I'll start by summing up how things ended. Good news: Cedrus can now memorize all new spells without resting for the night. None of the bugbears and ogres escaped.
Bad news: That moveable stinking cloud was actually some sort of demon. Cedrus realized it and swung at it with his hammer. That caused it to take corporeal form, and it hit him with its 6 tentacles for 25 points of damage. That brought him to -13 HP. It only had 5 HD, so was killed in one round by Dell's magic missile, Foebiter and Jasper's nifty new halberd. A few minutes after the combat, we heard the gong sound again, exactly one hour after the earlier time. Mungo said that it comes from the temple where the orks were excavating, so we've deduced that they've gated in another one of those demons.
Some (we assume all) giants escaped through the secret passage we explored earlier. We saw bloody footprints leading from those stairs to the outside. We looked to see how they did it and were greeted by a manticore. We fled and closed the door behind us. The manticore didn't pursue.
I think the plan right now is to wait for 30 minutes for the newly resurrected Cedrus to memorize and cast some cure spells. We want to attack the temple before whoever is summoning those demons brings in a third.

After two rounds of possibly the worst rolling ever seen on both sides, Otto suffered grievous harm and died. Fortunately, no one decided to pull the ring from his hand and now Otto lives. While the dwarves generally were worthless, running from the sounds they heard above ground, but not joining in fight below ground, Mungo is quite resilient. "Mungo wants some armor." Oaklock also pitched in, though he was quickly overcome by the demon cloud. The Company collects an assortment of giant sized coinage (about 350 GP) and a singularly large star sapphire off of the dead bugbears and ogres.

Oh, yeah, I was totally about to mention that Otto had died. It must have just slipped my mind. It's not like we were going to just pretend it never happened. Nope.

Today was an exciting day here, too. I was sitting in a coffee shop, and right next door, there was some sort of explosion; apparently, somebody blew himself up in the men's room. I didn't hear a thing, and it was about a half hour before they evacuated us. The news reports were full of wild speculation, but the actual scene itself was completely calm and orderly. I think there must be sedatives in the water here; everyone is always calm and polite.
Playing D&D with you guys is one of the very few things I miss about DC. It's really great to read along and see how the game is progressing. I'm kind of shocked, however, at how careless you are with Cedrus! Isn't this the second time you've managed to get him killed?? Sheesh. Well, other than detail, he seems to be kicking ass. What are his stats now?
Ciao.

Is he out until Cedrus can memorize? Or at least several hours until the regeneration has time to work? He can always hang out with the dwarves and watch over the gold. He is getting a little tired of melee combat with a dozen oppenents all trying to grapple him. Give him a giant or two any day. He will leave the mass assaults to the magic users and the bow specialists.

He was surrounded by 6 ogres for two or three rounds and went down to -12 when they got a few lucky hits in the last round. We've pushed the tables to barricade the three corridors leading into the room. During that time, Otto went up to -9.

We do have options if we want to make our assault sooner rather than later. We have the restoration potions that could bring Otto (or anyone else) back to full health. While we would prefer to use these items to raise people from the dead, it may be worthwhile to use it on someone to bring them back to full health. Like if, say, a demon were to show up. Dell favors an assault sooner rather than later.
Regarding other issues... I still can't express enough how saddened I am that you let a lousy spike-tailed cat scare you away from all the treasure. Why do you think Dell was collecting all the valuables in the first place? All you had to do was pick up a box. You even had Jasper there - his whole existence is centered around the carrying of goods and doing what he's told.

Actually we haven't told Dell about the treasure chests in the lower level. We figured that would just distract him. We were only interested in finding another way to attack the giants.
Clearly we made some tactical errors in spending the time to collect treasure above and letting the giants have free reign below. Just because we had killed waves of bugbears, ogres and giants was no reason to assume there still weren't more waiting for us. So I think retreat isn't a good option. We should take whoever is still able and find whatever else is still down here.
Note we should probably assume some kind of giant shaman is down here who is able to activate the gate.

We should take whoever is still able and find whatever else is still down here. Easy for the guy at -9 to say. So who do we have that's still healthy enough to go down to the temple and fight a demon, a shaman, and perhaps some remaining guards? Dell's willing to go, but he needs plenty of meat shields. And of course, if things go poorly he can always turn invisible and run away.

Hugh is 7/24 Winthrop is 14/45 with 1 lightning bolt and two magic missiles (after 30 minutes studying)
If we go in 45 minutes Cedrus can dole out three cure lights.
It seems that the Company might want to invest in more healing potions. Spned money to make money or at least live. It would seem cheaper than losing Contitution points.

Al's giant strength will only last a little bit longer, so if we do anything, we should do it soon.

I think we're all agreed that we want to get to that gong before it goes off again. I think that if we wait for 30 minutes, Al's giant strength will still be up and Winthrop and Cedrus will be able to memorize a spell or two.

Cedrus is 7th level, approaching 8th. He'll likely gain 8th by the end of this adventure. He's lost his ring of shocking grasp/contrariness, which makes him grumpy. He's accumulated the rod of resurrection and another ring, but no other high-value items (the price of being an NPC I guess). Since Mongo seems to fight with a hammer, there's even the suggestion that Cedrus loan his out! Hope things are going well with you both in Toronto!

Al's giant strength will only last a little bit longer, so if we do anything, we should do it soon. It has been 24 minutes since Al drank the potion. Potions, on average, last about 1 hour. Beyond the Waters from the Knot, the NPCs have 2 healing and one extra-healing potion. Mongo and Oaklock are willing to fight, especially if they can get some armor.

So it sounds like we leave Cedrus to study. See if any of Otto's armor fits Mongo or find . Mongo should be able to use Otto's sword while Otto rests up. Since Hugh is not in great shape for fighting he would be willing to "lend" his +2 chain and +1 shield to Mongo or Oaklock for this battle if nothing else is found. Then amble off to stop the Gong Show before the strength potion wears off.

The +3/+3 Mungo gets for double specialization with a hammer vastly outweighs the bonuses due to a magical sword he's not proficient with. Maybe the dwarves could hastily cut up the giant-sized chainmail we got off that body to fit Mongo or Oaklock. It probably wouldn't fit well enough to give the full AC bonus of chainmail, but it's better than nothing.

I would think giving Otto a water of life would be better than having Mungo or Oaklock. He does +15 damage on giants. Now that we have the rod of resurrection we may want to use the water of life more for heavily damaged but not dead cases. Alternatively Otto would be willing to compensate someone for their potion.

Cedrus, Hugh, the wimpy 6 dwarves, Oaklock and Otto will stay behind and guard our loot.
Mongo will take Hugh's armor and Cedrus's Hammer. Dell will take Otto's sword and scalpel. Then we'll all go assault the temple and the demon.
It should be easy enough, now that we know what we're dealing with. After we deal with whoever's in there we just have some manticores to deal with and we can all get some sleep.

If anyone going uses a shield (Adrienne?) they can take the +2 shield. Also the ring of fire resistance in case the demon can burn things. I will need a long sword and shield in case the giants try to take the loot. So don't take everything or leave lesser versions. Also in case we need to come save you guys we will need weapons that can actually hit demons.

If the giants were going to launch a counterattack, they would have come around the back of us while we were attacking their servants and the demon. They won't be back soon. As far as needing to save us... we'll be done and back before you can say "what happened, and where is Dell with all my belongings?"

Some of the giants might have decided not to brave the manticores. Regardless if we hear two more gongs then we know you guys need help and we'll send the rescue team. By then Cedrus will have had 1.5 hours to memorize and Otto would be conscious.
