Gabul can learn any proficiency in the party.
He can only specialize in longsword, scimitar, longbow, heavy crossbow, axe.
Bolo can't teach him specialized dagger because Bolo is not specialized.

Got it. I was just trying to make sure I wasn't missing anything. Are there any other weapons proficiencies in the party (not specialized) in addition to what I listed?

Mace, flail. I think Trommer has spear. Colby had broadsword.

I was going by this. The party had a dozen camels, Khaddil has a camel and Haddiq, Azhbad and Basmadoos each had camels. Total 16 camels. 1 camel was slain by ghouls. 2 camels were slain by demons. An unknown # of other camels were affected by demon-fear - but that wore off when the demon was slain so they aren't far away. My fault. I just read "The party has 12 camels" and stopped there.

Friedrich is proficient in dagger, I think, so he can teach Gabul that.

The firepower in the proposed riding formation seems to me to be weighted too heavily toward the front. That's good if we bump into something that isn't expecting us. But if we're ambushed, or if we encounter demons that can teleport to any location they want, then the back of the column is really vulnerable. The pack camel shouldn't be at the very back. Instead, one of the heavy hitters should be there as a rearguard. Also, what about PfE? Doesn't one of the new people provide this? If so, are he and Paavo at opposite ends of the formation so everyone is covered? I agree that traveling as three squads, widely separated, sounds sort of cool. But in practical terms I think it runs too many risks -- separated by an unexpected sandstorm, one squad surrounded before the others can connect up with them, etc. Bolo suggests that the second-lightest party member, after himself, is probably Mary Tanner. So perhaps Bolo should share a camel with Mary, rather than Gabul. But Bolo won't enter into a lengthy discussion on this point, if his suggestion is rejected, as the whole subject of camels is too painful for him. He is still mourning the loss of his dear Humphrey ("Humpy":). Unless Venger states that MT would not like to share a camel with Bolo, I have no problem with it. In the past, though, Mary(Venger) has balked at some seemingly trivial things that Friedrich has asked of her and this is not something that Friedrich will push if she insists on riding her own camel/ By the way, the idea of MT and Friedrich being on separate watches is fine. As long as they are stationed near each other, Friedrich is confident that he can step in front of a charging horde of ghouls to keep them away from Mary.

In the past, though, Mary(Venger) has balked at some seemingly trivial things that Friedrich has asked of her and this is not something that Friedrich will push if she insists on riding her own camel/ The only thing Mary ever asked for in exchange for her efforts on behalf of the party was training in the magical arts. Not money, not magic items. She finally took exception after her training was ignored for 30+ days and Friedrich requested that she focus her skills as a 6th level magic-user on fetching him sandwiches... She'll share a camel if necessary.

She'll share a camel if necessary. Bolo thanks Mary politely for accepting his suggestion. At all times, and especially while sharing Mary's camel, he will behave as respectfully and pleasantly to her as his 12 charisma permits. By the way, he asks, has Mary named her camel yet?

Instead, one of the heavy hitters should be there as a rearguard. Paavo and Dan can switch places. I am not worried about the pack camel. The only thing it is carrying are supplies for the other camels. According to the MM, camels can go 2 weeks without food or water. Also, what about PfE? Doesn't one of the new people provide this? If so, are he and Paavo at opposite ends of the formation so everyone is covered? PfE/PfG comes in two varieties. Personal and 10' radius. I believe Colby, Khaddil and maybe Haddiq have personal protection. Paavo is the only one with the 10' radius kind. The clerics (Haddiq and Dan) can cast individual PfE if memorized. They currently use most of their 1st level spells for other purposes. Oddly the magic-users do not have PfE even though it was available from the College. In addition we have protective salts that can be used to form barriers and a perfume bottle that gives at least personal PfE. We have never tried the perfume. Colby is currently carrying it but he doesn't need it as much with his torc of PfG. Hopefully PfE shouldn't be an issue as we are leaving the Ovens of Ar-Gar forthwith. I agree that traveling as three squads, widely separated, sounds sort of cool. But in practical terms I think it runs too many risks -- separated by an unexpected sandstorm, one squad surrounded before the others can connect up with them, etc. I wouldn't go widely separated. I was thinking 6" at most. Camels move at 21" so that distance is not much. No offense to Gabul, but he doesn't bring much to the Party. I would rather have him doubling up with someone so that the people with more firepower have better mobility. Putting Bolo and Mary together limits their individual effectiveness. Bolo may want to move in order to maximize his bow while Mary may be happy casting distance spells from the relative safety of the group. Putting Gabul with Mary might be a better idea since that way he can defend her while she is casting spells.

As long as they are stationed near each other, Friedrich is confident that he can step in front of a charging horde of ghouls to keep them away from Mary. Mary is a 6th level magic user. She should act like one. She can cast Fly or Levitate and get out of range of most things. Then rain down Fireballs, Lightning Bolts, Magic Missiles, etc. Also we were attacked at night outdoors and she didn't even think to use the ring of shooting stars. Step up. BTW, make sure you swap out Web while we are in the desert. It is going to be useless. But indoors it is a nice thing to have. Maybe you should consult Colby for some advice and to make sure you two don't overlap too much.

And he's 3/2 with it, so I guess he could teach it single specialized. But I wouldn't think he could teach throwing 3 daggers per round. Just the 3/2 melee routine.

Dan can teach proficiency with mace or flail. Paavo can teach proficiency with the bastard sword (he dropped his mace proficiency when he learned the scimitar).
Mamnoon uses an over-sized scimitar that deals damage like a bastard sword. He is double specialized with it. He may deign to teach it. He is also a fine shot with his composite bow.

Rings are also at 12th level (11th maybe?) so they'll beat a lot of magic resistance. Colby's loadout was sadly optimized for bandit fighting instead of ghoul fighting. Once we're out of the Ovens, he's heavy on Sleep and Stinking Cloud. For your two 3rd level spells, I'd rely on Fireball and Slow. As an aside, I didn't take PfE from the Library because so many people have it already through items or spells.

But I wouldn't think he could teach throwing 3 daggers per round. Just the 3/2 melee routine. Yeah, that's true... probably should go with the scimitar then. Gabul would feel comfortable with that weapon. He might not feel so comfortable in a suit of platemail but you never know. Paavo can teach proficiency with the bastard sword (he dropped his mace proficiency when he learned the scimitar). That makes more sense. Maybe I can take the mace (0) off your sheet.

I am not worried about the pack camel. The only thing it is carrying are supplies for the other camels. According to the MM, camels can go 2 weeks without food or water. 2 weeks before they keel over, yes. But Khaddil's concerns are with regard to the overall journey. The camels were moving at a 21" and with the side-trek to the Ovens of Ar-Gar the roundtrip journey from the Great Oasis to the Tower of the Forbidden Gods was going to take 25 days. He provisioned accordingly, not counting on the party's ability to create food or water. He'll need to do some calculations and spread the load around, but his issues are as follows: Camels can be loaded to 4000GP wgt and move at a 15" or 6000GP wgt and move at a 9". At a 15", the journey will take an additional 8-10 days, which is more random encounters and more consumption of food/water. At a 9", the journey will take an additional 20-30 days, etc. If the camels die, the journey will be on foot and will take 40+ additional days and all the random encounters, bad weather fx, etc. that come with it. Yeah, the ring of shooting stars is AWESOME. Use it or lose it. Mary's Fireball was effective but I would agree that the Ball Lightning or the Shooting Star meteor shower effects would have really devastated the ghul charge.

Is demon hide good for wrapping books in?
Is there residual magic resistance in the hide for bonuses to saves?
Are demon parts used in any potions?
Will Freidrich gain some of their powers if he eats a demon heart?

I didn't realize it was that far between the Great Oasis and the Tower. We only have 50 days or so left on the secure vault in Barb-el-Shay. We have been traveling for something like 15 days. We have a little cushion at the current rate, but additional delays could be costly.
We could always turn back. We have the demon hides which were needed to ensure Haddiq loyalty. We could head back to the Great Oasis and purchase additional camels and then go the Khosura which is on the way back to Barb-el-Shay.
Can you give us the total encumbrance for the party? You will need everyone's weight. We will have to see how much we can store in the q-box.
In hindsight, we should have purchased an additional camel at the Great Oasis. We should have also extended the secure vault. We didn't factor in the extra time in the city to train Mary and get Friedrich raised from the dead.

The party purchased twelve camels. Friedrich and Nordel were sharing a camel. So that meant the party was only using nine for riding purposes. That means there were three extra camels. Two to carry supplies and one left over. I guess that was Mamnoon's camel as everyone else (but Friedrich/Nordel) should have had their own. I didn't realize it was that far between the Great Oasis and the Tower. How long does he think it will take to reach the Tower of Forbidden Gods? 10 days to the Great Oasis, 10 more to that blasphemous place. You were looking at 40+ days roundtrip, not counting time spent at any of the above destinations or Khosura. The side-trip into the Ovens of Ar-Gar added 5 days onto that. Can you give us the total encumbrance for the party? You will need everyone's weight. We will have to see how much we can store in the q-box. The updated encumbrance is at home, so I'll have to get it later. The actual weight of a human/demihuman doesn't have too much bearing on how much they encumber a camel, GP wgt encumbrance being a factor of a number of things: size, weight, wieldiness, etc. As the party invested in saddles and tack for their camels humans are going to encumber approximately 1500wgt. and demihumans a fraction thereof, in addition to their equipment. I will add in a camel encumbrance/movement rate to each character sheet and update the party as to their remaining capacities.

Once we complete our quest there, we can head back to Barb-el-Shay and get Colby trained. Then we'll have 5th level spells when we tackle The Tower of the Forbidden Gods.

The cart in the quantum box can hold at max capacity 6500GP enc wgt. I looked it up.
If the party does not make it back to Barb-el-Shay in time to reclaim their vault, the items are kept for an additional month (at a rate of 100 dinars) before being auctioned off.

If the party does not make it back to Barb-el-Shay in time to reclaim their vault ... One option would be for a couple of us to join up with a caravan at the Oasis and head back to Barb separately, while the rest of the party does whatever it does. The Barb contingent could extend our lease on the vault, maybe train, maybe do some other extracurricular activities, and hook back up with the rest of the gang at a later point. I'm not necessarily advocating this, let alone volunteering, just throwing it out there as an option to keep in mind.

We need to toughen up our henchmen, so they should stick with us. Knowing that there's a grace period on the vault makes me comfortable with sticking with the original plan.

Trommer doesn't really care if the spellbooks he carries get destroyed if the backback fails a save. His suggestion was for any mage who might want to encase/wrap the books in an extra layer of protection of demon skin. Team Dervish is welcome to their trophies. Trommer will endeavor not be so presumtuous in the future to suggest that such a thing would help.
