We should go take over Damned John O'Crewet's manor. It is closer to Devonshire and likely easier to fortify. Now you're talking. Let's talk spells. Finnious, what are you thinking to learn as your new spell when you finish training for 5th level? Colby's inclination is to learn Wall of Fire or Wall of Ice. However if Finn takes Fireball, I might go with Polymorph Self instead, thinking that I don't need another direct damage spell.

Paavo has offered his services to the Sir Eldon. Paavo finds Ser Eldon Graves as busy, if not moreso, than the Lord-Mayor preparing for the arrival of the Baron. The Sherriff of Devonshire, at Sherlane's behest, has enlisted two unlikely deputies in the form of Epicaste and Danaus. Both of whom now speak Common with some fluency and are instructing green recruits in the basics of hand-to-hand combat. They seem fairly content with this role. [/li][li]Investigate ritualistic killings happening around town?
Ser Eldon Graves of course implores Paavo to assist in the investigation of these heinous murders. Five deaths in two weeks, the victims for the most part poor or transient. The latest, however, was a member of a prominent family in town. Ghastly white corpses found drained entirely of blood. The townspeople are afraid to walk the streets at night, etc., etc. So far they have no suspects or witnesses... [/li][li]Maybe have Finn tutor Mary in Feldspar's book.
She only gets the experience if she figures it out for herself. [/li][li]Ask alchemist to identify potions. Offer to sell him a copy of the formula for the water breathing potion. Offer him the gargoyle horns in trade for either identifying potions, making potions or selling other potions and/or spell ink. Offer him phase spider(s). Ask him to make 15-20 new spell inks.
Darokin the Alchemist is always glad to see loyal customers. He'll identify those potions as best he can: 3 vials of rose-colored liquid (healing) chalky white potion (???) a red syrupy potion (cure poison) a vial of pale blue liquid (lethal poison) He'd concoct a sample of the water-breathing potion recipe if you paid for the ingredients (450GP) but he won't it if it isn't proven to work and he won't expend his time & materials to find out. He has a water-breathing potion on sale for 900GP. Gargoyle horn he will purchase for 50GP/per unit. A dead phase spider he would purchase for 150GP. A live one he wouldn't know what to do with... We have previously established that the alchemist can create for you 6 alliquots of ink per week, at a cost of 150GP/per unit. [/li][li]Have Ingrid and Dan cast Remove Curse to see if either the curse from the Pit or the effects of the fountain can be removed.
There is no tangible result from these repeated efforts. [/li][li]Paavo will cast remove disease on anyone looking under the weather.
Is Paavo planning to go to the Church mission to lay hands on the sick or is he planning to squander Ukko's gift on Friedrich's foot fungus? [/li][li]Friedrich and Mary visit Fenhold to assess the situation.
Marcus will go, he is eager to help establish a just and Spartusian system of governance. He will insist on taking a share of the treasure, whatever we have determined that to be... ah yes, here we go: I divided by 10 = (9 full shares + 2 half shares). A full share for each of Trommer, Finnious, Colby, Friedrich, Paavo, Danakes, Bolo, Ingrid and Marcus and half shares for Dan and Mary. So Dan and Mary get 750 gp and everyone else gets 1500 gp. Marcus will take 1000GP of that share, leaving the rest for group costs. Ingrid has few expenses and is not required to tithe. All the wealth of the earth belongs to Moradin anyway. She will donate her full share to the party assuming that they group will fund her basic adventuring necessities. [/li][li]Purchase more pearls.
The local jeweler has recently restocked, realizing the increasing demand: you can purchase 1000GP worth of pearls for 1200GP. Ask around about selling/trading unwanted magic items. Maybe the church will trade for some healing potions. Sherlane has in the past expressed interest in spells and items of a magical nature. Unfortunately he seems really busy at the moment. Finnious knows there is something of an illicit black market for such items. Who is approaching the Church and with what magic items? [/li][li]Ingrid should spend the month reading the book of Wisdom unless Trommer is set on reading it.
Reading a work of this nature takes 48 hours time over 6 days, and immediately thereafter the book disappears. [/li][li]Create scrolls and/or potions.
There are time/costs associated, Colby will have to determine what, if anything, he is creating. [/li][li]Do any experimentation needed for existing or new items to make sure we know how to use them.
Will require specifics. [/li][li]Open quantum box.
Can happen next session. [/li][li]Finish identifying items.
The ivory-tipped wand was polymorphing, the wooden wand was detect secret doors. By my count there are 13 items left to identify on your list, including command words for the two wands. Is Mary Tanner delaying the trip to Fenhold to identify items? If not... Is Finnious forgoing extracurricular activities after his training to identify items? If not... Is Colby putting off creation of scrolls/potions to identify items? Bolo wants to do some experiments with the little white room ring. He wants to know: - How long can things stay in the room without disappearing? Is the time predictable? Is the time cumulative, or does the clock restart each time Bolo pops back into the room for a visit?
- What's the largest object that Bolo can take into the room? Is it just limited by what he can carry? Does it ever work to grab hold of something without actually picking it up?
- If someone else is holding onto Bolo when Bolo puts on the ring, does Bolo disappear into the room? If Bolo is tied to a doorknob with a rope, and he puts on the ring, does he go to the room, and when he gets back from the room, is he still tied to the doorknob?
- Can Bolo carry a living creature such as a chicken or dog into the room? If he leaves a chicken in the room, and then comes back an hour later, is the chicken still alive and well?
- How big is the room? If Bolo stands in a particular location, then puts on the ring, then walks to another location within the room, then takes off the ring, where does he end up relative to the location where he was standing originally?
- Does time pass at the same speed when inside the room? (Bolo can do experiments with pairs of lit candles to determine this.)
To the DM: If I need to construct a detailed series of experiments to test these questions, let me know. - Through experimentation Bolo is confident items can remain in the room for 6-8 hours before they are no longer there. I will need some detailed explanation as to how Bolo will determine if the timer is cumulative or resets, is he planning to be in the white room at any point during the 6-8 hours period?
- Only items that Bolo is physically carrying. No objects larger than himself, nothing that he is simply touching.
- If someone is holding Bolo when he puts on the ring, only Bolo disappears. When Bolo is tied to a rope, tied to a doorknob, only Bolo disappears. The unsupported rope falls to the ground.
- Only the wearer of the ring is transported to the room. No other living creatures.
- It's a 10'x10' room. Bolo's position in the white room does not affect his original position when he removes the ring.
- Bolo is able to determine time passes at the same rate inside the room as outside. Curiously he is unable to get a candle to light while in the white room.
Will the silver sword brooch produce a short sword, if used by a short person? I'm going to say yes because its cool. Bolo wishes to purchase a grappling hook and 100' of fishing line. He already has a 50' rope. He will practice throwing the grappling hook attached to the rope. He will also practice shooting an arrow attached to the fishing line, with the other end of the line attached to the the rope. When you add the grappling hook and fishing line to your charater sheet please subtract 6GP. Consider him practiced with the rope & grapnel. The arrow+fishing line+rope technique is more difficult to master and I'm not entirely sure I understand what the intent is. Bolo likes the tune Colby is whistling. He will mention it to the conductor of the Devonshire whistling club. That's really outside his territory, you're going to want to talk to whoever's running the guild in Threshold. He'll warn you that they're a bunch backstabbers and thieves. Heheheh. [/li][li]Finish training.
19 days will pass. In that time Mary will fail to comprehend the arcane treatise (5 days), Ingrid will finish the tome of understanding and subsequently misplace it, Finnious, Dan and Colby will finish training. On the fourth day the Baron arrives amidst much fanfare, with a regiment of pike-wielding infantry (500), a detachment of archers (200) and a company of mounted knights (60) in shining platemail. Accompanying them is an immense wagon-train and a veritable army of squires, pages, minor courtiers and camp-followers. They set up a tent city outside the walls of Devonshire. The Baron and his retinue, including Ser Kandros and Goodman Arlek, occupy Lord Sherlane's manor. Kaerin, the arm-master, moves your party to the guest wing which has been renovated since your last stay, when Colby punched through a wall. For the better part of two weeks, Lord Sherlane's house becomes a veritable zoo as he indulges the Baron with lavish feasts and parties. The Lord-Mayor takes every opportunity to introduce the Baron to his close and dear friends, the Heroes of Willowsby. No bloodless corpses turn up in that time, though there are reports of some unaccounted-for soldiers whose absence is attributed to desertion. I need to know who is going to Fenhold and on what day, who is identifying items and for how long, etc. Is Bolo going by himself to Cinderham-on-the-Moors? Does he leave immediately? I'll assume time is wasted if I don't hear otherwise.

Colby will identify items before writing scrolls. Once he's done training, he'd like an opportunity to test Wall of Bone and Rissa's Ruby Ray. Likely far from Devonshire, away from prying eyes.

The latest, however, was a member of a prominent family in town. Ghastly white corpses found drained entirely of blood. If the corpses have not been interred he will give them a once over using his Detect Evil. If already interred he will check the graves to make sure they are still there. He will use his Detect Evil in the areas near where the bodies where found. He will ask Bolo to ask his acquaintances if they have heard anything. He will even offer a reward for information. He will rely of Bolo's expertise in these negotiations. Is Paavo planning to go to the Church mission to lay hands on the sick or is he planning to squander Ukko's gift on Friedrich's foot fungus? He will offer his cure diseases and laying on of hands to the Church. Attempting to foster a good relationship there. He and Dan will tithe as well. Marcus will take 1000GP of that share, leaving the rest for group costs. The 1500 gp per share assumed we split everything. I think we were talking about keeping a larger share for the company and giving smaller adventure bonuses. This is still under discussion. The local jeweler has recently restocked, realizing the increasing demand: you can purchase 1000GP worth of pearls for 1200GP. We will purchase these with company funds and let him know that a steady stream of pearls is much appreciated. Who is approaching the Church and with what magic items We will wait until the other items are identified. Then if we could get a list of all magic items we can decide what to approach the church with. Dan will ask around at the Church to see what their position on the Inquisition is. Dan will also gossip about the things he heard from Father Thomas.

Before leaving to attend to more pressing matters, Lord Sherlane tells Colby that they need to have a serious discussion about Colby's career once he has some time. Colby will talk with Lord Sherlane before identifying items or writing scrolls. He won't mention the Necromancy book or the libram of silver magic, but will tell Sherlane the titles of the other books and let Sherlane peruse them if he'd like.

Fin points out (with respect) that the two Wall spells Colby recommends he learns are both 4th level spells...and poor Fin, being only a lowly 5th level MU, can't learn those yet. He's thinking, though, that it would be a pretty good thing to have an additional Dispel Magic in the party, and is considering that. When he's finished with training, Fin will take a day to pay his respects to Stringer Bell and express his interest in the shipment task he'd heard about. If it's still available, he'd like to take a crack at it. He'll also ask Bell if he has any information on the grisly murders happening about town.
Is there a city morgue? He'd like to visit it, if it exists, and examine the bodies of the murder victims. He'll ID himself as a bona fide Hero of Willoughsby and flash a few gold pieces. If this all works out, he'd look for bite marks, ritual fetish markings, vampire claw marks, and perhaps the odd unclaimed Ring of Invisibility or two.
That evening, Fin will nose around in the red light district and see if he can pick up any info on the murders. If he were to be shown the site of one of them, he'd snoop around for clues, perhaps even cast a surreptitious Detect Magic (this will be, of course, at night and if there are other folks around, he's not averse to hiding in shadows or even going Invisible to do so).
Fin is concerned that Katrina is back in town. If he could find evidence of vampirism, he'd be interested in trying to track the neck-biters down to find their coffins. If he'd find evidence leading to something else, like giant ticks, lampreys, Congressmen and other bloodsuckers he'd report that to the party.
He'll then take a day to ID an item of the party's choice.
He's not sure he'd go along to Fenhold just yet. If Stringer Bell's shipment task is imminent, he'd stay in town to work that.

Friedrich will go with Mary to Fenhold. I was under the impression that if Mary fails her roll she does immediately and thus does not spend 5 days only to find out she couldn't understand it. She will stick around for a couple of days though to identify items if needed. Friedrich will wait while she does her work.
Friedrich will ask Danakes and Trommer to accompany him. They could hopefully find some bind wound treatments while traveling as well. I just get the feeling that there will be some trouble along the way and once we get to Fenhold I would think there will be some undesirables to weed out in the surrounding wilderness. Friedrich will be quite grateful for their help and definitely will be happy to return the favor at some point in the future. Anybody else who wants to come is more than welcome to join us.
Friedrich will ask for the party to liquidate 1000GP for the trip. I expect there to be lots of problems and to find things in a state of disrepair.

From this I gather that Friedrich is waiting 5 days for Mary to finish the book, 2 days for her to identify "a couple items", however long for Trommer/Danakes to determine if they are joining him, and an indefinite amount of time for the group to determine treasure distribution and dole him out 1000GP. It's then 6 days journey to Fenhold and 6 days back, considering his movement rate and lack of transportation. That's not counting any time actually spent in Fenhold. If both your characters are still in Fenhold at the start of next session you will need another character to play.

We should see what 3rd and 4th level spells Sherlane is willing to sell/trade with us before Colby and Finn do their research. It would be great to get Fly, Dispel Magic, Fireball*, Invisibility 10' Radius, Minor Globe of Invulnerability, Polymorph Other*, Polymorph Self, Wall of Fire*, Wall of Ice. *Likely on the proscribed Church list. The order of identification doesn't matter too much. There are 8 days between when Finn and Colby finish training. Colby is also going to spend some time writing scrolls. So Finn should be able to get to most of the identifications by himself while Colby is otherwise occupied. I don't know how long Finn was planning to go out of town. Scrolls take 1 day per level of spell being scribed at a cost of 1 spell ink (150 gp) per level. Potions take 1 day for each 100 xp and cost 1 gp for each xp. For example, Invulnerability is worth 350 xp, takes 4 days to make and costs 350 gp. There may be some inflation in these prices. Let's assume Mary and Friedrich left on Day 8 after she spends 2 days identifying and 5 days attempting to read the book. I don't know how long the trip to Fenhold takes. When they return she can help with any remaining identifications or help with the manufacture of spell inks and transcription of spells. Should we tell the alchemist to make three weeks of spell ink (18 levels worth = 2700 gp) during the time that Colby is training? That way there will be no delay when people are ready to write spells and scrolls. Party expenses to date: Cost | Recipient | Reason | 6300 | Colby | Training | 1050 | Finn | Training | 1500 | Party | destruction of necklace | 1600 | Party | destruction of necklace | 1200 | Party | purchase of 10 pearls | 2700 | Party | purchase of 18 aliquots of spell ink | 150 | Paavo | tithing to the Church | 75 | Dan | tithing to the Church |
Total: 14,575 gp

Ok, the last two times Mary failed to read the book, you said that she opened the book up, tried to read it and realized immediately that it made no sense, therefore she did not have to spend five days but closer to five minutes. I am not planning on being in Fenhold at the start of next session. Hopefully Trommer and Danakes will let me know if they are willing to accompany me on the board so we can get on the road ASAP and get back to go find the Rain Bird in time for next session. I do NOT have any desire to remove Friedrich from the campaign (even for one session) unless there is NO way to avoid doing so.
So are we now ruling that Mary takes 5 days when she fails instead of 10 minutes? Either way, the plan is to get Fenhold, spend a day or two there and come back in time to link back up with the party when people are finished with training or doing whatever they are doing.

If you are going there for only a day or two why not wait until the party can go en masse. Also there is no way you could spend 1000 gp in that short of time. You are going to need to first survey things. Then hire a steward to look after the place while you are not there. Then give him a money to carry out your instructions. And hope he doesn't just run off with it. Maybe Sherlane could suggest someone reliable.

Post by Ginger on Feb 17, 2012 11:16:27 GMT -5
To think about the timing, Colby is locked away for 19 days. If Mary needs 5 days to read the book, that still leaves you 14 days to do whatever you want in Fenhold. You can also probably save a lot of time if you spend a few GP here and buy a cart and basic supplies to bring to Fenhold. Travel in a cart will probably make it a 3 or 4 day trip instead of 6.
Finneous, I was suggesting that I would take Wall of Fire if you didn't take Fireball. If you go with Fireball, then I think we'll have the "burning clusters of bad guys" part down already. Paavo is definitely correct that we should wait to trade with Sherlane first.

I wasn't suggesting going to Fenhold anytime soon. But when our adventures take us in that direction we could stop by and check it out. The order might be something like:
-finish work in Devonshire -investigate killings -visit shadow weaver -get on Fairy Road (how?) -look for Vernal House and/or Rain bird -return to Devonshire -go by Damned John O'Crewet's manor -visit Fenhold -continue on to Temple of Death
But if Friedrich feels it is his duty to establish himself in Fenhold immediately then he should do so.

Then I will go ASAP. It is Friedrich's duty to at least visit Fenhold and get a feel for the situation. Hopefully Trommer and Danakes will accompany us. Friedrich will ask Ingrid to join as well. All with the intent of returning by the time training is done so as not to split the party up for the session.

Here are some other things for Bolo to try with the ring if he wants.
-Stand on a chair. put on the ring. does he appear in the room off the ground? someone else moves the chair. when Bolo takes off the ring, is he on the ground, in the air or on the chair? -take an empty chest. step into the chest and close the lid. put on the ring. his assistant moves the chest. he takes off the ring. is he in the chest or where the chest was? -mark the outlines of the chest on the ground. move the chest. step into the outline. put on the ring. place the chest back on the outline. take off the ring. is he now inside the chest? -place a coin in the room. take off the ring. have your assistant put on the ring. does the assistant find the coin? or does the assistant appear in a seemly different room? If so have Bolo put the ring back on and see if his coin is still in his room. -put on the ring while riding a horse or in the back of a cart. does he have any momentum when he appears in the room? take off the ring. where does he appear? on the horse, above the ground where he put the ring on, or on the ground? -hold a gold fish in a bowl of water or a bird in a cage. put on the ring. does everything but the animal transport?

As an experiment to see if the timing resets for different things in the room, you can put a unique item in every hour and see if only the first item disappears or if they all disappear together.

Post by Bolo on Feb 17, 2012 22:24:10 GMT -5
I will need some detailed explanation as to how Bolo will determine if the timer is cumulative or resets First thing in the morning, he will write the numbers 1 through 8 on small slips of paper, put on the ring, place slip 1 on the floor of the room, and immediately take the ring back off. After one hour, he will do the same routine for slip 2, etc. etc. as follows: Hour | Slip # | 0 | 1 | 1 | 2 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 4 | 6 | 5 | 8 | 6 | 11 | 7 | 14 | 8 |
On each visit he'll check whether all the slips of paper are present. If/when any of them are not, he'll stop the experiment. If slips 1 through 7 are all still there when he deposits slip 8, he'll make one final visit at hour 18, collecting any slips that remain and returning with them. It's awesome that the silver sword brooch will make a shortsword. Bolo would like to have that. Unless someone objects, can I assume that he has it with him at least for his visit to Cinderham? The point of the arrow + fishing line + rope technique is to get a rope to someone at a distance. Bolo can shoot an arrow farther and more accurately than he can throw a grappling hook. Fishing line is light enough that it won't impede Bolo's archery too much, and strong enough that someone near where the arrow lands can use it to haul in the rope. At least, that's my theory. Is Bolo going by himself to Cinderham-on-the-Moors? Does he leave immediately? Yes, and yes.

Alternatively you could have a single company account. Shares give you a dividend but there is still the bulk left in the company account. Dividends are determined collectively. The company pays for training. I'd be good with this. Presumably the company would also pay for joint expenses like pearls to identify jointly owned magic items. What else is there that's substantial? Spell ink for MUs? If someone wants cash for personal use, and the company as a whole can't or doesn't want to distribute that large of a dividend all round, I would support the idea of loans from the company account in exchange for the individual's IOU. But loans for PCs only. No way does Marcus get 1000gp in cash. He should be satisfied with the sword of Spartusia for a long while yet, unless we take it away from him.

It's awesome that the silver sword brooch will make a shortsword. Bolo would like to have that. Unless someone objects, can I assume that he has it with him at least for his visit to Cinderham? I am fine with this assuming this in no way designates the brooch as Bolo's. For the better good of the party, I would suggest that this weapon be given to Danakes. I believe he is the only fighter without an magic weapon. And since he primarily uses his bow, the fact that this is not a full time magic weapon is okay. So there are still some magic items to identify but I don't think there are going to be a lot of useful items for the majority of the party. Most of the items are either magic user only (wands, spell books, scrolls), are generally useful for the party (healing, cure poison) or have already been claimed (sword of Sylaire, sword of Spartusia). So I don't think anyone should get there hopes with regards to any magic items. Here is the breakdown as I see it: usable by anyone: - red coral ring: ring of swimming
- silver unicorn ring: dimension door up to 36" once/day
- peacock feather fan: summons the wind; once/day
- silver dreamstone pendant: makes dreams come true. It is very powerful and can be used but once per week. Also it must be recharged after each use and this can potentially be dangerous for the dreamer...
- a silver sword brooch: summons an enchanted sword. Wear it, touch it with an empty hand. Once a day. Release the sword.
- wooden wand. detect secret doors. needs command word.
general party use: - a glowing ring on a chain: spell storing: cure critical wounds, cure serious wounds
- 3 vials of rose-colored liquid: healing
- a red syrupy potion: cure disease
useless: - a lightstone: sheds light in a 60' radius
- a large ornate shield: cursed, missile attractor
- wooden box with dancing bear: plays enchanted music when opened
- a fine saucer & teacup: sings when removed from saucer, knows over 100 songs!
- a vial of pale blue liquid: lethal poison

We should test the duration of our two brooches. Giving it to Danakes sounds good, although it seems cooler to give to a thief character, so you could sneak around with a magically appearing sword.

The elves explained that it can be used once per day and that it stays as long as you hold it. I would hope that it is actually a pretty powerful sword since otherwise its use is pretty limited. Also it would suck to fumble it when you are faced with something that can only be hit by a magical weapon.
