It has got to be easier for Basil to purchase walnuts and extract the oil from them than to have a 1000 gp silver mirror constructed. If we can't purchase walnuts then just use Create Food and Water to make several cubic feet of them. Here is a recipe for making it. Doesn't sound too hard.

So was there a tentative plan after you guys return with the buried loot? Find Viggo and the last horn? Kill Hallakyrie? Raise the terra cotta army? Sail south?

Nope.
I think we were going to bring the scaffold and the gong shield back to Kerava for Toivo to study.
Looking for Viggo seems like a lost cause. He's been gone for months and we have a terrible track record at finding missing persons. (Great Druid)
I vote kill the dragon. We know where it is. It's a guaranteed win for the good guys if we succeed whereas we could spend weeks spinning our wheels searching for the horn or Viggo.
Also guaranteed treasure. No self-respecting, named dragon doesn't have some kind of hoard.
We got three of the four horns anyway. We can make up for the missing fourth horn with panache. Like Bruce Campbell in Army of Darkness.

The problem with finding the Great Druid was a) he was completely shielded from detection and b) he was carried through a gate to any number of alternate planes. We at least know where Viggo is and we can find out more information using Reflecting Pool.

HDM is no god but I wouldn't sell her short. Also we don't even know if she is responsible for Viggo being missing. Maybe Farfarsil has captured him. What kind of creature is Farfarsil?
Are there any rumors or other information about the Koldgarden, Grimgarden or the area around Madsbad? Which Clan rules Madsbad? Any chance they have gone rogue as well? Any known ruins in these areas? Any guardians of the forest like Mickel in Silverthorn that could be helpful? Does Ingvar know why Viggo decided to look in this area?
We recovered the Horn of the North which was given to and buried with Gudbrand Gray-Eyes. We recovered the Horn of the West which was given to Thorvald Gnollhammer, passed on to his son Kristin Elf-Friend and stolen from the elves by the Marten clan. We just recovered the Horn of the South from Black Towen. Do we know to which lieutenant of Hjalmar it is was given and how it was taken by the forces of HDM? Do we know anything about the Horn of the East?

Devils are way worse than demons. We haven't even fought a greater devil yet.
Her Dark Majesty is going to be nasty. What's her real name Voldemort? Vanetar? We saw it on the banner?
We need to start scrying right away- be it with Reflecting Pool or Magic Mirror. We've been all over this Land of Song -- literally down the route the bad guys are taking from Black Towen. It would be nice to see how far south the evil army actually is by now.
The only thing we know of by Madsbad is Farfarsil which is still question marked. I don't even remember what we know about Farfarsil.
I thought Dana told us last week that we've recovered all the horns but the Horn of the North.

Scrying requires a person/creature to focus. So we can focus on Viggo, Kirsi, the witch that charmed Zinc, Hengir or Balro (the devil we failed to kill twice). At least one of them might be with the army. With Clairvoyance you can focus on a known place. So we could look at the mountain passes and everywhere we traveled. Either Morvan or Kazan could choose Clairvoyance as their 6th level spell once we have some ink.

The description of crystal ball in the DMG says "the user must know the subject which is to viewed." Also it talks about "garment in possession" and chance of noticing the scrying. I always interpreted "subject" as being a person. But I could see how it could also be a location or an object. That certainly makes it more powerful. I don't see any reason we couldn't use it to locate the last horn - we should have at least a 20% chance (slightly informed of). So lets skip Clairvoyance. Clairaudience, however, might be nice. First we picture someone, then we listen in to hear what they are talking about.

I have reviewed the post-it notes and determined what Kazan is carrying. There are many items that will be left behind unless someone else wants to carry them or we get horses. (DM: If we leave these items behind can we get a chest or room to lock them in which Ingvar can have guarded?) Items not carried by Kazan: - 3 Besmara's Folios
- 2 Martens' Illusionist Traveling Spellbooks
- 2 Black Towen Gnome Traveling Spellbooks
- Treatise on 7th Circle of Hell
- Aelfbrand (broken)
- 2 Padlock + Key
- bone arrow, devil slaying
- Staff of Striking
- +3 Leather Armor
- Manual Clay Golem
- Books, Ledgers from Grey Dwarves
- 3 gold ring, 200 gp each
- silver necklace, 100 gp
- gold chalice, 2200 gp
- serpent ring with ruby, 450 gp
- gold bracelet, 2300 gp
- gold chain set with rubies, 4000 gp
- white wolf pelt, 5000 gp
- bear cloak, 50 gp
- sable skin, 900 gp
For reference this is currently what Kazan is carrying: number | item | enc/item | total enc | location | 2 | Spear | 40 | 80 | back | 1 | Blanket | 15 | 15 | backpack | 1 | thieves tools | 0 | 0 | backpack | 1 | Beeswax | 1 | 1 | backpack | 1 | Scroll (s) | 25 | 25 | backpack | 1 | Cord (10' feet) | 2 | 2 | backpack | 2 | Martens' Magic user | 30 | 60 | backpack | 1 | elixir of healing | 20 | 20 | backpack | 4 | Black Towen Witch | 30 | 120 | backpack | 5 | Iron Spikes | 2 | 10 | backpack | 5 | Paper and Ink | 1 | 5 | backpack | 26 | pearls, 100 gp | 1 | 26 | bag in backpack | 1 | diamond ring, 1150 gp | 10 | 10 | bag in backpack | 1 | silver pendant, 6500 gp | 5 | 5 | bag in backpack | 1 | opal, 5000 gp | 1 | 1 | bag in backpack | 1 | potion, healing | 20 | 20 | belt | 1 | Pouch, Small | 5 | 5 | belt | 2 | Magical Dagger, +1 | 5 | 10 | belt | 1 | Magical Shield, +2 | 50 | 50 | left arm | 1 | Magical Spear, +2 | 20 | 20 | right hand | 5 | Glowing stone | 5 | 25 | small pouch | 4 | Sack, Small | 5 | 20 | small sack | 4 | Sack, Large | 20 | 80 | small sack | 1 | Waterskin | 50 | 50 | strap across chest | 1 | Sack, Small | 5 | 5 | tied to backpack | 50 | Rope (feet) | 1.5 | 75 | tied to backpack | 1 | Belt | 3 | 3 | worn | 1 | Magical Bracers, AC 5 | 10 | 10 | worn | 1 | Clothes | 0 | 0 | worn | 1 | Boots | 60 | 60 | worn | 1 | Robe | 25 | 25 | worn | 1 | Backpack | 20 | 20 | worn | 1 | Bronze Torc | 20 | 20 | worn | 1 | Ring of Protection, +1 | 5 | 5 | left hand | | Total | | 883 | |
Note that there is some standard equipment which he usually carries but no longer has room in his backpack (as a result of the spell books). - Flask of Oil
- Torch
- holy water
- Bind Wounds Treatments
- Iron Rations (1 week)
- Tinderbox
Does anyone have room for these items? Can we procure more holy water and bind wounds treatments? Can I assume that the clerics will take care of food?

We should probably just give the ledgers to Ingvar. Maybe his logistics people could glean more information than we can. We gave the scaffold and shield to Toivo to hold for us, he can probably keep the other heavy magic items.
On the subject of encumbrance, does the weather still require us to have heavy furs as well as snow shoes? If not, then Zinc can carry the holy water. Between us, the clerics can handle food production. Now that it's starting to warm, Basil's goodberry production will be pretty epic, and we can sustain ourselves with the about to expire berries.

I don't know if Ingvar has any logistics people. I think the plan, such as it is, is to have one giant battle at the gates of Kerara. With 3 active clerics we can use Endure Cold if we are still worried about the temperature and mounts should help with movement. Are we taking Jesper with us on this expedition or is he busy with the defenses? Without Jesper we could have Zinc and Basil transform into horses and Kazan can summon a mount. Kazan can now freely talk to animals so communication wouldn't be a problem. Now that Rennslaer has more hit points than Morvan, Morvan should get the Brooch of Shielding. Morvan can hold onto the wand of paralysis for use from the second rank. Kazan should get the scroll with Fireball at 12th level since Morvan is prohibited from using the spell. Thinking ahead, Kazan has a scroll of teleport. In case we get back and the city is already surrounded he can use that to get the horn (once we recover it) to Ingvar. Just in case he will spend time studying his room so as to be "very familiar" with it. BTW, I checked and found that the crowberry has edible fruit that remains through the winter and is found in subarctic to temperate regions. Basil could use these for his goodberries.

Of those items listed, Rensslaer is carrying a week of iron rations, 3 flasks of oil and Kazan's tinderbox. He still has 100GP WGT. left in his backpack and whatever capacity a large sack holds. And after that he can carry another 2000GP WGT. before being encumbered.
Last time Hjarlmar defeated Her Dark Majesty on the frozen fjords of Battle Bay. Shouldn't we be fighting Her there?

And after that he can carry another 2000GP WGT. before being encumbered. The official numbers are: Small Pouch/Purse Volume: 1/4 cu. ft., G.P. Equiv: 25gp Large Pouch: 1/2 cu ft., 50gp Small sack/tied shirt: 1 cu ft., 100gp Backpack: 3 cu. ft, 300 gp Large sack: 4 cu. ft., 400gp The large sack and small sack can be found on p. 225 of the DMG. The others are found in the insert in the original "goldenrod" character sheets. Reading the description of the two adventurers on p. 225 of the DMG, I could not see how Kazan could effectively carry anymore stuff and have his hands free even though he has 2000+ GP encumbrance remaining. If we discover any treasure he would have to place it in a sack and either carry it over his back or hang it off his backpack or belt. I don't know if you can hang a large sack on yourself. I think he will have an extra large backpack constructed. At 6'6" he can certainly carry a larger backpack than a halfling can even though there is no mechanic in the game. Is there a volume limit to what you can carry on your back without being encumbered? Kazan is not so far from 9th level at which point he can have a Leomund's Secret Chest created.

The number of Northmen that can fluently read is likely pretty small.
I think that your carrying capacity is more limited by the number of sacks or bags you have than how you can carry them. I've envisioned you all festooned with bags and sacks tied to your belt, backpack, bandolier, or whatever. The 'bag in each hand' model described by the DMG really breaks down with the massive encumbrance allowance an exceptional strength gives you, so I've been generally ignoring it.
I think the bigger issue becomes what is readily available to you and what is not. An item in a backpack or belt pouch is readily available, an item in a sack is not.
Along the lines of larger or smaller backpacks, since we aren't really controlling for the number of sacks you can carry, I think I'd prefer to keep the size of a backpack a constant. This reinforces the notion of a limited number of available items (those that fit in the backpack).

Fine with me. I'll have to go back and rejigger what is carried where.
The other advantage of having things in your backpack is that they save better than if they were in a sack. Are pouches considered leather or cloth?

In preparation for learning Polymorph Self I am coming up with a list of creatures we have encountered. I am ignoring undead and devils as inappropriate for Kazan. Also I have left out the creatures from the oriental adventure since I don't know what they are.
Here is the list so far: giant ant, badger, bugbear, birds, bat, bear, giant bee, buckawn, cockatrice, cat, giant centipede, crow, gore crow, dog, duergar, dragon, dwarf, elf, fish, giant, gray ooze, gnoll, griffon, goblin, halfling, hobgoblin, horse, giant hyena, hawk, fire lizard, kech, marten, mephit, ogre, quaggoth, rat, raven, squirrel, giant salmon, seal, stirge, troll, giant weasel, wolverine, white pudding, wolf.
Can you think of anything else? What we are really missing are creatures that can fly and have the ability to speak, i.e. cast spells. For example, sprite, sylph, pixie, gargoyle. Before we leave I want to see if Toivo can show me additional creatures.

Basil is training for like 20 days.
Rensslaer and Zinc have swapped falchion for flail.
What's next?
Halakire???
Zinc can divine for the parts of the gewgaw we're supposed to fetch for Toivo to activate the terracotta army.
And we should ask Yngvar for henchmen. We turned Jespers from zero (xp) to hero (18,000xp) in a couple weeks.

NPCs, hirelings or henchmen would be great. Given that they're about to march to war, and from Yngvar's perspective Alfred is already a Northman on loan, we probably won't get anyone. But if he has a thief or someone who wouldn't necessarily be useful in the battle, that would be swell.
And for the record, Jespers started at level 3, so we just turned him from veteran (or whatever) to hero in a few weeks.
Alfred will need several days to learn dagger so he can use Teodor's weapon. We should also spend some time searching for berries, given that Basil can quickly become a goodberry machine now that it's thawing.
