The first mission with Dell as pretend leader of the group was a... success? As suspected, the mounds were made by bugs. Really big bugs. Eight foot bugs that spit acid on things. Why do they spit acid? Probably because I was making "Aliens" jokes. Or maybe because Gary Gygax hates it when people have things, so he created a bunch of retarded creatures that will spit acid or fire or breast milk on you and force all your items to save or be destroyed.
So, to sum up the adventure:
We go into a hole, and come out another hole. We repeat this until the party finally follows Dell's suggestion to track the militia men and see what happened to them. We track them to where they all died, then Liato's wolf tracks them by scent to the center of their lair.
Dell sends the sheep in first (don't ask) and then we start fighting. As usual, Liato gets hit first and worst. As usual, after we kill one thing, another comes up from behind to get us. As usual, Winthrop nearly kills party members with a fireball. Unusual things - the front line fighter takes no hits from the enemy, Dell stays visible.
Liato got blasted by two huge gouts of acid, melting both his magical clasp and the magical pearl of wisdom. After this, Winthrop fireballs the creatures, which causes a cave-in in the poorly dug tunnel. The entire party is covered. Liato's dog is buried and gets crushed by the weight of the soil - so at least it got a decent burial.
We dig ourselves out, and decide to call it a day. We go back the next day (well, the druid really doesn't want to go, so he goes off and does scrying for a while) and find that we had killed them all the first day. We collect the treasure that was around their lair, and Liato steals some magical boots from one of the corpses.
(How do I know they're magical boots? Well, Liato casts a spell, looks around at all the items, stares at Dell for like a minute with his mouth gaping, and then says something like "boy, these boots are really hurting my feet. I think I'd rather wear the boots that are on this three month old rotting corpse. But since he lost two of his magical items (out of a total of two) Dell (as the party leader) is willing to let him have the boots as his share instead of the cash. He'll even identify them for him, no charge. Because Dell is a caring and considerate leader. Dell saved Liato's life, you know. Didn't seem to improve his attitude, but he's very distraught over his dog, or wolf, or whatever.
Next morning we pull out all the corpses (the militia, plus three folks that we can only assume are slavers, plus the bodies of all the dead bugs. And then we head back to the city of Loftwick, after having an enjoyable time on our mission, making a little bit of spare cash, and having very little difficulty killing off the bad guys - except for Liato's melting jewelry.
