I guess the first thing to ask Viggo is whether there is any part of his story he would like to amend now that he is no longer charmed.

Yeah, pretty much every question flows from that. Specifically, has he been to her lair, is it the tomb, what sort of beasties are in it, etc.

Viggo is exceptionally haggard once awoken. He has only vague and disjointed memories of the past months, clearly having been under Runa's foul mental touch for most of that time. He recalls traveling to the Koldgarden with Ragnar and Bulvar, but both of his compatriots were lost to him some time ago. He does not recall whether they died or not, only that they were both gone from him at the same time.
Viggo's story about searching for Hrothgar's tomb still holds true. He claims to have searched through the records of Kerava and those held at Madsbad and unearthed a line claiming that Hrothgar served as holder of a fourth of Hjalmar's might. Even though Hrothgar was the Master of the Western Holdings, he is buried north of the Koldgarden - in the eastern part of the Land of Song. Viggo strongly believes these are hidden signs that Hjalmar was given a horn, and that it is the Eastern Horn, which you know as the last missing.
If Runa lairs in Hrothgar's tomb, Viggo does not know where it is. Viggo claims he has searched for many a day the area north of where he made camp, but his brain was clearly addled. Worse, he sees himself as a shell of the man he once was, having suffered Runa's kisses many times. Even with his bardic powers, he has lost much hard-won knowledge.

Well, Divination doesn't lie, so it's likely the tomb is in the swamp.

Any planning we need to do to take out Runa? I guess we will need some wooden spikes.
Given that she will need some time to regenerate we might want to go soon rather than later. Spell-wise I think the most important thing is protection from evil so that we don't get charmed. We have more than enough killing-power with weapons to take her out so long as she doesn't turn us against each other.
Alternatively we could get plenty of rest, memorize some spells and then go after her in the day light. She will be back to full strength but we will be more organized.

Main issue is we don't know where the tomb is. It could take hours of mucking about in the swamp, further depleting our strength, and then we pop in and find her fully regenerated.
And frankly I don't really want to fight a level draining undead. Basil should be up front - he can lose like 15 lvls and still retain the same combat efficiency. (5th lvl specialized fighter)
Really we should just grab the horn and go.

Grab the horn and go? We must destroy the vile undead! If we rest we can give everyone PfE and we'll be good to go.

Dell would be even more upset than Morvan at the drop in levels.

Rensslaer made an astute comment when he mentioned that the pairing of creatures (vampires and ice trolls) had opposite reactions to running water. It may be that we don't have to wait until sunrise to destroy the vampires, we heard the sound of running water coming from the natural cave where the ice trolls came from. Hopefully we can use that to destroy the vampires.
It still probably makes sense to rest here before venturing back out into the swamp but the sooner the vampires are completely destroyed the better by me.

Will running water actually kill vampires? I just thought they were hedged in by it. I'm much more comfortable waiting for dawn.
Also, ice trolls have good treasure. It might be worthwhile to find out where they came from. Can't miss out on a second ice troll horde!

There are definitely differences between these northern vampires and what I know about vampires (at least the stake in the heart still works). So the running water might not destroy them. But it is worth a try once we find the ice trolls lair.

Dell was a member of the Company of the Blue Sun. He is an elven thief/mage that was one of the few survivor's of the Demonweb Pits. Dell and Morvan are/were player by the same person.

Now that we have rescued Viggo, what's next? 1. Halakiri? 2. Farfasil? 3. Return the horn to Yngvar? 4. Basil self-trains for 4th level druid spells? 5. Steal a boat and sail south? 6. Get some nut oil and scrye for Cullen? 7. Go north to look over our lands? 8. Look for the missing Jarl? 9. Go after Her Dark Majesty while the Northmen hold off the invasion?

At first light, we go directly to Kerava. They need the horns ASAP, so we cannot delay. The return of Viigo will also likely bolster the morale of the Northmen, which is very important.
After that, I presume we'll get more orders/suggestions from Yngvar. I'd like to visit the summer people, get the magic cloaks they promised to loan us, and attack Halakiri. We can then wait a few weeks for Basil to self train.

Once we return the last horn and Viggo to Yngvar, the only thing in the Land of Song I am interested in doing is going after Hallakire. While I would like to have Cullen back I think from a game mechanics having fewer NPCs is better. Also we would need a guide for the faerie roads to find him and we have burned that bridge. I am fine with hanging around while Basil trains - it will give Kazan a chance to clean up his spell books and maybe make some potions. What can you make from vampires and ice trolls? (Undead slushy?) Some possible potions: gaseous form, animal control, human control, undead control, cold resistance.
I missed the meeting with the summer people, do we need their cloaks to reach Hallakire's lair? Could we use Fly and Water Walk spells along with Polymorph Self and Basil's shape-changing ability to reach it? Also we have the ring of water walking. Mikkel warned us about completely trusting the summer people so if we don't need their help I would prefer handling this on our own.

The summer people offered us cloaks of the manta ray. They suggested that we would be most successful if we swam to Hallakire's lair undetected and underwater. We could always try flying in at night, now that that's an option.

Running water kills vampires if they're immersed in it for long enough.
Another vote for headinh back to Kerava with the Viggo and the horn without delay.
This is the big show. We must combine the horns to defeat Her Dark Majesty once and for all. (Did they have all four horns last time they fought her??)

I would guess that with the clans gathering we will be asked to find out where the missing Jarl is. He would be needed for Yngvar to prperly gather the troops of his clan. I don't recall where he was said to go missing but I thought it was around madsbad or something. Mabye Viggo remembers!
"Hey Viggo! Do you recall any rumors as to where the Jarl went missing?"
I'm still for going after the dragon. Dragon's have loot. We would want to do that before we get sent after Her Dark Majesty in the far north. I would expect that the lawful and good among us would honor their pledges to the Jarl rather than finding a way to go south :)
Spring is in the air. Kazan should be able to find some squirrels with some left over nuts to make nut oil while Basil trains. Do we stall have the magical leather armor we weaseled off Macolm. Perhaps Basil can persuade him or have Yngvar do so for training.

The first thing we need to do is get past the devil with the pack of sightless hounds. Everyone should memorize continual light, protection from evil and dispel magic. We don't want anyone fighting in the dark, feared or charmed. Hopefully this time we can finish off the devil before he teleports away. I think the last promise we made to Yngvar was to find the horns which we have done. Yngvar asks you all to go on a somewhat secret, or at least not public, quest to recover the four War Horns of the Clans, key components of the victory won by Hjalmar over the forces of Her Dark Majesty decades earlier. When you accept, ... We threw in finding Viggo as a bonus. I don't think going after HDM is on the table. Even when Hjalmar defeated her it was part of the big battle. [The War Horns] were last sounded together during the Winter of Tears, more than seventy years ago, when the great jarl Hjalmar crushed Her Dark Majesty’s forces in a terrible battle upon a frozen fjord. It is sung that her body was broken and cast through the ice; her fell host scattered into the trackless wastes. After the battle they went north and destroyed Black Towen. But I don't think anyone has ever tried to attack her in her own city. Maybe if we were all 10th+ level. Once the forces of HDM are defeated, finding the lost Jarl should be something Yngvar can handle. Maybe Zinc can divine if he is still alive. If they want us to find him it will have to be a separate agreement. The only issue with going after the dragon is that Alfred is only 2nd level. He will be awed by the might of a dragon until 5th level. I guess he could hang back blindfolded and blow various horns as needed.

I would also suggest that we go to Madsbad so Basil can try and find a replacement instrument in case there isn't one in Kerava. Viggo will want his back.

All of the clans are converging on Kerava which means that all of the clan skalds should be there. I sure one of them would be willing to part with their second instrument for a champion of the clan. Actually Viggo or Yngvar should have extra instruments for Basil.

I don't remember when Josh left, but we made it back, we did some training, and we gave back all of the loot to Yngvar. He gave Alfred back the +2 scale and gave us a horn that cast PfE 10' for a turn on each party member when blown. He then let each of us pick any of the items we'd previously returned from any of the prior adventures.
Kazan took Hjortor's spear (Giantslayer) and Morvan took the wasp ring. After a lot of arguing, Zinc took a ring of warmth, Alfred took Teodor's dagger, Basil took the phylactery of wound closure, and Rennslaer took Hjortor's shield (+1/+2 when used by fighters; cast PfE 10" as if by a 9th level cleric once per day). Folke's Mantle and the Bear cloak were top contenders, but that's what we picked.

|
|
Post by venger on Jan 24, 2010 21:12:52 GMT -5
What I got from the description of Hjortor's shield was that it was +1 for non-fighters, but fighters was +2/+4 vs. lower planes creatures and cast a personal PfE.
Ingulf's Mantle, Folke's Bear Cloak - which we were told could give you lycanthropy.
Toivo also told us he ran down some supernatural leads and found the location of a "spirit" who could had information which could lead us to one of the three gems needed to work the terracotta army. (also we still need to kill some kind of demon and take its horn/bone? for the mallet)

You're likely right, re: the shield. But the PfE still has a duration as a 9th level fighter, right?
