Do we still have the four brass-bound chests that used to contain the Gazolba-bird cash? If so, we will sell them. Note to the DM: When liquidating GJO to get cash for lodging expenses, sage fees, etc., please select items with a high ratio of encumbrance to value. I imagine (perhaps incorrectly) that this will mean goblets, chalices, daggers, nuggets, and so on go first, and loose gems go last. But the specifics are at your discretion unless someone else wants to prioritize the list. (I don't.) If Bolo can work it in around his thieving activities in the other thread, he and Finnious (and Xiles if he wants to go) will visit the sage. When the Entioch expedition returns, we can make another visit if we want to. On this visit, we'll carry the following items with us in the quantum box: (a) the ivy ring, the dragon serving dish, and the jade circlet; (b) all the unidentified magic items; and (c) the floating toad bottles, the displacer beast pelts, and the mega-crossbow. The rest of the Barb-el-Shay segment of the party will remain at the inn to guard the rest of our stuff. We will ask about the following: - Valuation of the ivy ring, the dragon serving dish, and the jade circlet. Can the sage direct us to a collector of special items like these, who might be more interested in them than just a random jeweler in the city?
- Identification of the magic items. Can the sage direct us to a specialist dealer in magical items like these, in the event that we decide to sell some of them?
- Identification of the floating toad bottles. We believe these are nonmagical, but we don't know what the point of them is.
- What magical items could be made with the displacer beast pelts? What would be the likely cost of the various options, and who would we need to hire to do the work? If we instead just sold the pelts, can the sage direct us to a likely buyer, and what would we likely get for them?
- Is the mega-crossbow sufficiently unusual to be of potential interest to the sultan's army? Or is it already a known technology here in the metropolis?
- Any additional information about the Demonspore
- How to get back to Devonshire
- If Xiles comes, how he can get back to Achaea
If we can't get all this out of one 200gp consultation, then please give us just 200gp worth, along with an estimate of how many consultations the rest would take. Ok, Finnious is on board with all of this.

While Bolo's adventures are interesting and hilarious, maybe he can take a break after recovering the chalice so we can fast forward the campaign? I am fine with fast-forwarding. Bolo's adventures are intended primarily to keep him occupied productively while we sit around waiting for the Entioch people to return and for Friedrich to finish his training. It's great for him to have some thiefly stuff to do for a change, but I have no desire to hold up the game for everyone else.

I was hoping to do it on the board! I'm just hoping the board can jump forward to day 14 (or whenever people start trickling in from Entioch.) Oh, I thought you were stalling. I'm happy to advance as many days as you want. I assume the sage will function similarly to Benesarius and get a roll for every item we have. If he can identify things faster and cheaper, it makes sense to do it that way and save the pearls for other stuff. Assuming the sage's field of study has anything to do with magical artifacts or the arcane in general, it's still going to be extremely time-consuming (EXPENSIVE) to have the sage attempt to research the properties of each item considering their foreign (to this locale) manufacture. While Bolo's adventures are interesting and hilarious, maybe he can take a break after recovering the chalice so we can fast forward the campaign? I am fine with fast-forwarding. It's great for him to have some thiefly stuff to do for a change, but I have no desire to hold up the game for everyone else. Bolo's side adventures have no relation to this thread (yet), assume that they sync up somehow with the periods of time not detailed herein. Nothing he does will slow the march of time for the rest of the party.

Does the sage have an assistant we can talk to and get a sense for the time and costs of his various services?
Given the hint that the sage will not be the best at identifying items, I vote we buy pearls and do it ourselves. Here's my list, mostly prioritizing things with multiple varieties.
1. Ring of Shooting Stars (more identification) 2. a suit of green-lacquered splint-mail (m) (abjuration/enchantment) 3. an electrum-coated ringmail shirt (m) (abjuration/enchantment) 4. lobster mail 5. an ornate copper brazier (m) (invocation/conjuration) 6. a sabre (m) (enchantment) (abjuration/enchantment)
a steel shield with a lone tower (m) - there was no note from Finn about the type of magic via his wizard sight. Was there nothing to report, or was that an oversight?

I vote we buy pearls and do it ourselves. Bolo is fine with this. What's the best way to prioritize identification? Pearls are expensive here, so it would make sense to prioritize (a) items we think we may want to use before we get back to Devonshire, and (b) items we think we may want to sell before heading back to Devonshire. So far, we seem to have focused mostly on (a) rather than (b). Maybe we should think more about identifying stuff we think won't be useful, but may be valuable. But Bolo doesn't know squat about magic, so he will certainly defer to Finn's advice.

My goal is to identify things that we suspect are more greatly enchanted. They are thus more useful to us and will also fetch a higher price. However, Bolo's point is very well taken, and I'll put the scimitar near the top of our identification list. Since it's the sword of choice here, it should be easy to sell.

Do we still have the four brass-bound chests that used to contain the Gazolba-bird cash? If so, we will sell them. They fetch 10 gold dinars apiece. (I don't.) I'll try. Chalices and goblets only weigh 20-30gp enc. wgt. but are usually worth 5-10x that amount. Daggers weigh their PHB amount (10GP enc. wgt.) If Bolo can work it in around his thieving activities in the other thread, he and Finnious (and Xiles if he wants to go) will visit the sage. Dwelb Abuyalm's residence is a cheerful structure located on the edge of the Foreign District. A prominent sign, written in four distinct languages, advertises him as a most learned sage-for-hire. The sage himself is a tall man with a distinguished bearing. He is clearly from another land, his skin being a dusky purple in color. He dresses in flowing yellow robes trimmed with indigo, and wears a like-colored head-wrap. For two-hundred gold dinars (-200GP) he is most pleased to consult with the party, answering all inquiries to the best of his ability. He also offers a number of exotics for sale: coffee (stimulant, increases reaction adj. time, known to be addictive...) 100 gold dinar/lb goldenroot elixir (a curative) 80 gold dinar/draught silverweed (stimulant/poison, its primary effect is newfound vigor; but will severely damage constitution. "Silverweed is also known to raise the recently dead if used within 1d6 minutes, although its secondary effects make this a risky gamble indeed.") 480 gold dinar/weed blue lotus (slows/cures poison) 300 gold dinar/blossom Valuation of the ivy ring, the dragon serving dish, and the jade circlet. Can the sage direct us to a collector of special items like these, who might be more interested in them than just a random jeweler in the city? The stone on the ivy ring, he recognizes as an emerald, but beyond that he can tell the party nothing. On the serving dish he has no insights. He thinks the jade circlet was crafted by/for a magician, for the purposes of a spell. He reads from a passage in a worn storybook: " And lo, Serathanes spoke the words of his spell, set the circlet of jade upon his brow and in his place stood the phoenix, a bird of marvelous living flame... ..." Identification of the magic items. Can the sage direct us to a specialist dealer in magical items like these, in the event that we decide to sell some of them? Dwelb Abuyalm would need time to study and research each specific item the party wanted identified - he really has no idea how long it would take until he started. He'd need an upfront retainer for expenses as he most likely would consult with some magicians he knows. As for the sale of magic items: he would suggest the College of General & Applied Magicks, if one can gain entry, or the many wizard-proprietors of the shops on the Street of Magicians. Identification of the floating toad bottles. We believe these are nonmagical, but we don't know what the point of them is. He consults a book... Dwelb Abuyalm believes that the toads secrete a powerful psychotropic poison which induces hallucinations and sometimes death. He's heard of primitive tribes using these secretions in small doses to induce dreams/visions/hallucinations and out of body experiences. What magical items could be made with the displacer beast pelts? What would be the likely cost of the various options, and who would we need to hire to do the work? If we instead just sold the pelts, can the sage direct us to a likely buyer, and what would we likely get for them? He suggests consulting a magician. He apologizes, admitting that he has no clue as to the worth of the pelts, his fields of expertise lying elsewhere... Is the mega-crossbow sufficiently unusual to be of potential interest to the sultan's army? Or is it already a known technology here in the metropolis? The item resembles the stock & trigger mechanism of a heavy crossbow attached to a reinforced metal tube. Dwelb Abuyalm's eyes light up when he sees the item. He's certain it's a powerful and dangerous projectile weapon, but he's only read about such a thing. With some research and study he thinks he might be able to find out more. Any additional information about the Demonspore Dwelb Abuyalm is intrigued by this term, "Demonspore," considering himself an expert botanist, and agrees to research it for the party at a rate of 200 dinars per day. He seems entirely confident that he can discover its nature. How to get back to Devonshire Map. Dwelb Abuyalm is sure the party hails from some unknown barbarian kingdoms north of the Old Empire, beyond the fabled Black Peaks. If Xiles comes, how he can get back to Achaea Xiles is well aware of how to get back, mumbling something about it being much easier with a flying ship, but he thanks Bolo for his concern.

Tired, hungry and sun-burned, Colby arrives in Barb-el-Shay... Just Colby? The sage seems to have been mostly a bust, unless someone is interested in the exotics he's selling, which may or may not actually perform as advertised. Having him do further research about the Demonspore seems like a good way to flush money down the latrine. Or am I too pessimistic? His interest in the mega-crossbow seems genuine. Perhaps that means the sultan's army would also be interested. Perhaps we should try selling it. Any opinions on this?

Just Colby. The sage seems to have been mostly a bust... Or am I too pessimistic? The rates are standard (from the DMG), he is not interested in ripping anyone off. He is also not asking for an indefinite term of employment and estimates an answer in 2-12 days. Or a refund of the party's monies, not including the initial 200GP consultation fee.

Finnious spends increasing amounts of time under the effects of his Invisibility spells, his comings and goings difficult to follow. It is clear that on recent nights he has not been sleeping at the Inn of the Seven Silks and when questioned becomes defensive, claiming that he's certain he's being followed/watched by unknown parties.

Colby will do an inn by inn search of the foreign sector of the city until he locates the party. Once he finds them, he'll explain that he woke up alone in Entioch and wandered to the city. He has no idea where everyone else is, but once learning that Ingrid is with Paavo, he'll consider that she would slow them down on the walk back. Once given access to spell books, he'll memorize scry and attempt to locate them.
Colby will attempt to appraise the three valuable items we're still trying to sell. He'll recommend to Mary that she take the brazier to the Wizard College and test it out in their summoning room, using the proper protections.

Bolo will support whatever Colby advises about whether to pay the sage 400-2400gp for research on the Demonspore. He will note, however, that another five days of lodging, after wine sales, will bring the party account down to near zero. So if we're paying sage fees, we'll definitely need to sell some more loot to cover them, unless people are willing to take IOUs from the party account in lieu of their shares. Bolo's preference would be to sell some excess magic items. He suggests the scimitar.
Speaking of loot shares, Nordel will claim the following for himself: two of the large square-cut emeralds (250gp each), a topaz stone (50gp), and a cut spinel gemstone (30gp). He'll retain his right to the small amount that remains unclaimed after taking these. He is not interested in taking any IOUs.
I'll do another accounting update tonight.
What's going on with Finn? Paranoia? Insanity? Possession? Bolo has a bad feeling about this, but no ideas about how to address it, as all of the above are well outside his expertise.

Re: Finnious, I have 2 theories. First, he spent three days reading an evil book of demonology, which prompted a DM comment that he was acting withdrawn and weird. Second, it's the DM roleplaying him out of the campaign temporarily. It could also be a combination of the two.
Colby will see if he can gather our group together for a minute. He'll offer profuse thanks for helping him out while he was in trouble. He'll promise to try to go at least six months before dying again. He'll mention that there was a bunch of weird stuff going on in the ethereal plane, and that he'd like to cast "Dispel Magic" on everyone to get rid of any lingering effects.
Finnious might require a Remove Curse, but hopefully the dispel magic will have some effect.

unless someone is interested in the exotics he's selling, which may or may not actually perform as advertised. The sage will allow skeptics to sample a cup of coffee, which is very strong and dark. Anyone who does so feels more alert. Dwelb Abuyalm says that there are a few coffee houses in the nicer parts of the city, (recognizable by the smell) and they are even more expensive. He claims says that some magic-users swear by it, finding that they need less sleep for spell memorization... Colby will do an inn by inn search of the foreign sector of the city until he locates the party. The guards don't much hassle lepers and pilgrims coming from Entioch. Colby has little trouble bluffing his way through the gates. Once given access to spell books, he'll memorize scry and attempt to locate them. Scry has a range of 36"/level. Colby scours several miles of empty, trackless desert. Colby will attempt to appraise the three valuable items we're still trying to sell. (on 5 dice...) ivy ring w/marquis emerald: 1000GP?? gold dragon serving dish: 300GP? jade circlet: ??? Yes, Friedrich is reading the book. On Day 14, Friedrich completes a grueling 2/1 axe training regimen under the veteran trainers of the Fighting Pits and immediately starts reading the fitness manual for the next four days. Is Friedrich returning to the Inn of Seven Silks or will he continue to bunk in the order-house of the Eternal Axe?

After Colby tries his dispel magic scheme on the party, he'll visit the magic colleges. Starting with general magic and then going to the 4 elemental ones. He'll inquire if those are the only schools and try to get a list of them if there are more.
He's going to inquire about training, spell access, dues, the perks of joining a particular school over the others, and if there are any general restrictions on spell casting in the city.

After Colby tries his dispel magic scheme on the party... There is no tangible effect. Finnious checks in even less frequently, unwilling to stay too long in one place, ceding his room at the Inn of Seven Silks to Colby. he'll visit the magic colleges. Starting with general magic and then going to the 4 elemental ones. He'll inquire if those are the only schools and try to get a list of them if there are more. Colby has no trouble reading and casting the Knock variant on the magic wall. There is only one campus; it contains the College of General & Applied Magicks and the four (ivory) Towers of Elemental Sorcery. The Dean of Admissions, Azul-azrad, claims that it rivals the famed College of Arcane Sciences in the old Imperial City. He's going to inquire about training, spell access, dues, the perks of joining a particular school over the others, and if there are any general restrictions on spell casting in the city. 1000GP tuition per year grants access to the spell library which contains all commonly known (1st and 2nd level PHB) spells, the laboratories (alchemist, etc), the summoning chambers, the spell research library (DMG pg. 115), the faculty/teachers, etc. He will discuss no training costs before the tuition is paid. Azul-azrad explains that the wizards of the Towers of Elemental Sorcery scorn the "accepted" theories of magical classification in favor of a holistic, natural understanding of magic. The result is elementalism. Elementalism is not a school in itself; it is an area of specialization focusing on the four prime elements of air, earth, fire and water. Though their repertoire of spells is limited due to strict specialization, elementalists are extremely potent sorcerers with great power over their chosen element.

I'll take his silence on any particular restrictions to mean that I won't get in trouble just for using magic in the city.
What do you guys think? It seems like we only really need one member of the college, since you don't get all that much.
There's The Faceless Man in the slums. He seems like he could be more Colby's style. If anyone would like to volunteer his or her soul as payment, Arcadian will take it to provide training for free. If Bolo finishes his adventure in time, Colby will see if he can make an introduction.
Otherwise, he'll check out the Street of Magicians, bringing the scimitar. He'll see what prices he can get. He won't bring the sabre, but he'll describe it and see what kind of price range he gets. He'll chat up the wizards and see if any know of any other routes to training.

I assume that Friedrich can use the book while there. Yes. Friedrich was also under the impression that they expected him to fight at on their behalf, give them a 20% cut, represent them yada yada, yada… Admittedly, Friedrich seems a hardy, trained warrior but there are many looking to fight (and die) in the Fighting Pits of Barb-el-Shay and he approached them looking for training, and they've invested time & money (half the cost) on him. Yes, they are looking for a return on that investment but Friedrich is still unproven. The Pitmaster decides the match-ups, partly based on skill, partly based on his cruel sense of humor-- so if Friedrich is all done training, he can present himself to Urgos ap Ur on behalf of the Eternal Axe ~ "OORAH!" Friedrich wants to fight!!!! Does he want to earn money or glory? And if both, which one more? If it's glory, he'll need to work his way up through the gladiators in the undercard circuit. Assuming he goes undefeated it should only take a couple weeks for him to be a crowd draw. The Pitmaster can broker a fight with someone of Friedrich's skill level within the week. Or there's a grand melee every month where he can try to make a name for himself, but that's not for a few weeks. And there's always a wild animal/monster to fight for gold if that's what he's after and doesn't mind being typecast as a beast-fighter. Let me know which of these appeals to you, or all of them, and if you want me to roll on the board for any combats Friedrich draws or if you want to wait until Sunday.

PARTY FINANCE REPORT:Final calculation as of 8/3, 2:17pm--- To simplify things, Bolo suggests that we (a) round all our shares down to the nearest multiple of 10gp gem value, returning the change to the party fund; (b) forgive Mary's modest IOU; and (c) round Friedrich's IOU down to an even 400gp. Assuming nobody objects, this leaves the situation as follows: Finnious: share already claimed in gems - 1 cut spinel gemstone (30gp), 9 topaz stones (50gp each), imperial garnet (100gp) Nordel: share already claimed in gems - 2 large square-cut emeralds (250gp each), topaz stone (50gp), cut spinel gemstone (30gp) Bolo: share already claimed in gems - star-shaped diamond (400gp), 3 pale green peridots (50gp each, one already given away in the other thread) Xiles: payment of 100gp already given Mary: even Friedrich: IOU to party 400gp Ingrid, Colby, Trommer, and Dan: unclaimed share in gems of value 580gp Paavo: unclaimed share in gems of value 320gp To speed things up on Sunday, I suggest the following division of the as-yet unclaimed gems: Ingrid: 2 large square-cut emeralds (250gp each), topaz stone (50gp), cut spinel gemstone (30gp) Colby: 2 large square-cut emeralds (250gp each), pale green peridot (50gp), cut spinel gemstone (30gp) Trommer: large square-cut emerald (250gp), blue gem (120gp), opal (100gp), 2 uncut diamonds of Jeru (25gp each), 3 sparkling gems (20gp each) Dan: large square-cut emerald (250gp), 3 opals (100gp each), cut spinel gemstone (30gp) Paavo: large sapphire (300gp), sparkling gem (20gp) Party fund: 4 uncut diamonds of Jeru (25gp each), 9 sparkling gems (20gp each), 10 pale green peridots (50gp each), 2 cut spinel gemstones (30gp each) Bolo's cash expenses in the other thread (3sp for a drink and 5gp to Yelob) will come out of his wallet. He has a little spare change tucked away.

Colby will quickly be indebted to the party when his training costs come due. His training will run between 1800 and 6400 GP, assuming it's a standard fee. If I have to go through the college, add another 1000K admission fee.

Tracking Bolo's expenses in this thread was more for my general reference when I update the character sheets (after we finalize all the stuff on the board) before Sunday.

I'll take his silence on any particular restrictions to mean that I won't get in trouble just for using magic in the city. Don't cause property damage or kill anybody and you won't have trouble with the guards. Charming city officials and putting curses on people might cause tension. Otherwise, not really. Don't fly over the walls unless he wants to be shot at with crossbows. If Bolo finishes his adventure in time, Colby will see if he can make an introduction. Bolo's adventures have already happened/will happen in the future/have no bearing on anyone else in the party (yet). Bolo could possibly introduce Colby to Bhatandu at the House of The Green Door, if Colby was interested in paying respects or earning the favor of the local guild. Bolo has never met the Faceless Man, nor is the Faceless Man directly affiliated with the Thieves Guild. He's a feature on the Slums map which isn't really a map, it's Bolo becoming intimately acquainted with the area. Otherwise, he'll check out the Street of Magicians, bringing the scimitar. He'll see what prices he can get. The Street of Magicians is a festive place with magic mouths that hawk mystical wares in foreign languages and illusionary billboards advertising charms, talismans and invocations. In addition to the more official looking stores and shopfronts, there are all manner of hedgewizards, mystics, fakirs and charlatans roaming the area. Colby sees spellcraft advertised; everything from "Diviners who find lost keys", to "Necromancers who perform seance services for the recently bereaved." Most of those keeping shops on the Street of Magicians are competent enough magic-users to cast Comprehend Languages or Tongues, so the communication barrier is not an issue. Those less scrupulous mages he meets offer him anywhere from 100-500GP for the scimitar, but it is obvious that Colby knows the worth of what he possesses and these aren't very serious offers. Others are apologetic, acknowledging that the item is obviously very valuable assuming it is what Colby claims it is, but not something that they could easily re-sell. One kindly magician, Malka the Seer, points out that there isn't a market for such potent magic weapons as nobody keeps enormous sums of gold on hand to buy them with. Would Colby personally rather have a fancy scimitar or 10000 dinars? 10000 dinars seems more eminently useful. Maybe if he had a more practical item that wasn't worth a Sultan's ransom. Hmm, maybe the Sultan would be interested if Colby could find some way to secure an audience that didn't get him beheaded as a foreign assassin... Malka tends to ramble on, like strange stream of consciousness rambling. A couple of the magicians queried want to know if Colby is interested in trade of spells, services, magic items, etc. for the scimitar or if its just cash he wants? One mage, Lokthar the Enchanter, offers Colby a flat 1500 dinars for any enchanted weapon. He won't bring the sabre, but he'll describe it and see what kind of price range he gets. Same deal. He'll chat up the wizards and see if any know of any other routes to training. The college is really the only way, they frown on private instructions. Of course there's always do-it-yourself training, one mage offers in a somewhat derogatory way, glancing out toward the charlatans and hedgemages on the Street of Magicians.
