Otto has become estranged with the Elders of Farvale. Feeling that they are crazy old men that are more worried about keeping Farvale isolated from the rest of the world rather than actually confronting the troubles around them, Otto decides that the Company of the Blue Sun is the only place he can turn for aid. And so he provides some background on Farvale which seems highly relevant given the pronouncement of Myrick.
Farvale was visited several hundred years ago by a seeress of Istus, the Goddess of Fate. There she pronounced a prophecy of death and destruction. She stated that one day a great darkness would open up in the mountains, men would be crushed to pulp by an unstoppable juggernaut, and goliaths would stride the land. The only hope for their families would be eternal vigilance. She then dropped to the ground, dead.
Of course, over several hundred years the exact words of the prophecy had become garbled, and it was no longer clear whether there was a geographic location to watch, what the timing of the events might be, or if there was more detail to the prophecy.
When Otto returned to Farvale he was informed of the arrival of a second seeress. She warned the town of a dark globe of pain entangling the world and the rise of nightwalkers in the mountains and hills. She also claimed that the route to salvation was under the backbone of the world, found in the light of the ground where the sky and earth become one.
The Elders had heard reports from Loftwick of a great opening in the southwest of the Yeomanry, where a giant creature had been defeated and a vast tunnel found beyond it. They have also heard that adventurers have braved the tunnel and that it heads under the Hellfurnaces to an unknown destination. The Elders sent a group of man (to which Otto was not selected) to investigate this tunnel. No word has been heard back from them.
While in Farvale Otto was responsible for patrolling the Jotens. One day he discovered the remains of a battle between giants and orcs. The giants had been killed by possibly magical fire but not before slaying many of the orcs. On one of the dead giants he found a leather script which had a map on the back. The map seemed to lead deep into the Jotens and the script spoke of respect, a god of the dead and something about a Mountain King. It was hard to make much of it since no one was fluent in the giantish language.
It appears that the third daughter of Lydia (another goddess of fate) is another seeress that will hopefully provide Farvale with more useful insight into the impending doom. Something that will be valuable in stopping the Nerullites. The Hole where the minions are supposed to meet is clearly the tunnel in the southwest of the Yeomanry.
