eh. side-by-side comparison- Halberd - space required 5' dmg: 1-10/2-12 no special stuff
Ranseur - space required 1' dmg: 2-8/2-8 "These weapons do twice the damage indicated to size L creatures when set (firmly grounded) to receive a charging opponent."
"These weapons are capable of disarming an opponent on a score required to hit AC 8."
Ranseur all the way!

If we come back to the monestary, after training, how do we go about disarming/cross the pit trap with out taking another ride?

10 foot pole once we get remotely close to the pit.

10' pole might not have the weight behind it to trigger a pit that size. Could take 2 fully equipped people walking on it - that's how we fell into it.
Tie ropes to everyone and put someone heavy/strong in the back. Sort of like mountain climbing. Only horizontal.

So I think making Kazan cover all of the cost of the Cure Poison wasn't fair. The poisoning occurred in the course of the adventure while Kazan was attempting to fulfill his role in the party. As such it should be the party's responsibility to defray the cost. Things happen in the course of the adventure that decrease the reward to the party - a magic spear is burnt, a magic ring is devoured - and the individual is not penalized because this happens in the course of the adventure. Whether it is being poisoned by opening a locked chest or getting bitten by a snake while scouting ahead, the cost of keeping the monk/thief safe should be shared by the party.
I realize I should has said something before the treasure was split and I am unlikely to get anything from the party now but I wanted to discuss this to set future precedents.
BTW, anything big happen after I left.

The Company rarely made people have to cover the whole costs of raising them from the dead, and this seems to be similar. I don't remember quite when you left, but we went to see the sisters. They were disappointed that we didn't defeat The Eel. They were not disappointed that the rude member of our group had left, and Zinc was fairly successful in getting on their good side. They looked at our stuff and took the Iron Rod immediately. We haggled a lot over what to give them in exchange for training Morvan. In the end, they took the sack of holding as their second item and we got it back in exchange for the bronze ring, the ash wand, and a potion. They trained Morvan for 3100 GP and wrote Web in his book. Morvan bought ink from them to write Magic Missile into his book from the scroll. Afterwards, Dana told us that we gave up a Rod of Cancellation, a Ring of Fire Resistance, a Wand of Magic Detection and a Potion of Diminution. Knowing that, I think it was a good trade. We left them for the monastery. We went in and tried to open the exterior door to the dining room, as we usually do. Basil failed his open doors check and immediately the other three doors flew open and skeletons and zombies came out. We killed them and stopped there.

So I think making Kazan cover all of the cost of the Cure Poison wasn't fair... I realize I should has said something before the treasure was split and I am unlikely to get anything from the party now but I wanted to discuss this to set future precedents. Under the circumstances, I don't think it would have been unreasonable for everyone to pitch in 100-200gp. But you would still have had to bear the brunt of the cost. What we should do is set aside an extra share for party expenses. If at the end of the adventure there aren't any such expenses (poisons to be neutralized, PCs to be raised from the dead, curses to be removed, items to be identified?, etc) or there's money left over, then we split that share 5 ways. As it stands now, everyone spent all their money and most of us are indebted to the Bank of Basil. Monks, much like paladins (q.v.), may not retain more than a small fraction of whatever treasure they gain... While monks may retain money sufficient for their modest needs, and to support their henchmen (see 5 below), all other treasure and excess magic items must be bestowed upon (non player) religious institutions. You would have had to tithe all your excess money anyways. BTW, anything big happen after I left. Rensslaer and Cullen left for the City-State of the Invincible Overlord. Rensslaer is 5th level and will be a 1st level fighter in 3 months. He got 1 additional hit point... Cullen is promised a magic shortsword whenever we next meet him. I made a new character. An elf ranger. We were tasked by the Lord (Guy?) of Fort Guy to go to the Baron and tell him about the hobgoblin army. Obviously we didn't. ** all the stuff David posted right before I did.

Under the circumstances, I don't think it would have been unreasonable for everyone to pitch in 100-200gp. But you would still have had to bear the brunt of the cost. I think covering half the cost for major healing and raising from the dead seems reasonable. Kazan is happy to accept any charity from his party members on this behalf - he has a lot of training to do. You would have had to tithe all your excess money anyways. The requirement for monks only to "retain money sufficient for their modest needs" and the cost of training are at odds. Monks have to train at each level above 2nd while paladins only need to train when they get cleric spells. So comparing the two isn't really accurate. A non-adventuring monk could in theory lead a very aesthetic life style but one actively leveling up should be able to keep at least the maximum funds to train for the next level (level x 7 (max(d6 + 1)) x 100 gp x 2 (self-train)). Given that 50 gp is considered a large sum, there is no way the 5600 gp that Kazan could need for 4th level can be considered modest. The only comparable case is Jasper. However, it isn't quite the same as Jasper benefited from being a henchman and so Raven could pay for his training without Jasper himself holding on to a lot of treasure. Alternatively we could come up with other rules for monk training...

We should come up with a better system than splitting everything equally. (yes, GASP, I said it) All the treasure we find could be tossed into a group fund from which each character is paid a monthly stipend. Level x 100gp x 2. Everyone can afford their monthly "cost of living" and put some away for personal wants. Training, healing, etc. could come out of the group fund. Clearly this benefits spellcasters and those needing to train more than fighters. So perhaps those characters not sapping the group fund for training could get an additional 500-1000gp bonus (depending on how successful we are that adventure), on top of their "salary." Having the magic-user or cleric heavily indebted to other characters just so he can be effective isn't fair. Everyone is benefiting from useful cleric and magic-user spells. Otherwise I think Zinc would justified in charging 2000gp per Neutralize Poison or Morvan charging 500gp per Identify spell. The requirement for monks only to "retain money sufficient for their modest needs" and the cost of training are at odds. Monks have to train at each level above 2nd I think maybe powers that aren't actively used shouldn't have to be trained for. Stuff like: Also you should dual class soon!!!

The difficulties we usually run into with treasure distribution schemes is with NPCs. Since we all know that we're in it for the long term, we're fine with group funds. NPCs get screwed because they need to level up more slowly than we do, and because we're less likely to approve one of their funding requests.
Also, if we have group funds, we need a group name...

I think an NPC would be happy with something like level x 100gp x 2 + 500-1000gp. Or a similar formula. Especially one we rescue from the pits of a vile dungeon. These ex-prisoners are real uppity, demanding equal shares of treasure.
Back to the old group name discussion, eh? Not happy with:
FORT GUY'S GUYS or Basil's ISLAND DOG CADRE of ORDER

I currently have a 16/20 intelligence so it is unlikely that I can become a magic user. So it looks like there will be another fighter for awhile... Which means I will have to get to 6th level fighter and 7th level magic user before I can use the monk skills. Definitely in it for the long haul. I guess Basil can fill the role of thief and Kazan can become the front line fighter. We should do another entry level adventure with our high hit point/low ability characters.

Thanks. : )
Chaotic Good isn't so bad. I'm a free spirit! And level capped at 8th level unless I roll well on the percentile dice.
Yeah, bow specialist to the exclusion of any other weapon proficiency. Didn't realize how stunningly effective they were. I always assumed Raven was awesome because he was like 10th level when I started.

So are you taking point so that you can find tracks, prevent surprise and get your pre-initiative shot? Or are you going to hang out in the second row a la Raven?

Zinc and Basil are front row. They've got the mega hit points and then there's the whole platemail vs. leather armor thing. Give me a couple levels, a suit of magic armor and we'll see.

So there's a 20% chance of you dual-classing to MU and and 80% chance of becoming a fighter first? I think that'll work well, for you to be our front line fighter while Basil is our thief. I was thinking about dual-classing and I realized that Basil has no-one to train with when he dual classes. We'll need to get Cullen back in the party while he earns his 2000 XP apprenticing.
