The Company responded to the the aid of some bird-men that were having trouble with some gryphons. Instead of toasting the gryphons (which Winthrop was tempted to do) a deal was negotiated so that the Company would slay the great blue lizard and the gryphons would take that territory and leave the bird-men alone. The deal struck the party set off towards left of east to find the dragon. Fortunately the God-bird didn't show up.
We were able to find the mountain where the dragon lived and started the climb up it. That night our rest was disrupted with a call from the dark "Fools thought you could sneak up my mountain without me unaware." That isn't the exact wording but I was sleeping at the time but it is close enough. Then a tree was dropped on the party. Fortunatley it missed us. We did a lot of running around trying to avoid falling objects. Winthrop fireballed the dragon. Oaklock bravely fly up and mangic missile the dragon and then got munched on. Heeding Otto's suggested Winthrop then dimensioned door up as far as he could go and cast wall of ice on the dragon and Oaklock. Oaklock survived that and the dragon dropped him and fled.
The party travelled the next couple of days to the cave mouth. A rock slide had cover the entraced with the exception of a small passage. The decision was made to to dimension door in as far as we could go and attack. I would have worked expect the dragon was quicker and we wer hit with a lightning bolt. Winthrop and Otto went down but Raven saved and was able to get two arrows into it thus killing it.

And the magic haul will turn out to be a net loss. The scalpel of sharpness was melted and Winthrop lost several spell books and some magic items. A quick check revealed only 2 or 3 magic items in the dragon horde.
Dana suggested that next time we think about leaving behind the non-essential items with the non-combatants. Not that we hunt many dragons but it is a good strategy to keep in mind.

Shall I send Bran back as a messenger to either the bird people or the griffins? It will take at least 4 days for him to return which will give us plenty of time to explorer the dragon cave, collect the treasure and identify the magic items. We also have 4 potions from the wolfweres that need to be identified.

I wouldn't send him to the griffins, as they'll likely eat him. We should probably wait to see how much stuff we can carry out of here and how much of the cave there is to explore. It looks like the cave is pretty small, and that we can probably fit much of the loot in the Leomund's chest.

He is pretty plucky and he moves 6" faster than the griffins. He could probably caw at them from some distance. Of course birds are talking all of the time so we could have Jasper talk to anything that comes by and I bet all of the flying creatures in the area would soon know the dragon is dead.

It might be better to tell the birdmen. They might be a little confused that we agreed to kill the griffins and instead went off to slay the dragon.

I will have Bran find Harvey and tell him - "men kill blue lizard. griffins stop eating bird men."
Do you think we could combine Sending with Tongues? Tongues is supposed to work with anyone in hearing range and by the result of Sending someone at arbitrary distance can hear a message from the spell caster. Would the DM care to weigh in on this?

Tongues has a defined area of effect, a 60' radius, so it would not work with Sending as you've described.

Treasure Update
The cavern of the dragon is long and narrow, with a large vent up and out of the mountain, hundreds of feet above. The lower reaches of the cavern are damp and water pools in them. The dragon's horde seems meager to you, but is what it is. Raven assesses the gems while Adrienne and Oaklock locate the magical items.

I hope the scroll offsets some of the loses Winthrop had. Hold Monster alone should be a great addition to the repetoire.
Can I have the silver dagger to replace the scalpel?
While we are resting we will show Winthrop and Raven the papers we got from Kenneth. Do they glean anything extra from them?

Indeed, the list of names and odd words on the front page of the papers seems to be in a substitution code. The list contains the names of a number of towns in Sterich and the northern part of the Yeomanry and what appears to be either place names or first person names that correspond to them.

Presumably none of the names are familiar? None of the usual suspects-SK, San, Dred, etc.?

I'm excited about the Teleport without Error. It could be a nice get out of jail free card if we get in a real pinch.

The place names are familiar, including Istivin and Longspear, but only one of the names looks familiar. It is the merchant who was rescued from Nosnra's Steading with Oaklock.

This week was mostly admistrative detail. We packed up the dragon horde and travelled back to the the gryphons place to complete the agreement. They had already moved so we went to the bird people. Then on the way to the gnomes came across a cuple of stone giants that flying Otto took care of and a little way on we met a company od dwarves from the Blackrock clan. We stayed with them a couple of days and traded one of the chalices for gems. Then we went back to the gnomes where we found Dell. He was unable to follow all the perfectly good Sending messages to get any further than the gnomes. We spent about two weeks at the gnomes. Otto got trained in the magical arts and we amde a spell book for him. Winthrop had a blue dragon skin backback made to replace the toasted one. Oaklock and Dell made some scolls. Raven was still really ill from eating the blue dragon steaks. They seem to be somewhat poisonous. After some serious discussion as to what to do next the majority vote carried with Raven's fervent arguement to go after the Frost Giants rather than the undead in Sterich. So the Company started off by taking a party of the gnomes back to the glowing pool (we traded one of the chalices to them for what turned out to be a gnome convict locksmith which we gave Otto the responsibility of reforming his errant ways). Then we travelled on and discovered a cave with some orcs standing guard outside which is where we stopped.

Other things of note...
While waiting for Winthrop and Oaklock to dissect the blue dragon for parts and Otto's armor to heal we saw some activity on the edge of the glacier - giants and the other humanoids bringing supplies. That is nominally where we are headed now.
We found the remains of some adventurers in the gryphons' nest including a gold belt and a +1 scimitar which we were able to trade to the gnomes for a +1 shield which Oaklock is now using. He also is using the +1 chainmail from Kenneth.
The bird people were exceedingly happy to be free of the gryphons. They gave us some gems of relatively low value as well as one magic gem which will bring the aid of the goddess of the air, whatever that means. Winthrop is carrying it - though maybe Raven should be since he actually killed the dragon.
The giants Otto killed were hill giants. They were on their way to join Groorg. They had no treasure. There were some stone giants that a giant snake told us about but we didn't try to hunt them down.
The dwarves were great hosts. They gave us a stone seal that we can use as way of introduction to any other dwarves we meet in the area. We also purchased from them mountaineering gear for everyone in the party.
The gnomes were more impressed with the Company after hearing all of the exploits. The magic users also spent time writing more scrolls. I hear Dell even has some combat spells just in case. A band of them came with us back to the ogres' cave to investigate the magic pool. Their leader was an illusionist that cast a spell to hide the cave. The gnomes were not certain how the gems are affixed to the chalices so weren't sure how we could replace them on the chalices so they could be reused. (DM - I would like to try to use Mend to places the gems back on the chalice. Any luck?)
The gnome thief is in our service for 6 months. An illusionist would have been cool but a thief should prove useful as well. (DM - do you have his stats?) His name is Fifwen (sp?).
We identified and divided the magic items from the last month. Otto has a potion of flying and the javelin of lightning (make sure not to be in the backstrike). He and Raven have the best chance to hit with it since Otto is now 9th level and Raven already has a good distance weapon. But if Raven wants it, fine by me. Winthrop has the gem from the bird people (we should identify it). Adrienne is still carrying the sack with the chalices. I am not sure who got the other potions from the wolfweres. One purifies liquids including poison. I don't remember what the other two do. Cedrus should take the scroll of forebearance. Who wants to carry the circlet? Otto had it last.

Dell gets the circlet. As far as I can tell, he's the party's repository for evil items already. (Winthrop is the repository for cursed items.) It's partly because Dell is neutral, and partly because if Dell turns on the party all of a sudden he'll be a lot easier to stop than anyone else.

On second thought, maybe I will just hang on to it for now. Just a while ago you were saying that the non-essential items should be kept with the non-combatants, which is yet another reason to give it to Dell. Besides, if the leader (whoever that is) says "don't wear the circlet" then he doesn't wear the circlet. Things go better when everyone follows the rules. P.S. Right now, Pavel is pretending to be us and cleaning out our bank accounts.

By non-combatant I meant one of the clerics or the low level hirelings. Not someone who can memorize lightning bolt or fireball and backstab for quadruple damage. But it was the second reason you gave that made me reconsider. The idea of Dell commanding a powerful undead against the party after stunning everyone with the amulet doesn't fill me with confidence.

Powerful undead.I was going to say that he doesn't seem all that tough, but then I remembered that the circlet we have is Mithril, not gold, so it's probably tougher than average... and then I saw his magic resistance, and got scared all over again. I do feel the need to point out:

P.S. Right now, Pavel is pretending to be us and cleaning out our bank accounts. I think the only bank account we have left is Dell's account for the Inn, so you mean that he's cleaning out your bank accounts.

I'd suggest that the javelin goes to Jasper, since a javelin is one of the few weapons he can use. He also has a very high dex so is pretty good with thrown weapons.

What is his THAC0 with dex bonus and non-proficiency minus? Besides Otto always has sword and shield out so he is a little slow to switch to something else.

His THAC0 is 18 and his dex bonus is +2. He's decently close to a new level, which would make his THAC0 16 and bump his DEX bonus to +3.

And Jasper isn't currently proficient with javelin, is he? That is a -3 adjustment for monks. So he has an adjusted THAC0 right now of 19 compared to Otto who has an adjusted THAC0 of 14. How about if Otto holds onto it until Jasper goes up a level? If it is needed immediately then it will be in the hands of the person who has the best chance of hitting with it. Once Jasper goes up a level and is proficient with javelin he can have it. Seem fair?

Sure, that's fine. Did we only get one? The DMG suggests that they come as a set, since they're used up on one throw.

Then we travelled on and discovered a cave with some orcs standing guard outside which is where we stopped. Just before this we saw some hippogriffs. Which got me wondering whether Friendship with Animals applies to griffins and hippogriffs. The description says it does not apply to magic animals (displacer beasts, winter wolves, etc.) but does not mention merely fantastical animals. It would be pretty cool if Cedrus (or Otto) could get a flying mount this way. Does the DM care to rule?
