In Pentadastion, Bolo will hire Fabius the sage/lawyer to draw up a will and another document (details to DM by email). He will purchase a scroll case in which to carry these documents. He will also visit the Merchant House of Vulroose (details of transaction to DM by email).
Costs noted. Email response imminent.
Nordel has no urgent need for cash, so he doesn't want the flat-sum 2000gp deal. He will wait for the general distribution to the party and see how that turns out.
That made me laugh.
In Pentadastion he buys 5 flasks of oil.
Costs noted.
[Long rambling post deleted]
Money is complicated.
Seems like it.
-Paavo will have the potions ID'd by the alchemist we purchase the spell ink from.
For such good customers, why not?
Oil of Disenchantment (porcelain vial)
Potion of Sweet-water (porcelain vial)
Elixir of Madness
2 Potions of Speed (porcelain vial / fizzy white)
4 potions of Extra Healing (sealed metal vial / deep rose-colored)
--Paavo will see if any potions are for sale.
Not really... Potion-making requires rare ingredients and the assistance of an enchanter. Most of the store-front alchemists in Pentadastion are merely shopkeepers who supply spell ink and stock the spell components that magic-users require, and sometimes lend their expertise on special projects; or spagyrists* who peddle dubious cures to "humours" which might afflict the well-to-do citizenry.
(*word of the day)
One nice alchemist does refer you to a sometimes-colleague of his, a southern alchemist-wizard, who goes by the name of Kandirii. Described as an "eccentric genius," he lives in a tower not far to the south, a day at most, by the sea.
Kandirii definitely has potions, elixirs and alchemical wonders that he'll trade or sell.
The Southern temples have no qualms with simony, selling blessings and potions. Probably why they're so popular around here.
-The ship is nice but has limited maneuverability.
Fortunately the Uzrivoy doesn't have actual feelings that can be hurt.
--If we haven't done so, show the books to the sage. Does he interested in purchasing them?
He seems excited by the tomes. He will offer the party 500GP for each they are willing to part with.
-Can he provide additional information about getting to the temple?
Yes. I will post a synthesis of all the information gained in the Temple of Elemental Evil thread.
-Where do we need to go to get onto Tzila's map? How far away is that?
South. Kinda far.
-Where is the White Tower relative to this?
That's an interesting tale...
Legend and Church history relate that it is nigh unto fifteen centuries since the patriarch of Law and Good, Mitra, established a sanctuary to the One God in Redmoon Pass. Tales were told of his holiness and people sought the wise man to be healed and blessed. He was indeed a living legend, the first true cleric of the One God, responsible for converting the Old Empire to the faith. Near the end of his mortal years, it became his task to lead a holy crusade against worshippers of the snake demon, Set, destroying the demon's mortal form and routing his army of evil. However, as a result of the encounter, Mitra also died.
It was not long before pilgrims once again came to the sanctuary seeking healing and blessing, Mitra's former assistants began to call on their mentor's name, finding power in it. As the centuries fled by and the religion spread, the founding place was not forgotten. Devotees erected a tall, ornate, white tower over the place where the crumbling first temple once stood. The hermitage of Mitra would serve as the headquarters for a noble order, the Lions of Mitra. For centuries, these paladins were the guardians of peace and justice throughout the Old Empire.
Many historians believe they were also responsible for the eventual fall of the Empire, when they took up cause against the lawful emperor. But that's another tale...
When the moribund Empire finally collapsed, it was corrupt and rotted from the inside. The Lions of Mitra understood that they needed a more active role in governing. From the chaos, they established the Compact of Twelve Lords; forging the Rhunan Confederacy from the fragmented city-states of the eastern half of the Empire. Whatever their ultimate ambitions, their just and goodly rule would only last a brief span before the White Tower fell.
The mystery of the destruction of the shrine was never truly solved. Landslides buried the pass seemingly overnight. The remaining paladins quietly moved the spiritual heart of their order to the site of the battle in which Mitra. originally died, some hundred leagues away to the southwest. However the Order would never truly recover...
Within a few years, a village of treasure seekers grew atop the debris piles, guided by tales and maps. The small hamlet of tents and shacks became known as Mitra's Fist or as "Mitra's Folly" to unbelievers. After several years, the Church built a shrine and established a mission to keep an eye on the fortune hunters, in case any lost artifacts of the One God should turn up. After a decade, small amounts of treasure began to trickle out the pass and Mitra's Fist became a popular stop for traders enroute to the Desert Kingdoms.
And then one day news stopped coming from the village.
It's been three hundred years and Redmoon Pass has become frequented only by ignorant, wayward or weather-driven travellers who fear the whim of the elements more than they dread the terror of old legends. Situated centrally in the pass, the tiny village of Mitra's Fist appears to be a haven from the many storms that stalk wayfarers in the high mountain reaches. Even so, the wise and knowing do their best to avoid Mitra's Fist, better known as "Mitra's Folly," and caravan leaders find excuses to brave the danger-fraught western passes rather than use Redmoon Pass.
I also have questions about a few of the items.
hand axe 2 (moderately enchanted) (throwing) (DMG) -
Friedrich -
these return when thrown, btw.
black marble baton (undead control up to 4HD) (as potion)
Is this just one use or does it have charges? Charges.javelin (moderately enchanted) (piercing) (DMG)
it's equivalent to a +2 weapon for purposes of what it can damage. Otherwise it is launched at base THAC0, +6 to hit, 1d6+6 to damage.Platinum statue of mantiger (Kazhakh - powerful spirit creature) –
Is this like a wondrous figurine that we can use to summon him? This is indeed a means by which to summon Kazhakh, a powerful spirit creature. I will remind the party he detected as evil.red clay ring (elemental command: mud)
We never actually identified this and thus don’t know it’s actual powers, unless I missed something The ring telepathically conveys its powers, but not its limitations.
Meld Into Stone
Water Breathing
Stone Shape
Earthquake
Transmute Mud to Rock / Transmute Rock to Mud
Transmute Dust to Water / Transmute Water to Dust
Airy Water
Conjure ElementalIn Pentadastion, Bolo makes discreet inquiries about the political status of the Thieves Guild.
There is a fairly traditional Thieves' Guild in Pentadastion, with one very powerful boss controlling nearly the entire criminal underworld. Rumor is he's either a Syndic Lord or in the pocket of one.
The Guild is currently at war with a gang that has taken over the harbor, as well as dealing with some attrition of its members to this Veiled Society, which in addition to anarchist leanings, sabotage and bomb-making, seems to have a strong redistributionist attitude toward wealth.
If we have not done so already, the clerics will
remove the curse on Friedrich
That was assumed done.
Youssef would like to learn something like
Elemental Turning. He would give up both new spells for this. If not possible, he will try to learn Ice Storm and Fire Shield. He will add the new spell(s) to the new bronze tablet.
Later editions being so susceptible to power-creep, I see this as written being a 5th level spell. The area of effect would need to be reduced / number of hit dice would need to be limited to make it a 4th level spell.
If Youssef wants to pursue this research as a 4th level spell, let me know. Otherwise Fire Shield and Ice Storm are fine.
He will purchase a 3rd bronze tablet.
To his copper tablet he will add Enlarge, Reduce and Mending.
To his 1st bronze tablet he will add Fly and Gust of Wind.
To his 3rd bronze tablet he will add Detect Invisibility, Knock, Levitate, Strength, Lightning Bolt and Identify.
I'll need to review these posts later to make sure the spellbooks are all updated correctly.
No spell failures. Assuming he has already learned all these successfully.
We should arrange according to level. Colby get +3 (+1 ring, +2 robes), Mary gets +2 (ring), Youssef and Bolo get +1 (rings). Is that reasonable? Do we have that many rings?
The party has at least one more +1 ring of protection floating around.
The description of the gauntlets is not explicit. I assume they help with Bend Bars and Open Doors. Do they add to Weight Allowance?
No, just hitting and smashing things.
I was assuming that the robes of protection aren't compatible with deeppockets robes, which is an issue for the magic users.
Can't wear two robes. Can you put Deeppockets on a magic robe though? HMmmmmmmmmmm...
Just for the sake of asking, is it possible to remove the curse from a cursed magic item?
No, a cursed item suffers from a critical design flaw. If it were disenchanted though, the material from which it is made could be salvaged assuming the right methods were known/used.
Trommer will spend some time looking for a druid to get training.
He only finds priests and temples.
He will use the dreamstone to aid the search (not sure how many weeks have passed but there should be at lest 3 uses).
Trommer dreams a dream!
He's flying through the mountains to the southwest, and then he's down, down in the ground.. walking through what can only be described as a dungeon corridor and then he enters a strange feminine room full of frilly, girly things. There's a vanity with a mirror and incense is heavy in the room. Chained to the wall is a man! A grey-haired man, who looks strangely young... A cell nearby holds an old grey wolf. It paces around in agitation.
The dream ends!
Perhaps Bolo could make some inquiries in the halfing community for me too.
Bolo is actually mistaken for a gnome during his time in the city. He encounters no halflings or dwarves, though he does see a bunch of gnomes and even an elf.
He also gets an extra weapon proficiency at 10th level so he could train for a blunt weapon.
Let me know so I can figure time / cost.
Trommer could add spells to his spellbook. Did he or does he get to roll for his first spell? I assume that Featherfall was from a party spellbook. I can't recall. Also do rangers get the spell bonus for intelligence and wisdom?
First spells are given by a magic-user's master upon completing apprenticeship and making 1st level. In this case, whatever the party decided to give Trommer.
Trommer doesn't get to roll to learn a new spell until 11th level, at which point he can choose a PHB spell. Being a ranger he doesn't get to research spells.
I can't see why rangers/paladins should not have bonus spells for wisdom and intelligence. So mote it be.
What are the requirements to recharge the Pearl of Protection from Fire?
Who is Trommer asking?
This is a rare magical gem from the Far East. It contains draconic magic.
Is Trommer spending some days looking for additional bind wound treatments?
What about Nordel?
If either still has a bunch of days unaccounted for, I'll give them the option to do so at the start of the session.
Paavo will donate 1000 gp to the Church of the One God if there is one located in the city. If not he will look for other LG charities in the city.
There is a shrine to the One God. It is affiliated with a charitable organization as well.
And of course Trommer would get +6 damage from strength. Against large he would do d6 x 2 + 3 + 6 = 11-21. That's like bow specialist damage.
Brutal.
He will ask Fabius for any information he has on the Lions of Mitra.
See above.
Mitra does seem to be a controversial figure with the dervish types, representing a schism in the faith, an East & West thing.
As you liquidate items to pay expenses
Right now we're just tallying/tabulating.
Paavo will get Khaddil's help taking the coffin into town on a camel. He will see if the sage is interested in purchasing it or if he can recommend someone who might be interested in it.
150GP is the best offer, which is decent, considering the value of the wood and the artistry of the painting. The merchant thinks he can maybe make it into a coffee table... he also sells coffee if you wanted to take that in trade. Let me know if you're selling it.
More work on the spell library. This work will take place aboard the ship as we travel to the next adventure. We will split this among the 3 magic users, trying to maximize the chance of success. Colby should have 95% for all 5th level spells.
Spells copied successfully. No failures.Colby writes all the hard ones.
Purchase 100 more spell inks and two full spellbooks. Add these spells to the following books...
Noted.
I'll complete the new spellbook listing later.
