I erroneously used the rear attack modifier today, inducing the same error in Otto. Attacks from behind only gain a bonus when the position of the target is fixed. If you are fighting an opponent, someone else may circle around and attack from behind. Your opponent can not independently circle you. Thus, a single thief can not circle and backstab an opponent.
In the combat with the bugbears, if both of the bugbears had engaged Otto, one could have circled behind Otto, while the other engaged from the front. The one that moved and attacked would gain the +2 for a rear attack, while the one that did not move would have attacked from the front.
I likely thought in my head to do that, and then decided to move the other bugbear off on some crazed whim, not realizing that it totally changed the combat. Sorry for the mix-up.
