheroic.
Adventurers don't smell (unless they're attacked by giant skunks). Same way they never go to the bathroom.

So, ideas for where to rest? I'm leaning towards pressing on into the main bad guy room using the CSW Scroll to heal up Zinc. Hopefully Morvan's 3 webs can tip the scales in our favor by immobilizing the bulk of the BBEG's guards.

I'm not for that. I would prefer to have Gregers back with us as a safety measure. The recent experience of unsuccessfully pushing through has me more risk adverse. If nothing else having Kazan get his next level first would be ideal. Leveling up for Basil doesn't change anything except maybe his AC.
Retreating to the cave at least lets us know if Gregers has survived being left alone. Zinc needs to have his armor mended a couple of times as well.

Well, Gregers is certainly not coming back with us any time soon, since he's out for 4 more days (assuming he isn't dead). If we retreat with the duergar's stuff, maybe some of it will be magical. We should also dismember the dead dwarf, so he doesn't get animated. I'm reluctant to leave, since we didn't really accomplish much during the last foray, and if we leave, everything will repopulate.

I vote we take the time here, during the remaining daylight hours, to rest and memorize once, heal up, then press forward with whatever spells we have left.
If we go back to the cave for an extended period of time the bad guys will replenish their undead forces and be on full alert.
Waiting 4 days for Gregers is no good.

Great session before the cookie party! Good end for the year.
The party went and rested at the top of the watch tower. Zinc and Morvan regained all of their spells and Basil and Kazan got eight hours of sleep to level up. (Dana made an exception since Kazan had more than enough xp's.)
Kazan didn't get enough points to switch to magic user so chose to become a 0-level fighter instead. With the dwarf shield, his dexterity and the ring his AC was the same. His THAC0 only went up 2 because he now gets his +1 to hit for strength. Only his saving throws went up drastically.
We healed up some and mended before heading back down - most people were in the high teens to low twenties.
Back downstairs the skulls had been replaced and the spike had been removed from the door. We went around to the two doors in the main passage way behind the jackal mouth. The first appeared to lead into the ghoul catacombs so we skipped it. The second also appeared to lead into the catacombs, so we took it.
In the first cave we were attacked by an acid spitting ghoul. Zinc took the brunt of the attack but his armor saved him from getting clawed. The acid prevented him from turning it but we made quick work of it once it was surrounded by the others.
As we checked its body, three shambling zombies and a scampering leprous creature came out another passage. Morvan was able to web two of the zombies and the leprous creature just as two of the zombies closed and started strangling him. Zinc was able to turn them so they released Morvan. (Zinc used turning to great effect for most of the session.) We took down the one free zombie only to discover that it was one of those that bounce back and cause fear.
Cullen and Basil fled but luckily Kimball had already retreated down the corridor and was able to block their passage. Kazan (0-level fighter) made his saving throw and then struck down the zombie, releasing the fear on Cullen and Basil.
Basil then poured oil onto the web and Kazan lit it on fire. We were able to destroy another of the zombies before anyone fled too far. The other one was turned leaving the leprous creature.
Kazan and Basil blocked its passage to Zinc while Kimball and Cullen tried to hit it with arrows. It struck Basil and drained a level from him (a wight!), dropping him back to 1st level (easy way to get more attribute points). Then it struck Kazan. A discussion ensued as to whether to forgo xps this week and make the save as a 5th level monk, or hope to save as a 0-level fighter and gain xps this week. The difference was 20%. The possible loss was 12,500 xps. I chose the gamble and rolled a 17. Still a 0-level fighter and proceeded to skewer it on the spear.
We backtracked to spike the doors to keep the last zombie from coming after us. By the time we got back it was pounding on the door to free the spike. We opened the door, Zinc turned it, people shot and stabbed it. It went down, came back up and feared Cullen and Basil. Zinc grabbed Cullen, Morvan grabbed Basil and Kimball and Kazan destroyed it.
We hadn't taken too much damage this whole time so we kept going down the main corridor. We came into a big room where we were attacked by five undead. All clearly champions at one point - one guy in a white cloak, giant shield and battle axe; a woman with a broken staff and cloak that made her hard to see; a woman in chain with a bow and a longsword with runes; a guy in plate mail with a silver shield and a footman's flail; and a guy with a short sword that didn't reflect light. (We think they were juju zombies - unaffected by magic missiles or silver arrows as we learned, and hard to turn.)
An epic battle commenced with lots of coordinated movement and spell casting. Kazan went unconscious twice. Zinc and Kimball once each. Basil was down to a single hit point at one point. Cullen was pick-pocketing holy waters and tossing at the undead. Morvan could never get a web off given the tight confines and the short range. Slowly we wore them down as we used up all of our cleric spells on healing and protection. We ended up using the royal jellies on Kazan and Zinc, restoring lots of hit points as well as their strength and constitution.
The guy in plate was the last to go down as Basil was able to work around behind it and back stab it with Teodor's dagger. We grabbed their stuff, rashly putting on some of the items, and headed back to the watch tower. It was great to see everyone standing toe to toe with the enemy and giving whatever support they could.

So where did we end up xp-wise after the last session? Basil should have leveled up to 2nd level again.
I guess we will need to rest at least 8 hours to get all of the spells back.
When Kazan makes 1st level fighter does he get to roll for exceptional strength? Or does he start at 18 flat and have to apply his future stat rolls to increase it above this?

Basil regains 2nd level thief. I split Kazan's XP 50/50 between his monk class and his apprenticeship, giving him 5th level monk and most of the way to 1st level fighter. Character | XP | Morvin | 9832/9832 | Zinc | 24569 | Basil | 4985 | Kazan | 24185/1700 | Kimball | 16466 |

Is there a plan for Sunday? It sounds like we'll sleep in the watchtower to get spells and head back down again. I guess a detect magic is the first order of business, to make sure all of the special looking items we took are magical.

My vote is resting until fully healed and spelled up. The last fight was pretty tough i would expect it to get tougher as we go on. I agree on the detect magic.

An eventful week. Morvan makes 4th level magic-user. Zinc makes 6th level cleric. Basil makes 4th level thief. Kazan makes 2nd level fighter. Kimball makes 5th ranger. Character | XP | Class | Level | Morvin | 10450/10450 | Cleric/Magic-user | 4/4 | Zinc | 28840 | Cleric | 6 | Basil | 9931 | Fighter*/Thief | 5*/4 | Kazan | 2473 | Monk*/Fighter | 5*/2 | Kimball | 21412 | Ranger | 5 |
and Majstang roughly translates to Maypole! *fixed math error in Kazan XP*

This seems like the perfect time to press on, since if we get level drained, you won't be formally the next level yet.

So how are we going to proceed?
We have less than 3 days of food. Gregers and Cullen are out for 5+ days. We need two days for everyone to level up, rest, memorize and heal. Do we venture out and forage while Gregers and Cullen heal up? Do we try to make one more run at the place while we have food, leaving them behind?
I think if we wanted to we could head back to the abandon village and look for stores. There should be some root cellars in the village that are untouched. Also we could try hunting in the woods off the mountain.
