A small band of novice adventurers has taken passage on the ship Mary Ann, seeking fame and fortune in the New World. This huge continent, a month’s sail to the west across the great ocean, was discovered only a few decades ago, but already fortunes have been made and lost from its diamond mines, furs, timber, and intrigue. Tales abound of wild magic and mysterious cults among the natives, strange creatures in the vast ancient forests, and golden temples deep in the interior. Most of the New World has yet to be explored, but near the coast and along the major navigable rivers, mining settlements have developed into towns, and plantations have been established on land cleared by logging. The Mary Ann’s first port of call will be Segurança, a bustling port at the mouth of the Castanho River.

Fun! I'm leaning towards a Wizard or a Rogue.

Should we actually roll the new character, or use the default stat distribution from the book?

Should we actually roll the new character, or use the default stat distribution from the book? Whichever you prefer is fine. I rolled it 4d6, drop the lowest. Original Roll: 4d6x6s1 Results: 8 15 9 12 12 13 BBCode: My Roll1/2 Elf Ability Score Increase: Your Charisma score increases by 2, and two other Ability Scores of your choice increase by 1. Taking them in order: Strength: 8 Dexterity: 15 + 1 = 16 Constitution: 9 + 1 = 10 Wisdom: 12 Intelligence: 12 Charisma: 13 +2 = 15 (Bard)

Depending on whatever class everyone picks, I'll choose combat/healing spells accordingly.

I am thinking of trying a Ranger. Could be useful in the New World.

As a ranger I need to choose a favored enemy and favored terrain. It seems natural that a ranger traveling to a new world would have done so because rumors/knowledge of what he would likely encounter there would match his training. So any guidance along those lines would be helpful.

As a ranger I need to choose a favored enemy and favored terrain. It seems natural that a ranger traveling to a new world would have done so because rumors/knowledge of what he would likely encounter there would match his training. So any guidance along those lines would be helpful. It's a big continent. The area you are headed for is mostly covered with forest, except where it has been cleared by logging. There are some big rivers. Inland there are mountains, but those parts are not well explored, so you don't know much about them. The same goes for other sections of the continent: there may be deserts or prairies or glaciers, but if so, you know nothing of those areas. You know there are indigenous human tribes, some of them friendly, some of them not. You have heard that the forests are full of wild beasts, some of them magical. You have heard stories about death cults, humanoid races in the mountains, one-eyed giants, huge carnivorous birds, and many other things. Some of these stories may be true.

I am thinking of using a sorcerer. If you want me to change I will but I would like to try out the rules a bit.

A bard, a rogue, a sorcerer and a ranger. Looks like all finesse and no brute force. Of course if Lee wants to play a cleric of a war god... Hmm, that doesn't really work either. Maybe we could hire on to be guards for a merchant caravan until we get a little more experience.

Maybe we could hire on to be guards for a merchant caravan until we get a little more experience. We should have a very high damage output and a wide array of spells. Hit points and armor class might be a little low, but healing mechanics are generous in 5e assuming we survive the fight. Adding a barbarian or paladin would be pretty cool.

As a ranger I get either scale mail or leather armor. Can I take the scale mail, sell it for half price and purchase leather armor and shield with 5 gp to spare?

He used to have a lute. Sadly he had to sell it to afford the voyage.
