To sum up: Cedrus is better, Al isn't. We've got Icar and Markessa as unconscious captives. Everyone is pretty beaten up.
More specifically: Otto and Raven ran off in fear, straight into a pit. My ring of feather fall protected me, but Otto fell on 5 spikes and went unconscious. I bound your wounds and we found the rest of the party without incident. Otto was extremely beat up, so he went to get Diego and bring back the horses.
We found bottles with braille-type lables in Icar's box, one of which unpetrified Cedrus (exactly as I predicted). Under Icar's bed was a trap door, which led into Markessa's lab. She got offf a lightning bolt before Cedrus silenced her, taking out several of the fighters. The other fighters attacked her, keeping her inside the silent area. Raven tried to have an archery battle with a group of goblin archers and got shot into unconsciousness. After Dell brought him back up by pouring an unidentified potion into his mouth, Raven closed with Markessa and his arrows, Dell's dagger, and Cash's two-handed sword all connected in the same round, knocking her into unconsciousness, bur not killing her. There were also these two huge owl-bears. Raven took out one and our snake constricted the other.

Additionally, Pavel, who was listening at the large doors down the hall, says he heard goblin voices beyond them and you actually took a goblin prisoner, after he realized his choices were to run past Cash's big sword or Raven sharp arrows.

I assume we still haven't recovered Melba. She wasn't one of the slaves we freed last week?
Glad to hear we have Cedrus back.
Are we playing next weekend? I don't have a soccer game so I should be around.

Yes I, your leader, really pulled it out this time. As usual, I saved the day. A day-saver is what I am. But I couldn't have done it without my loyal staff. Also, this battle is the first time the snake has made an appearance, which is pretty cool.
Other amusing things... Winthrop was almost poisoned by a trap on the ladder. Raven got to be the potion guinea pig - luckily it was a potion of healing. Dell got critically hit. We encountered more werewolves... um... yeah, life is good.
Markessa is pretty kickass, let me tell you. She was surrounded by fighters, and they couldn't hit her at all. She can't get around them, so she starts carving them up with her magical shortsword. I think we should ask her to join the company.
There's no game next week, alas.

Raven got to be the potion guinea pig - luckily it was a potion of healing. I'd totally forgotten about that. I was unconscious, and Dell poured a potion in my mouth labled "Use in emergencies!" or something like that. Fortunately, it was a potion of greater healing (3d8+3). I also remembered that when I shot Markessa for 30 pts of damage, she had protection from normal missiles. That's why she's unconscious, and not a pile of goo.

That comes out of your share of the magic items, you know. The stone to flesh comes out of Winthrop's share. Next time I'll use that potion you have that's labelled "greater healing" and see what it does. And speaking of dividing the items... we need a policy on magic items for the NPC's. The current policy is "they get nothing." That just barely works with Ironhand, Cash, and the Saltmarsh crew. Diego and Pavel are going to want an even cut, though. Bear in mind - we're not quite halfway through this series, and we're getting beaten down pretty regularly. If the NPC's start failing morale checks...

I think that we have reached the point where some of the magical items we get are dispensible. If Otto gets the +2 longsword, Raven picks up Icar's sword or the Executioner's sword and Dell uses Markessa's short sword, we should be able to give up the +1 dagger and +1 sword set, as well as whichever is worse of Icar's sword or the Executioner's sword.
Additionally, will the soldiers want magical items? They might get confiscated or something when they get back to the barracks. Maybe Tom will think it's best for us to give money to Chumley for the Saltmarsh guys to keep.

I think we should limit the soldiers to magic weapons and armor. For the most part I don't think any of them are in a position to use anything more sophisticated. Maybe the split should be
-a full share of valuables (coins/gems/jewelry) for the company members -a full share of valuables for diego and pavel -a full share of valuables for senior soldiers (Ironhand, Tom, Ben) -a half share of valuables for junior soldiers -magic weapons and armor are distributed in seniority to the person who can use it most effectively with them relinquishing items of lesser value to the next person. -other magic items are distributed between company members, diego, pavel and senior soldiers keeping mind who can use an item. there will of course be some discussion on this point. -items that cannot be used will be sold for cash at a later date and split as above. -individuals who are killed will have their full share of valuables sent to next of kin. all magic items will be forfeit to the party for distribution.

What kind of deal did we make with Pavel and Diego when they came with us? I think we have to treat them as company members, since they're tough enough to warrant it.

I think that any distinction between the soldiers might have to be dropped. It's quite likely that all of them will be at level 4. I think that Ironhand might be at 5, but it's unlikely. It sucks for him, but all of his underlings are now just as good as he is.

They certainly haven't acted much like a military group with a definite hierarchy. Know one seems to give orders or follow them. I was just making the distinction because that was how they were listed to us. I am fine giving everyone a full share of valuables but I would keep the general seniority ranking for the distribution of magical items. If nothing else the company is taking the lead in decision making and combat situations.

I agree that their officers have been ordered to listen to us, so there isn't much leadership on their part. I'm not sure how things will balance out once we're done, since I doubt that a bunch of level 4 soldiers are going to like going back to Saltmarsh. Do we want to ask any of them to stay on with us? Any of the melee specialists will be worthwhile.

I think we should keep them along. Al is going to be of much help for a while if we get him back on his feet. They are also getting tough enough to stand up front a bit more. At least when we're not in 5 foot corridors.
As a side note Dell and I will (if we haven't don so already) collect a as much of the cloaker hide as possible for our spell books.

The Saltmarsh men probably have a term a service that they need to fulfill before they can join the company. Lord Morgan may release them early if we bring back Melba. Until we find her of course we want them along.
