Cool. When can we double specialize? 5th?
When is Colby planning on switching? Ever thought of joining the priesthood? We are in trouble once Randall leaves.
So we are going to spend a couple more days exploring the orc tunnels before joining Father Thomas in delivering the relics to the abbot in Devonshire. Right? Do we want to give the note we found to Sir Reese or do we want to try to take care of that ourselves after visiting Devonshire? It is in the right direction.

You can double specialize at 4th, once you get your new proficiency. I was planning to stay a thief until 5, when I get my triple-damage backstab. Considering that'll be at 10,000 XP and I'm 40% there, it shouldn't be too far.
I only have a 12 WIS, so I couldn't do anything with a major characteristic other than INT and DEX.

Cool stuff -- moving along. I vote for cleaning out the orc tunnels while Tom is sorting out his mule team et al. Then we go with him to get the reward. I'm ambivalent about letting Sir Reese in on the 'gathering.' On the one hand, it'd be nice to have a few extra targets for the orcs. On the other hand, I'd rather have the loot for us rather than the tax man.

I agree 100% if the timing works out. The orc cave is 4 hrs north, so we can head up there, fight the bad guys, and head back in a day.

Friedrick always wants to fight but I just feel like our plans to make clearing out the orc cave into a day trip might not work out as planned. Not that I care.
Let's go to the cave!!

To keep everyone abreast of Paavo's actions that evening. Paavo will ask a errand boy to carry a message to Sir Reese requesting a meeting tonight or in the early morning. Paavo explains in the note that he has information that should be brought to the appropriate authorities regarding activities of the orcs. Maybe Sir Reese could forward the information on to the Sheriff of Devonshire. Paavo finds no shortage of village youths to employ as messengers, nor does he have any trouble securing an audience with Sir Reese that very evening. Being a "hero of Willowsby" opens doors, it seems. Paavo will bring a copy of the translation of the note and explain what little we have learned about the information contained. He will explain that in the excitement of defeating the orcs and rescuing Father Thomas he overlooked his civic duty. While he is not from these southern lands he still recognizes the lawful authorities and would not want to endanger any of the citizenry by his failure to act. He will then go on to explain the party's intent to return to the orc caves. It is always dangerous amongst the goblinoid and there is a chance they may not return - another reason we should not be the only ones in possession of the information in the note. Should we return we would be happy to investigate the meeting if so desired. We have plans to travel to Devonshire in the next couple of days so that would agree with our plans. Sir Reese is a solidly-built man with a serious, commanding presence-- at least moreso than anyone else you've met in Willowsby-- a knight of the realm, as well as a devout church-goer. He listens intently without interrupting until Paavo finishes. He then indicates that he is aware of much you have told him --Willowsby is a small town and word gets around fast. The party was not exactly circumspect in the disposition of the orc's treasure or the clearing of the cellars below the church. He further informs you that he, several of his men, Father Thomas and your party will be departing for Devonshire the day after tomorrow to deliver these holy relics unto the church there. Additionally two of his men will accompany your group to the orc caves to determine if any threat remains, as well as ensure the town's fair stake on anything valuable found therein. As for the note, well, it's not much to go on, but Sir Reese agrees the Sheriff should be informed, as well as the Lord Mage of Devonshire. He doubts that any significant force could/would be dispatched into the remote wilderness, to the Warlock Stone no less, to investigate such a "dubious" lead. All-in-all though he seems pleased by your report and encourages you to continue in these efforts -- "men of fortitude are needed in these dark times."

So does that makes Lee - Hank, the Ranger; me - Eric, the Cavalier; Scott - Presto, the Magician; Chris - Bobby, the Barbarian; and David - Sheila, the Thief? Dana is of course the Dungeon Master.

[In an attempt to learn more about the campaign...] Paavo agrees with the plans that have been made. He will thank Sir Reese for his time and invite him back to the Hungry Halfling for a meal if he has not already partaken of supper. Paavo says that he would also be happy to have Sir Reese's men join us as it is always good to learn more about your companions before venturing into hostile territory. Paavo will pay for the meals for any who join him. If accompanied by Sir Reese, he will direct conversation towards current events in order to find out more about what is happening in the shire. He will also ask about the experiences of Sir Reese and his two men. If not he will discuss current events with other patrons. After dinner he will retire to his room and check over his equipment in preparations for the morrow. He offers Mr. Trommer the use of the field plate, explaining that it is too encumbering for Paavo's use (550 gp, 6" movement). BTW, can Sir Reese provide horses or ponies for the trip to the orc cave or the trip south? It will certainly cut down on the travel time. Otherwise we will be moving at a 6".

[In an attempt to learn more about the campaign...] Good show! He will thank Sir Reese for his time and invite him back to the Hungry Halfling for a meal. Paavo says that he would also be happy to have Sir Reese's men join us as it is always good to learn more about your companions before venturing into hostile territory. He will also ask about the experiences of Sir Reese and his two men. If not he will discuss current events with other patrons. Sir Reese declines the invitation, his men will meet you in the morning. Paavo finds the patrons of the Hungry Halfling fairly talkative though: Seems recently a group of daring adventurers rescued Father Thomas and routed the vicious orcs who had attacked Willowsby during the King's Festival. Then, those same brave adventurers, delved beneath the ruin of the burnt-down church and faced the deadly guardians and traps therein; recovering much in the way of lost wealth and sacred relics. They're soon bound for Devonshire, to see the Abbot and the Sheriff! Other than that, not much going on around Willowsby these days. A three-headed calf was stillborn a week or two back. When they cut it open a bushel of snakes came wriggling out. It was then burned, salted and buried deep in the woods. That old fortuneteller is still in town after the King's Festival -- the jury's out on whether or not she's a witch, but there's no doubt she has some gift of prophecy. Word has it that the Abbot of Cinderham-on-the-Moors is looking for brave folk to help him in lifting an inconvenient curse.

He offers Mr. Trommer the use of the field plate, explaining that it is too encumbering for Paavo's use (550 gp, 6" movement). Field plate must be fitted to its wearer by a skilled armor, and (if nonmagical) can only be worn by the character for whom it has been manufactured Dalmarek the dwarven armourer/metalsmith might be able to assist if he's still in town... BTW, can Sir Reese provide horses or ponies for the trip to the orc cave or the trip south? Unfortunately he cannot. He has only enough for himself and his company, and those belong to the Sheriff of Devonshire.

We definately need to see the fortune teller. We can verify whether she is really a witch by throwing her in some deep water. If she floats then she is a witch.

I agree we should visit the fortune teller but only to see if she has any healing potions to sell. Paavo has nothing against witches per se.
Question: Eddie mentioned that paladins can only detect evil intent not evil alignment. If someone tries to lie or act falsely does that count as evil intent? For instance, if someone tried to sell Paavo a healing potion that wasn't such would his detect evil work?

For instance, if someone tried to sell Paavo a healing potion that wasn't such would his detect evil work? Bear in mind you are detecting evil, not greed or pettiness. If someone was selling you a flask of water and calling it a healing potion, you wouldn't detect anything. If they were selling you deadly poison, that's another story. Unless they didn't know it was poison.

The intent could still be evil as well as greedy. They are knowingly selling something that does not work which you are purchasing with the intent that it will save someone's life. Legally it is probably something like depraved indifference.
If we were just haggling over the exchange of some gems that would be greedy.

Legally it is probably something like depraved indifference. If we were just haggling over the exchange of some gems that would be greedy. I would argue that indifference is not evil, but would agree that if someone's intent was evil in addition to greedy, you'd pick up on the evil. I guess if you were to explain to every merchant the life or death circumstances of the transaction and they proceeded to trick you, knowing full well the consequences, that would be evil. And that's not even getting into mitigating circumstances like trying to feed your impoverished family. Suffice it to say, a Paladin's detect evil ability isn't really used to detect white lies or swindling merchants -- it's used to identify potent, evil cursed artifacts and disguised devils and such.

Paavo would not want to pervert the gifts of Ukko by using his power to gain an unfair advantage on the common man. He will generally assume that people have the benefit of the doubt. Only if he has prior knowledge would he attempt to use his power to discover the smallest evil thought in a man's soul.
