Does Silence 15' act as a sound barrier if you are in a confined space (like a 1" passageway) preventing most/all sound from one side of the spell reaching the other side?
I am thinking of this in analogy to Darkness spells. Someone in the silenced area cannot hear anything inside or outside of the area in the same way that someone in a darkened area cannot see anything inside or outside the area. Similarly someone outside the silenced area cannot hear what is happening inside the silenced area which goes equally for a darkened area. Now darkening a passageway certainly prevents someone on one side of the area seeing the far side. It seems to me that the same thing should hold for a silenced passageway. I realize that sound propagates through the solid wall but that should only be detected if your ear was in direct contact with the wall.
So if this works what I am wondering is could we cast silence (and darkness) on a stone, have it picked up by an unseen servant and then carried 6" in front of us. This would act as a way of preventing opponents from surprising us since they wouldn't know we were coming.

I was looking at Unseen Servant for the purposes of carrying Continual Light stones into battle ahead of the party-
The 3" radius kind of limits the effectiveness.

How about an invisible familiar?

Silence only lasts one round per level or something like that, which makes it difficult to use unless we're sure where the bad guys are.

Do we allow spell research? How much would it cost and how long would it to create a Continual Silence spell?

It takes tens of thousands of GP and many weeks. Since Silence is a cleric spell and not also a magic user spell (I think) it is probably a lot harder and more costly. Researching spells that already exist but we don't yet have is probably a better bet.

How much would it cost and how long would it to create a Continual Silence spell? Looks like there'd be a cost of 50,000 to 60,000 GP, and study time of around 2 months. Of course, a rock with a permanent Silence spell on it is like Wizard Kryptonite... so I wouldn't be surprised if such a spell isn't possible at all.

Besides, Winthrop has already announced his intention of researching Protection from Siege Weapons first.
