Summarizing two weeks ago: Flush with victory over the hill giant guards, the Company strode up the path, invisible. Unforeseen by them, the cart traveling downwards crashed into their path, precipitating a battle. The creatures slain or put to flight, Winthrop destroys the evil undead in the tower. As the Company runs up to the Steading, Winthrop summons giant bugs, slays hill giants, norkers, and a troll. He then seals the enemy into their own stockade.
Last week: The shouted plans made while running up the hill are for naught. No preparatory spells are cast. No organized two fronted attack is made. Instead, the Company splits. Winthrop remains alone aloft. Dell, Adrienne, and Jasper chase after the cart. The rest barge into the kennel, known to formerly house dire wolves. The wolves greet them with tattered skin, rancid flesh, and large, sharp teeth.
While the undead wolves are a handful, they are managed and the Company arrays around the entryway to the stockade. The door bursts open and undead of all shapes and sizes pour forth. Orcish zombies, Ogrish zombies, and Giantish zombies all shuffle free, surrounding and swarming over the Company. The ferocity of the attack is stunning, and the Company is sorely struck.
Oaklock attempts to strike down his foes with crushing ice, but fails and falls under their blows, skull crushed and ground into dirt. Al and Otto form a line with Cedrus, but Otto 's chest is caved in by undead bludgeoning.
Hugh and Cedrus attempt to destroy their undead opponents, but find that they are made of more stern stuff! Few of the undead flee and Hugh is hard pressed.
Winthrop, flying in from outside, attempts to save Hugh and Raven, who is surrounded on all sides, facing zombies of all shapes and sizes. A human, clad in heavily scarred armor and wielding a shield with an inverted black ziggurat, casts spells at Winthrop and throws a strange metal ball at Hugh before fleeing back into the Steading.
Jasper arrives with Snookums, slightly turning the tide of the battle. The great bear is torn and battered, but grows enraged, hugging and rending the undead. Lightning from Winthrop and axe and sword blows from the others slowly grind the dozens of undead to meal while Cedrus keeps Al alive.
As the last of the undead flee in fear or fall to axe and sword, Winthrop peers into the steading. Trolls and giants wait the Company's entry into the halls. Winthrop uses the wand of steam to hold them from charging the Company.
Outside, the sounds of battle grow loud, and Winthrop flies up and out of the kennel. The bodies of Otto and Oaklock that were being dragged out are dragged back in. A huge bonfire has erupted outside of the entryway to the stockade, violet in color with a red pillar in the middle of it. Bodies lie on the ground burning like fat candles. Giants lob boulders through the fire and the bonfire lurches forward into the doorway of the stockade.
Winthrop dives through the smoke hole of the great hall and down to the entry hall, over the top of the fire to within. There he strikes at a heavily armored foe that has laid Dell low and paralyzed Adrienne. As the stockade begins to burn, the armored man turns and runs back through the fire into the stockade.
Cedrus and Hugh finally succeed in bringing Otto back from the death's door, in time to face the return of the fled cleric and four giant headless wights. Al and Hugh are paralyzed and Cedrus is only minorly effective against the wights. Snookums rends one wight to bits, but Otto must face the remaining two alone. Summoning his courage, he slays one and then nervously falls over on the ground, overextending a lunge. Diego uses his arrow of cleric slaying against the cleric to poor effect and the sorely injured cleric staggers off, pale and sweating.
The giant headless wight swings at Al who shudders under its touch. Jasper is able to slay it with no further difficulty.
Raven and Diego try to cover all the approaches, knowing some undead to be merely feared, and shout for blessings to be cast by Cedrus. He replies that he has three spells left.
