Bolo will be glad to introduce Colby to Bhatandu. And to the extent that Bolo knows where to find the Faceless Man in the slums, he will gladly give Colby directions.

Colby will check with the college of magic to see if he can pay his tuition/training with magic items. Tuition, no. Costs for training, maybe. At Colby's level a magic-user of no small ability will be required to spend a considerable amount of their valuable time (which could, and may already be, devoted elsewhere), so it's really up to them, on a case-by-case basis, what renumeration they find acceptable. And there is a base gold piece cost associated with the material aspects of the training that isn't wholly the instructor's fee. Basically, while the item may be worth the money in exchange, the instructing magic-user might prefer the liquid cash asset. The sale of ridiculously high-end items (jewelry/magic/etc) is fairly subjective in that they're only really worth what someone will pay for them. Azul-azrad will helpfully supply that all the faculty of the college pursue their own magical agendas, as far as research and fabrication of items, and that they might have specific magic items/books/scrolls that they are personally seeking which they might consider worth trading for tutelage... again, on a case-by-case basis. But Colby isn't even enrolled at the college, so it's moot.

Hmm, maybe the Sultan would be interested When/if Bolo returns from his adventures in the other thread with Bhatandu and Buulda, he will report the three rumors he heard at the Green Parrot: 1. The gladiator Mahât uses a poisoned spear in the Fighting Pits. 2. The slavers have become increasingly bold, sometimes kidnapping people at the very gates of the city. 3. The desert bandits plaguing the caravan route have united under a mysterious new leader. The Sultan has offered a reward of 20,000 dinars for this man, dead or alive. The mention of 20,000gp is always sure to get Bolo's attention. He suggests that we go after the bandit leader as soon as the rest of the Entioch party get back. When we get the reward, that will be a perfect opportunity to mention the scimitar and the mega-crossbow to the Sultan. Bolo will also report that the Green Parrot is dim and foul-smelling, with a hostile clientele. He doesn't recommend it as an alternative residence.

The sale of ridiculously high-end items (jewelry/magic/etc) is fairly subjective in that they're only really worth what someone will pay for them. Perhaps we should take this to mean that we're never really going to get a solid appraisal for the ivy ring, the dragon dish, and the jade circlet. Perhaps they are just worth whatever we can get for them. If so, then we might as well sell them now for the offers Bolo has already found, which total 2450gp in cash and a bag of 20 fiery red carnelians (valued at 50gp each). Distributing all that into the usual shares would leave both Colby and the party fund with plenty to pay the 50-50 split on tuition of 1000gp. At which point, trading items for tutelage would sound like a fine idea. Rounding down in favor of the party fund as before, the new distribution would look like this: Everyone except Friedrich and Colby: additional 200gp in gem value Friedrich: IOU reduced by 160gp Colby: additional 155gp in gem value and 36gp in cash -- and swap out his previous allocation of 580gp in gem value for 464gp cash (for a total of 500gp cash) If Colby agrees and nobody else objects, I will rejigger the gem division to reflect this so we don't have to deal with it on Sunday.

Friedrich wants both money and glory but glory more. He will fight his way up through the undercards.
What equipment is he to wear when fighting?
Are combatants allowed to have pre-fight buffing spells cast on them?
It seems that his heavy armor will be a hindrance in combat given the heat. What if Friedrich is scheduled for a night time fight, will it still be so hot as to make wearing his armor unbearable?
Either way, Freidrich will start on the undercard as soon as possible. Go ahead and roll it out on the board. He will wear his armor if it is doable if not he will go in with the best equipment that the school can supply him with and smash something ASAP. His shield will be equipped of course unless there are restrictions on magic items.

OK, here is a revised allocation of gems into shares, as proposed last night, assuming that we sell the ivy ring, dragon dish, and jade circlet. I've deleted the 5 sparkling gems (20gp each) that were just liquidated for two days of lodging, and I've added 14gp cash for wine sales on those two days.
Bolo: share already claimed - star-shaped diamond (400gp), 3 pale green peridots (50gp each; one of these already given away in the other thread) - plus 4 fiery red carnelians (50gp each) Colby: 500gp cash, 2 fiery red carnelians (50gp each), cut spinel gemstone (30gp), uncut diamond of Jeru (25gp) Dan: large square-cut emerald (250gp), 3 opals (100gp each), 4 pale green peridots (50gp each), cut spinel gemstone (30gp) Finnious: share already claimed - imperial garnet (100gp), 9 topaz stones (50gp each), 1 cut spinel gemstone (30gp) - plus 4 fiery red carnelians (50gp each) Friedrich: (IOU to party 240gp) Ingrid: 3 large square-cut emeralds (250gp each), cut spinel gemstone (30gp) Mary: 4 fiery red carnelians (50gp each) Nordel: share already claimed - 2 large square-cut emeralds (250gp each), topaz stone (50gp), cut spinel gemstone (30gp) - plus 4 fiery red carnelians (50gp each) Paavo: large sapphire (300gp), 4 pale green peridots (50gp each), cut spinel gemstone (30gp) Trommer: 2 large square-cut emeralds (250gp), blue gem (120gp), opal (100gp), 3 sparkling gems (20gp each) Xiles: payment of 100gp already given Party fund: 1964gp cash, Friedrich IOU for 240gp, topaz stone (50gp), 2 fiery red carnelians (50gp each), 3 pale green peridots (50gp each), cut spinel gemstone (30gp), 5 uncut diamonds of Jeru (25gp each), 5 sparkling gems (20gp each)

Friedrich wants both money and glory but glory more. He will fight his way up through the undercards. Friedrich fights in 3 days, on Day 20. What equipment is he to wear when fighting? Standard equipment and the Eternal Axe colors. Are combatants allowed to have pre-fight buffing spells cast on them? No, that's cheating. It seems that his heavy armor will be a hindrance in combat given the heat. What if Friedrich is scheduled for a night time fight, will it still be so hot as to make wearing his armor unbearable? People don't pay to come to the arena to watch fights in the dark. There are evening bouts, but wearing the armor isn't a factor so much as the exertion of fighting in it in the heat. After a few rounds of combat Friedrich will begin to suffer penalties to str/dex/con as well as movement rate and attack rolls. After a turn, Friedrich will need to make constitution checks (at increasing penalty) or suffer heat exhaustion, or worse, heat stroke. These exact effects can be found in the Wilderness Survival Guide. Either way, Freidrich will start on the undercard as soon as possible. Go ahead and roll it out on the board. Friedrich will fight in session. I don't think the party will pass 3 days on the board between now and then. His trainers still feel he has a lot to learn about gladiatorial combat. There are many factors that can come into play which will make a fight more than just an exchange of hits, including: special terrain features in the arena, special circumstance matches, uneven bouts, the influence of the crowd which can inspire or demoralize a competitor, off-hand weapons, nets, exotic pole-arms, archers, etc... He will wear his armor if it is doable if not he will go in with the best equipment that the school can supply him with and smash something ASAP. If he thinks he can win quickly, the armor might be viable. If not, it could be a hinderance. There's plenty of lighter, less encumbering armor available: chain, splint, even banded mail. His shield will be equipped of course unless there are restrictions on magic items. No magic in the arena. Period. Otherwise it's a question who has the best magic sword/armor or the most magic buffs, and not a true test of a warrior. The punishment for cheating is disqualification/death.

I have a feeling I know the answer, but ... just Trommer? What's his story? We'll recap fully tomorrow. Suffice it to say, like Colby, he awoke confused, in a strange desert, in a strange land, amongst strange people who spoke a strange language that he did not understand. Once it was established he wasn't in some bizarre afterlife, the only path available to him was a well-travelled road -- in all other directions trackless desert. Or the option to remain with the lepers, pilgrims and fanatics at the base of their holy rock. A week later he's picked up some rudiments of the language, learned a smattering about the area (it's hot & dry) and made it to an enormous city. The Foreign District makes things easier and he reconnects with the party.

Does this mean Colby's tuition is paid? If he wants it paid, then take it out of the revised allocations I just posted (the 500gp cash that's in his share, and 500gp out of the 1964gp cash in the party fund). But I haven't reflected that yet in the totals, because the last I heard, Colby was still debating whether he wanted to go that route.

He'll inquire about costs, and is willing to consider offers on any of the party's unassigned magic items or his own personal items, except for Arcadian. Tomorrow we'll deduct 1000GP for his tuition from the remaining funds. Then we can roll actual training costs/time. Then we'll see which magic-user of the college is available to train Colby and how bad I can gouge you. **and how would you plan on presenting all these magic items for consideration??

Does Barb-el-shay contain any type of charitable organization that primarily benefits halflings? Perhaps an orphanage for halfling children? A home for halfling unwed mothers? A job training program for underprivileged halfling youths? An institution promoting learned study of halfling language and culture? Bolo is thinking of making a donation.

I tried to do a magic item inventory for the party. I am sure there are some items missing or items that we may no longer have. Also some of the descriptions may not be completely accurate. The DM can correct this. I have not included magic user scrolls or spell books. Hopefully this list will help best equip the members of the party. Also we can decide what to try to sell. In terms of armor and shields we currently have Friedrich - field plate, shield brooch Trommer - +1 ultralight plate, +1 shield Paavo - +1 ultralight plate, no shield Dan - damage reduction chainmail, anti-magic shield Nordel - +3 studded leather, tower shield?
Paavo's main weapon is no longer two-handed. So he can start using a shield. Also the Holy Avenger confers 50% MR within 5' radius circle.
We now have some additional armor: an electrum-coated ringmail shirt - 5% magic resistance and minor protection a suit of green-lacquered splint-mail (abjuration/enchantment) - moderate enchantment
It may make more sense for Trommer to take the splint mail and the anti-magic shield. Dan to take the 5% MR ring mail and +1 shield. And Paavo to take the damage reduction chainmail and a regular shield. Paavo has fewer hit points so the damage reduction is good and has better saves so doesn't need the protection as much. Trommer would get armor at least as good as the +1 plate and the shield would help against spells. Dan has never been much of a combatant, so he is fine with the protection from the ringmail and shield. The MR will hopefully stop his spells from being disrupted.
Nordel could then choose to keep the +3 studded leather (AC 4) or take one of the +1 ultralight plate (AC 2). I know I suggested Nordel take the splint but I think it would serve one of the front line fighters better.
Friedrich is a tank and until we find amazing dwarven armor should be fine.
Question for DM: The splint is listed as adjuration/enchantment. What is the abjuration aspect of its magic? Or is that standard for all protective magics?

Here are some items I think we could sell:
a sabre - flaming sword a flanged mace (enchantment) - moderate enchantment a bardiche (enchantment) - moderate enchantment a fauchard fork (enchantment) - sonic attack, minor enchantment morningstar (Dead Sun Rising) a sphere of polished chalcedony - contact other plane (elemental: air) 1/week gold hookah (invocation) - ever smoking Lemarchand puzzle box bag of bones bloodstone talisman (sustenance) gold demon mask fizzy black potion (unnatural regeneration) bronze bear belt cord of binding potion (raw mana)
The weapons would be good to have if we get henchman and need to supply them. Otherwise they are just dead weight. The other items we never use.
Paavo also feels that Arcadian is having a corrupting influence on Colby and Mary and should either be destroyed or sold/given to a powerful good magic user who can properly deal with it.
We could also try to sell the ultralight armor to raise funds. But it would be good to keep them for later henchman.

Speaking of Sherlane. Paavo suggests Colby uses the Lesser Spell of Invaded Dreams to contact Sherlane and apprise him of our situation. There isn't anything he can do to help us given the distance. Maybe he can let the Baron know about Friedrich's extended absence for the foreseeable future from Fenhold. Also I would suggest we tell Sherlane about the Artificer's Hammer. Maybe he can use it to create weapons that can help in the fight against the Shadowlord. If the Church doesn't frown on that too much. Sherlane may also have some advice on how to deal with Arcadian now that you know the full extent of its evil nature.

We probably won't get the henchman until we complete the quest, unless we make a side trip back to the Entioch. We could go on the excuse of trying to convince Ingrid to rejoin us. When she says no then we can ask for additional clerical assistance from Fizzi.

Sherlane was pretty insistent about not invading his dreams unless it was truly urgent. I think I'd rather wait until getting 5th level spell training and using a Sending spell.
You guys might think this series of PMs is amusing.
Arcadian wants to know if Colby has any specific plans for surviving 7 days across the desert without food or water. Maybe he can help...
The Lamas placed a full waterskin* and a week's rations in Colby's pack anyway.
Arcadian was just making conversation. He offers to train Colby 5th level spells at whatever minimal cost for materials, etc. if Colby is willing to strike a bargain with him. He mentions deferred payment and low monthly installment plans.
Me: I'll politely demure from Arcadian's offer. I'll ask if he can confirm that I'm back on the PMP.
The gem glows a sullen orange and Arcadian does not respond. Maybe his feelings are hurt.
Me: I'll pet the gem and tell Arcadian that he's doing a great job trying to lure me into selling my soul. It's not him, it's me.

Maybe we should see if we can trade some items. Rings of protection or bracers of defense shouldn't be too hard to come by. You can check the Grand Bazaar and the Street of Magicians. Any magic item we purchase/trade will require pearls to identify/verify its properties.
Paavo will ask around the Street of Magicians for aids to strength - potions of giant strength, gauntlets of ogre strength, girdles of giant strength. Can he borrow the Helm of Telepathy to make sure they are dealing straight with him?
