With the wizard Slowed and Silenced, our heroes began to take control of the battle. The mercenaries continued to hack away at the trolls, keeping them down, and Trommer used what oil he had to start a pyre.
Finnious warded himself against spells with a Mage Shield.
Shrugging off a poisoned arrow, Ingrid blasted the medusa and its stone-handler with another massive bolt of lightning from the diamond mace but not before being transfixed by its gaze and turned to solid stone!
There was a pause as everyone lamented the loss of Ingrid... and the diamond-mace of 12d6 lightning bolts.
Dan finished chanting the Lesser Orison of Healing, reviving Furio, Murkey, Azhbar and bolstering the rest of his companions.
Azhbar fired his crossbow from the deck, dropping the badly-scorched troll threatening Dan. Lightning gathered around the storm giant as he rose to his feet.
In the ship's cabin, Jamalla the Wise, Holy of Holies, Mother of the Masses, Benefactress of the Poor, and Mitra's handmaiden appeared before Nordel, the wearer of the Girding of Mitra. Being most wise, she layed on her healing hands and then began ministering to the downed Youssef.
Trommer hurled the red-alloyed mace, caving in the hideous face of the medusa and avenging poor Ingrid. Friedrich launched his axe of throwing a couple times for good measure. The stone-handler tugged futilely at the leash before plodding into battle, dragging the corpse of the medusa with it. With heavy stone fists it began battering dervish mercenaries to the ground. Paavo moved to intercept, trusting Friedrich had his back but the dwarf had occupied himself with burning the trolls.
Grimstone and Silverhoof tossed another troll on the pyre but the wet green troll-flesh didn't burn particularly well and neither of them had any more oil.
Finnious threw lightning at the evil wizard which splashed colorfully off a Mage Shield to no real effect.
Nordel stepped out onto the deck of the ship as well, leaving Jamalla to heal Youssef. When his arrows splintered uselessly on the stone man he began searching for new targets.
Slowly descending from the area of magical Silence, the wizard began shouting for more beasts to attack.
Raised voices from the manor house called for reinforcements and a pair of vicious owlbears came squawking through the gate, rending a hapless dervish mercenary in their path. Nordel took aim and pincushioned an owlbear. Trommer moved in slowly on the the creature, allowing it time to shred another dervish, before he dispatched it.
Mary and Colby, in gargoyle-form, made their way from the hold of the Earthship. Taking to the air, Colby surveyed the battlefield.
Haidar, woken much invigorated and bouyed by his recent experiences, climbed up from the ship's hold. Seeing the troll on board, he doused it in oil and lit it on the deck of the Earthship, trusting the ship's magicks to protect it from mundane fire.
Paavo engaged the stone man, avoiding the worst of its blows and hacking large chunks from the thing with the Holy Avenger. With his enhanced magical strength he made short work of it.
Mary cast a Stinking Cloud on the gate to the manor, effectively plugging the entry and sickening an owlbear.
Furio hurled a bolt of lightning and Colby followed suit, the evil wizard's shield exploding in a shower of blazing sparks. But before Colby could hit him with a barrage of magic missiles he vanished into thin air.
Consternation ensued from the manor courtyard, the fighting men therein loudly proclaiming their dismay while referring to one another by proper name. Scarvonnii the Dark, Han Fiilo and Gorstead the Grim were identified thusly.
Haidar began handing out flasks of oil, organizing a troll-burning effort.
Finnious circled the ship, tossing a fireball through the gate of the manor house. Screams followed.
Murkey, looking much healthier, launched himself into the air, looking for threats.
As the men and carnivorous apes began retreating into the manor house, Colby battered them with an Ice Storm.
With one arm Furio boosted himself over the manor house wall, spiking a heavy boulder down on one of the retreating warriors with bone-jarring force.
The trolls burned, Friedrich and Haidar leading the dervishes in the effort, and the battle seemed well in hand.
A bald man in dark robes suddenly appeared from thin air, seemingly late to the party. A couple spells rolled off him with no effect. Trommer advanced on him (judiciously avoiding the invisible Stinking Cloud), shrugging off a crippling wave of fear which sent two dervishes running screaming into the night. The bald man seemed a lot less confident when Trommer started carving into him with the bastard sword of disruption. He struck Trommer once, disdainfully, with a powerful open-hand blow before vanishing as suddenly as he had arrived.
The trolls, mostly collected in a big pile, continued to burn.
Jamalla the Wise rendered her last healing magic before departing to wherever it is Lions of Mitra go. With Haddiq dead and Ingrid turned to stone, the burden of healing fell mainly to Dan... and Haidar, of course, the somewhat inexperienced cleric of Bast who had so recently joined the company.
The statue of Ingrid was brought aboard the Earthship and secured at the prow of the ship.
The rich furnishings of the manor were plundered and brought aboard the Earthship while Furio buried that particular entrance to the dungeon in rubble.
Extreme care was taken collecting the medusa head in a sack.
The demoness Delilah once more appeared to Paavo, again offering "intimate" knowledge of the Dark Tower and its inhabitants, as well as a pledge of non-hostility from the demons whose loyalty she held. And Paavo once more refused her, driving her off with threat of the Holy Avenger.
Securing the ship in a more defensible position at the edge of town, our heroes rested and rememorized spells, again utilizing the carpet of meditation to great effect. More healing was doled out and plans were made. Extensive plans that took many hours. The denizens of the dungeon, now twice-bloodied, were perhaps somewhat more wary of the party and did not sally forth to attack again during the night.
In the morning, primed to face a dragon, fortified with spells of Endure Heat and Flight, the party descended the White Tower. There, Holomir renewed his commitment to join the party with a contingent of battle-gnomes when they were ready to assault the Dark Tower in earnest. His charge being the top-most entrance, Holomir confessed to having little recent knowledge of the dungeon surrounding the bottom-most level of the White Tower. He described poor Harringdon, who resided at the base of the tower, a kindly man whose mind was damaged when the White Tower fell. He told of the Room of Healing, where much healing magic was stored in times long past. Finally, Holomir provided the words with which to bypass the magical glyphs on the great doors in the Hall of Heroes at the base of the tower... which he admonished were not to be revealed to enemies of Mitra even on pain of torture or even death.
With a simple spell Colby unlocked the towering doors, Friedrich and Trommer heaved them open and a terrible, booming voice echoed through the entire dungeon:
"The White Tower has been opened, the White Tower has been opened, the White Tower has been opened..."
To be continued...

The dreadful voice echoed into silence and our heroes' light shone out from the White Tower, illuminating a desolate cavern and the ruin of a once-grand courtyard with the brightness of day.
"So much for surprise."
Paavo, Friedrich and Trommer flew out from the tower, sweeping around the perimeter of the cave. Colby followed more cautiously in gargoyle-form. Their light played over collapsed walls and buildings shored up with rubble, what seemed to be the remnants of a castle bailey, with still more intact buildings visible on the periphery. Above them all loomed the Dark Tower, its seamless black stone absorbing light in a most ominous fashion.
Nordel stalked forward through the rubble, bow at the ready, and sighted the dragon. Gleaming red scales shone in the light and the furnace-hearted dragon stared back from its precarious perch atop a crumpled building adjacent to the Dark Tower.
Paavo angled his flight, landed and charged across the broken masonry, Holy Avenger raised to smite the beast. The dragon eluded him, however, leaping into the air and roaring fire over Colby and Nordel. Steam rose from Colby's frost-rimed broadsword and his mage shield absorbed the blast. Nordel barely endured the inferno, saved only by the grace of the clerical spells upon him. Trommer flew in pursuit and Friedrich angled to intercept, but the creature was too fast. Lightning crackled through the air as Youssef hurled a bolt which flared harmlessly against a protective shield around the dragon. An answering bolt of lightning lashed out from the fanged gates of the Dark Tower, striking Paavo even through the circle of power projected by his holy sword. Intent only on the dragon, the paladin took to the air again.
Nordel expertly fired arrows into the dragon's exposed underbelly while Murkey and the red dragon exchanged gouts of lightning and fire: the smaller bronze dragon giving as good as he got before retreating, badly scorched, to the safety of the White Tower. The injured red dragon faltered in the air, unable to maintain altitude, unsteadily descending to the ground. Colby completed a powerful spell, his magicks failing to outright immobilize the monster, but managing to slow it considerably.
Spell-casting rang out from the darkness and Friedrich plummeted from the air, his spell of flight withering under enemy counter magicks. Although dazed, the stalwart dwarf suffered little injury from the bone-jarring fall.
Trommer and Paavo swooped around the slowed, earth-bound dragon; swords flashing, delivering grievous injury. Smoking and bleeding from terrible wounds, the dragon was vanquished. Everything was still and silent for a moment as the dragon died and then an intense fireball exploded atop Paavo and Trommer, smashing through the paladin's circle of power and burning away their clerical protections. Trommer shrugged off the blast, warded thoroughly by a pearl of fire protection, but Paavo was staggered by the flames.
A boulder sailed from the darkness and landed with a crunch next to Nordel.

1/12/2014Haidar (experience capped - must train) 5th level cleric 13000 Haidar (experience capped - must train) 5th level magic-user 22499 What happens when a character who is experience capped gets level drained? Do they immediately become eligible to get XP again, up to the cap amount? Or must they train before they can get any more XP, even if they lose XP and drop below the cap?

If Haidar were level drained he would lose magic-user experience, whatever it took to reach 4th level from 3rd level. Something like 5000XP. He could then earn 1/2 experience as a magic-user, but would still be capped as a cleric.
A multi-classed character (or character with two classes) who is drained of an experience level always loses the highest level he or she has gained (e.g., a halfling 2nd level fighter/3rd level thief would lose one level of thieving ability). If all levels are equal, the highest level of the class which requires the greatest amount of experience points is lost. If a multi-classed character (e.g., a fighterlmogic-user) is struck by a creature which drains two levels, a level is drained from each class.
