We regrouped and bound the wounds of our gnollish "allies." (which would turn out to be a total waste of bind wounds treatments) Otto, over my objections, decided we would head to the stables. The gnolls directed us left out the door, back the way we came, but then after a minute made us turn around and go the other way. This week we were sort of disorganized. And by "sort of" I mean "a lot."
After a long passage with several overpasses/underpasses we were attacked from above by a single giant spider. Raven feathered it but good. Reaching a 60' stretch of corridor, that U'd similar to where we first came through the webgate, we came upon a door. It was established that the door was an actual door and not a dried-up husk door and that the gnolls led dark elves here but never entered themselves. Winthrop kicked the door in while people argued about whether or not to kick the door in. Otto, Winthrop, Raven, Al and Adrienne, mounted on the Bone Beast of War; entered the room, which was actually a corridor leading to a four way intersection.
The gnolls refused to go in which caused a bit of a log-jam. At this point nobody else went through the door. For some reason Team Otto decided not to wait for the rest of the party, took a left and disappeared around the corner.
At the end of the passage was a shaft leading up, in which sat an umber hulk. Otto and Adrienne attacked, Al and Winthrop decided not to do anything. Raven didn't have a good shot? It hypnotized Otto and dragged him up the shaft. We lost initiative and Otto was gone. Winthrop turned into a drider and Al climbed aboard. Raven drank the rest of his potion of polymorphing and transformed as well. I think we lost initiatve again and they chased after the umber hulk. Adrienne rode back on the Beast of War and told us that Otto was gone!
Florin ran in immediately, but went the wrong way. Antonus entered as well, but more cautiously. Jasper ran in and went after Florin, at Antonus' urging. Both Florin and Jasper fell 100' and went unconscious.
The gnolls still refused to go into the room, so Dell ordered the Beast of Woe to attack them. With nobody left in the front of the party they just ran. Dell and the Beast of Woe pursued and killed a couple more. Then he let them get away.
Winthrop, Raven and Al caught up to the umber hulk with Otto and killed it before it could eat Otto. Though Al was hypnotized as well. Another umber hulk entered the room, looked at the driders and went back the way it came. Winthrop decided this was the perfect time to collect parts. Raven chased after the umber hulk following it down another shaft. As he couldn't use a longbow in such close quarters, he dropped bodily onto the creature (as a drider) and they both plummeted 90'. It took the bulk of the damage and he finished it with his bastard sword.
Meanwhile- Pfiffwin and Antonus pooled their limited resources, trying to figure out how to get down the 100' drop to the bodies of Jasper and Florin. Pfiffwin noticed a large shadow prowling around down there, and being very literal minded, called for clerical assistance. Cedrus ran up but could do nothing. Turned out it was an umber hulk. Pfiffwin cast an awesome illusion of a huge boulder falling down the shaft, landing on the bodies. But the umber hulk ignored it and proceeded to drag Jasper away into the darkness. (we rolled evens or odds, twice- Jasper both times) A brave Pfiffwin then cast Wraithform while Antonus argued with Clift about rope. Pfiffwin descended the 100' in the next round while Clift continued to be evasive about how much rope he had. After considerable threat of polymorphing, Clift relinquished 50' of rope which Antonus enlarged to 90' of rope and attached to the stone horse.
Pfiffwin follows the umber hulk down another 50' shaft, where he finds it eating Jasper. Jasper dies. Antonus, not trusting Clift at all, insists that Clift go down the rope first. Clift refuses and there is more argument. Adler, suddenly realizing that he can cast both Feather Fall and Levitate, clambers down in platemail. Another round of arguing and Antonus climbs down, as does Clift. Adler heads off down the passage to find Pfiffwin.
When Antonus goes to bind wounds on Florin, Clift snatches the only lightstone and tries to run off. When told to return the stone, Clift puts it in his mouth, plunging the room into darkness. This turns out to be the last straw for Antonus, who pulls out the Wand of Paralyzation and attempts to zap him. Normally Clift's antics would be met with good-humored annoyance, but the Abyss is very stressful and that whole ordeal with the rope...
During all this another umber hulk hypnotizes and drags off Samantha. Grizela chases after and is hypnotized as well. Adrienne, the Bone Beast of War, Hugh, Cedrus and Ned Thinvoice wander off in that direction, eventually catching up to and slaying the creature before it can eat Samantha.
Pfiffwin single-handedly defeats the other umber hulk with a clever combination of chromatic orb, illusionary archers and a backstab. Adler levitates Jasper's corpse back up the shaft and the party regroups. A thorough search of the umber hulks' lairs reveals a ton of gold and platinum, scrolls and assorted interesting, possibly, magical items. Encumberance becomes a factor because of Jasper's death- it is found that Tenser's Floating Disc is not contained in any of our traveling spellbooks. It is also found that a Mount spell summons 4d10 daemonic larvae... All the demon polearms, swords and throwing weapons are discarded. As are a ton of gold coins and the banners, despite my loud protestations.
Finally we leave the room and head down the walkway. After a few more overpasses/underpasses we spot what resembles Winthrop (in his drider form) on an underpass below us. Antonus yelled down, "Hey Winthrop"- the drider looked back, confused, and then fireballed the party. I am still not entirely convinced that it wasn't Winthrop.
Mistakes were made. I highlighted them in bold.
