Otto was carrying and has left with Pfiffwin will go with the rest of the company to Hochhoch. He wants to buy some illusionist spells and components. Otto wants 5,000 gp of his share of company funds and recent treasure made available to Pfiffwin for purchases. Make sure he gets receipts for all purchases. Otto was only taking the scimitar because no one likely else wanted it. He would prefer the stone horse. Note that the stone horse does not exactly match the description in Unearthed. There it is a full sized stone horse that can move. Here it sounds like the stone figurine becomes a full sized flesh horse. We should test it out. Also I think it would be better used by someone who can actually fight on horseback.

Otto was only taking the scimitar because no one likely else wanted it. He would prefer the stone horse. Otto on horseback moves at the same speed, but wouldn't get the AC bonus from his boots. Since we rarely have horses with us, Otto being the only one riding a horse makes him both more likely to be targeted and easier to hit. That's a lose/lose. I think I see your reasoning, though. "Rangers may own only those goods and treasure which they can carry on their person and/or place upon their mount," plus "A stone horse can carry 1,000 pounds tirelessly," equals "cha-ching!" With the stone horse, Otto can finally own furniture!

Doesn't he already have a horse? With a name?

You only have the cash you are carrying. Everything else is with Winthrop at the hall.

The advantage of fighting on horseback (if you are trained) is that you get the horse's full movement and then still get your full attack sequence. Clearly there are situations where it is not advantageous to be on horseback but there are also situations where it would be useful. The advantage of having a horse figurine is that you don't have to worry about the horse when you are hiking through mountains or going underground. I am not sure when Hugh would use it except for when everyone else in the company also is mounted.
Otto's horse is Cyfaill. We left him with the elves before heading to the Great Oak. I don't know if they brought our horses when they met us there. The stone horse probably has limitations on how often it can be used - most figurines do. Otto can take figurine when he goes to get Herbert and experiment with its uses. Then we can decide who could use it better.

Wintrhop's things to do in Longspear: 1. Get Grizela raised. 2. Tithe to Ehlonna. 3. Tithe to Trithereon (i.e. help buy a bell). 4. Put extra magical armor in chest. 5. Try to get some holy water. 6. Try to get some Pearls 7. Try to buy spell books? Spells? 8. Get current news
Are there any other things that should be done?

We've already tithed more than enough money to Ehlonna. I think Ehlonna should start tithing back to us.
You could commission a Leomund's chest to be made if we can't do it where we are. You could get some spells for Pfiffwin in addition to magic user spells. You could get some potions made with all the components we have. You could inform someone about the nefarious activities of the Scotti family.

Where did we commision my chest from? Does Dell have any preference on the type of wood? Inlays or logos?
If the Silent One is back in business then I can try to get spells. It's not likely.
It takes too much time making potions. I'd be better off wrting scrolls at this point. We need to hire an Alchemist to make them for us.

Are we waiting at Castle Crag until Winthrop gets back, or not? If we don't wait, someone needs to stay behind and wait for him.

I think the idea is that we can use clairvoyance and clairaudience to communicate while we travel. I think he's going to hang out in Longspear until we return.

Okay, that's good. So we'll do our shopping in Hochoch, and meet back here at Castle Crag. Then we'll go back to the tower and get beaten by the Berghiem mercenaries again.
For Winthrop's shopping list: Dell of course wants a chest constructed. For the magic users in the party, I think we need... say four regular and seven travelling spellbooks. And pearls. And of course we need a ton of spell-writing ink. Of course we'll be looking for stuff in Hochoch as well.
Also, if you can bring Dell back a Lawful Evil half-orc fighter/assassin henchman, that'd be great.

Shouldn't we wait for Otto? Or start looking for the Great Druid again? Or if we're just feeling restless there's a band of crappier Red Goblin mercenaries or something.

Shouldn't we wait for Otto? The fewer people on the mission, the larger your cut of the treasure is. (The original aphorism refers to the number of people that survive the mission, but we're not so uncivilized as to kill anyone just for money.) Or start looking for the Great Druid again? That's what we're doing. The mercenaries just happen to be in between us and the mountains where the Druid is probably hiding. And after we get to the mountains, we're probably going to kill some giants. Because our fans demand giant-killing. Or if we're just feeling restless there's a band of crappier Red Goblin mercenaries or something. The Bergheim mercs have mages. Mages that are also mercenaries... wear bracers. You want bracers? Take them from another mage's unconscious body, like I... would have. If I hadn't gotten these as a gift. A gift from another mage's unconscious body.

What do we think that flying creature scouting the castle was? Perhaps the Bergheim mercenaries are planning to upgrade from the tower to the castle? We can probably just plan on fighting whoever occupies the castle while we're gone.

I know how we hate to make plans - let alone follow through with them - but another suggestion for attacking the Bergheim mercenaries occurs to me. With the use of the new wand we have we could have a coordinated attack where the magic users fly invisibly to the tower, one of them uses the wand to cast passwall on the side of the tower and the others move in and drop whatever spells you like. We could even do some reconnaissance beforehand using clairvoyance to figure out which floors their magic users use for sleeping. Once they are out the way the rest of the Company can move in to take care of the ground troops.

They're good at seeing invisible.
How long will it take to get all the freed captives to Hochoch?
