If Friedrich hasn't acquired new armor in Aldagmor then we can settle Rodrigo's IOU with the refurbished field plate. We'll try some Mends on it to see how that works. If not effective then we can resort to paying Rodrigo to fix it up.
OOC: Sorry about the "front line fighter" stuff. In none of the campaigns have we had a thief who wanted to act as a scout. Typically they were more worried about keeping safe in the back of the party and only back stabbing when the fighters had already distracted everyone. Also the sneaky stuff has never worked out for us in the past. Easier to just bust down doors and kill anything that comes against us. But I am happy to support Fin in whatever role he wants to fill. Fin may want to use a Strength spell on himself if a d6 is likely to increase his "to hit" and "damage adjustment". Not as nice as a magic sword but not bad either.

If Fin (or Colby) will provide Paavo with a daily Strength spell then he is willing to let Fin use the Ioun stone. How impractical would it be to make a regular practice of casting Strength spells on all of our fighters and rangers? I imagine Colby and Fin getting up long before dawn to do this each morning, like croissant bakers in Paris, so they can relearn their regular spell lists for the day while everyone else shaves and enjoys a leisurely breakfast.

Trommer, Marcus and Friedrich already have max Strengths. Of the fighters that leaves Paavo, Ingrid, Epicaste, Danaus and Danakes who could benefit from it. The people who would benefit the most are those that already have high strength (at least 17). Paavo has only a 13 strength but he is hoping that the strength he gets from his sword will be cumulative with the strength he gets from Finn. If not then he will probably stop asking for the spell for himself. Right now we have 3 magic users who can cast the spell. It lasts 1 hour per level of spell caster. It can't be cast in combat since it takes 10 minutes. So you want to use it judiciously. Like right before you enter a dungeon. Traveling over land makes it harder to predict when encounters will occur. So it is not likely to be as useful.
But typically every morning spellcasters spend time preparing their spells. So choosing strength for a slot or two is no more arduous than any other selection that would typically get used in the course of a day of adventuring.

Marcus is +2/+4 I think, so he could get a big bump with a strength spell. Does Trommer have a +1 STR bow? If so, Danakes could really use a spell, since the +1 damage applies before the doubling.

While at the tournament, Trommer would like to see if a few items can be found in the markets: Compass (lodestone) Spyglass Fire Starting Stone
He will also inquire if there is a cleric that could perform restorations and what the cost might be for him and Friedrich. We can also shop for some dwarven plate mail. Trommer has enough funds to get the plate mail if it is available but probably not enough for restorations.
Trommer has a +2 Strength Hartwood Longbow

Bolo suspects that buying a magic dagger for 100gp from a shifty-looking, moustachio'd man at a tournament is a bit like buying a genuine Rolex watch for $100 from a shifty-looking, moustachio'd man on the street in Times Square. He expresses scepticism and offers 15gp. How does the man respond to that? He's willing to be haggled down to 50GP, which he considers robbery. Can Bolo purchase an additional short sword in Aldagmor for the PHB price? If so, he will do that out of personal funds as it is a very modest sum. Yes. I'll just ask Stringer directly. He knows we have coin to spend and that we're magic users who can tell the difference between the real deal and a fake. We'd like a long sword, and several daggers or short swords. We're happy to give him the commission or finders fee he'd like. Stringer Bell lays it on the line. You're not going to find an enchanter capable of producing magic weaponry in this backwater barony. Maybe in Averoigne, or the Old Empire you could find something like that in the bazaars. Magic weapons around here are highly prized; family heirlooms or confiscated by the Church. In fact, they've got vaults full of seized weapons and artifacts... He can ask around but it's going to be expensive and if he does find something he's going to need to act on it quick, so he'll need money up front... Also Stringer Bell wants Colby to "put in some work." Or provide him with 500 reasons not to just shoot him right now. So are we gonna do the tournament on the board or what? Unfortunately no, as I'm not entirely comfortable with determining winners and awarding prizes like that. Also there are some logistics to work out for the side adventure to Castle Aldagmor, accounting which will need to be done in session. Trommer & Friedrich will each fight an opponent in the penultimate round, then the winners of those matches will have to fight each other to determine the victor of the melee contest. Bolo will have to out-shoot his competition in the final round of the archery competition. And Trommer will joust. While at the tournament, Trommer would like to see if a few items can be found in the markets: Compass (lodestone) Spyglass Fire Starting Stone A compass would cost 50GP A spyglass would cost 150GP. A piece of flint would cost 10SP or 1/2GP. He will also inquire if there is a cleric that could perform restorations and what the cost might be for him and Friedrich. The Archbishop of Dunthrane is the most high cleric in the land. As far as price goes for what you're asking -- how much would you pay for a miracle of God? (The DMG suggests "10,000 plus a like amount per level of experience level of the recipient"-- so we're talking on the order of 60000GP apiece to restore someone to 6th level. daaaaaang)

We will ask Sherlane's arms master if he knows any retired adventurers who may be interested in selling some magic weapons (or other items) they no longer need? I hear that Sherlane and he used to do some adventuring so he must know others who used to adventure but are now living a more quite life.

The alchemist who nixed the holy salt paste idea referred Bolo to a skilled fletcher in Aldagmor. The fletcher has built some special arrows to which Bolo can attach holy water vials as a payload. The arrows are 2gp each. Bolo has purchased a dozen out of personal funds, but he would like to be reimbursed (24gp), if that accords with party policy, as he running rather short of cash.
So please add some glass or crystal vials of holy water to the party shopping list. A dozen would be nice, but five or so would be okay for now, if we need to conserve cash or encumbrance.
Q for DM: How long does it take Bolo to attach the payloads? It is something that can be done quickly in melee, or do they need to be prepared in advance?

I hear that Sherlane and he used to do some adventuring so he must know others who used to adventure but are now living a more quite life. Kaerin the arm-master will gladly reminisce about past adventures, wistfully recounting the days when he, Sherlane and their friends vanquished the Barrow-Wight of Critchley Falls or the time they saved Suskyn from the Wolfskull Goblin Tribe. He hasn't really kept in touch with his old traveling companions except obviously Sherlane who is himself an avid collector of magical items. Kaerin still has his suit of enchanted chainmail. After they split up, some of them went north to fight off the barbarian incursion (no offense meant to Paavo). Modrain, the cleric, died there at Capel Tower. Ergan, he was a fighter, retired and built the Drake & Castle Inn up in Falworth-- pretty successful he might add. He did have a magic sword once upon a time. Katzani, a thief, and a damn good one, went west and he never heard from her again.

I am not sure I would endorse this plan. Holy water is rather expense (25 gp) and cumbersome (25 gp). Also it doesn't do all that much damage (2-7) in addition to the arrow damage, if applicable. Any miss with an arrow will of course not do splay damage and will more than likely destroy the vial. And now we have magic users with magic missile - a sure fire way of damaging level draining undead from a distance. Why don't we just use some of the holy waters we still have. And then we can restock if this proves successful. But again this is just my opinion, it is not solely up to me to decide how the party funds are used.

How much could the bug spear be sold for? A +1 spear is 3,000 gp. Perhaps with my bartering skill and the helm I could sell it enough to get dwarven armor.
I might even part with Durandal if it helps. What is the value for an unbreakable sword?

And then we can restock if this proves successful. At 2-5 damage per magic missile, our magic users are going to take a few rounds to kill a high-level undead creature, even if all of them memorize multiple copies. So ISTM that 2-7 twice per round, or four times per round if Danakes wants to use these arrows too, could be really useful. And being able to do this while not in touch range of a level-drainer must surely be worth 25gp a pop. Bolo would be happy to have an understanding with the party about when it's appropriate to use these arrows. He sees no particular reason to waste them against zombies, for example, even though they would work. Maybe just against vampires? Any holy water Bolo is going to be able to shoot needs to be pre-attached and ready in his quiver when it's needed, so I don't think it will work to just use the holy water we already have. BTW, the Monster Manual says 2-7 damage against vampires, but 2-8 against all the other undead that I've checked. Which is it? Or is it really different?

Colby has a rate of 3 magic missiles a round. Finn and Mary each have a rate of 2 a round. So on average that is 7 x 2.5 = 17.5 hit points a round. Against an AC 0 vampire Bolo and Danakes hit less than half the time. For simplicity assuming a 33% hit rate, that means 4 x 4.5 x .33 = 6 damage a round. So the archers are definitely going to take longer than the magic users. Also there is no chance for friendly fire with a magic missile. And a holy water can be lobbed for the same damage.
I think we have 8 or so holy waters among the party. No one tried using them last time when they had the chance. So I say you fit some of those to your new fangled arrows rather than buying additional holy waters.
I think the 2-7 in the DMG is what we use.

Some pending items I'd like to clear up so we don't have to spend time on them on Sunday: - Bolo and Danakes will each take 5 of Colby's Continual Light stones. Thanks, Colby.
- Are Trommer and Friedrich carrying sufficient party funds to reimburse Bolo the 24gp he just spent on the vial-bearing arrows?
- Are Trommer and Friedrich able/willing to give Bolo 275gp from party funds for 20 arrows worth of paralysis paste? (Or 200gp for 12?) Bolo doesn't have the cash to make this purchase on his own, and he can't wait to get the money until we're back in Devonshire, as the alchemist he is getting the stuff from is in Aldagmor.
- Bolo is going to hold on to the ice beads unless someone else takes the initiative to discover something cool we can trade them in for.
- Where are we on keeping or disposing of the charisma brush Danakes is carrying?
- I believe the consensus is that Danakes is keeping the green elixir of health, wearing the +3 studded leather, and giving the fiery orange sphere (Ioun stone +10HP) to Paavo. Does anyone disagree?
- IIRC, Danakes's current armor is regular plate. Does anyone in the party have a need for that? If not, then unless I'm wrong that he's getting the studded leather, presumably he will want to sell the plate. How much does he get for that? (PHB list price is 400gp.) Does it go into his own pocket or the party kitty?

I was suggesting holy water arrows as well as magic missiles, not instead of them. Surely every little bit helps when there's a danger of level-draining? Also: - Bolo can keep shooting arrows for as many rounds as he has some left in his quiver. Presumably Colby, Fin, and Mary are going to want to use at least a few of their spell slots for something other than this.
- With Bolo's halfling bonus, his chance to hit with an arrow is way better than with just lobbing.
- I am informed that the target of an arrow-borne vial has to save versus crushing blow (19) for the vial to not break, which is much better (for us) than the save for a lobbed vial, which I think is versus normal blow (14).
- Because these are blunt-tipped arrows specially designed to attach to a vial, I believe friendly fire is not an issue. They have no point, so I can't imagine they'd do much damage to any of us.
But if those currently carrying holy water are willing to give some of them to Bolo (say 4) then he is willing to go with that and see how it plays out. I didn't realize we had so many. It has been over 20 years since my last D&D campaign, and even then we were in a milieu that had few undead, if any. The best way of dealing with them may not be as obvious to me as it is to others in the group. I would like to have an opportunity to try out my ideas, even if they appear newfangled and odd to those who have more experience.

I might even part with Durandal if it helps. What is the value for an unbreakable sword? On the street? Without a certificate of authenticity or a magic-user for independent verification? It's a fine spear, sure, balanced, intricately engraved; but you'd be lucky to get 50-100GP. Durendal's a different story as any weaponsmith would recognize Weyland's forge-mark and be able to trace the lineage of the sword. 1000GP. Potentially more at auction. IIRC, Danakes's current armor is regular plate. Does anyone in the party have a need for that? Retail prices in the PHB/DMG are not resale prices. You can get 50% value in coin, more in store credit. Danakes suggests getting store credit from Rodrigo and applying it to the cost of fixing the damage absorption on Friedrich's refurb field plate. Or would it be wasteful to do that without trying Mends first? Danakes feel that in exchange for giving up his plate for this purpose, he should get back the value of his original chain mail, because he was wearing that when he joined he party and paid for it himself out of personal funds. OOC: I forgot to ask whether Danakes is hoping to get his chain mail's retail price, resale price, or trade-in value. I imagine that's negotiable, or I could ask later, if it matters.
