Pavel tells those standing that he snuck by in the great chaos of the battle, first when everyone charged forward, and then when the hobgoblins were engaged. He thought to attack from behind, but with the worgs coming, he just kept moving back behind the goblins. Once the webbing appeared, he quickly disguised himself as a hobgoblin to attempt to keep Otto from being gutted. It seems to have all worked out.
He reports that the tunnel is certainly not clear. At least one of the worg-riders continued down the tunnel past him, as did a hobgoblin, and several times the hobgoblins yelled down past him for reinforcements. In fact, when the worgs howled at the beginning of the battle, he is certain he heard answering howls from down the tunnel.
He's checked about 100 feet further down the tunnel as well, and not found any new passageways. Apparently this tunnel leads a long distance away from the fortress.
He apologizes about burning the web. It was his idea, so he could reconnect with the Company, since Otto and he were trapped on the wrong side of the web. He thought only goblins and worgs were trapped within it, not that there were Company members and others trapped as well.
Lastly, the freed slaves who were caught in the webbing were slain by the burning web. Several of the bravest fighters, those who closed with the worgs alongside of Otto, are alive, but unconscious, having been outside of the webbing. Unfortunately, among those, some, such as the dwarves, have been slain while lying unconscious. What caused Pavel to don a disguise and start talking to the hobgoblin was the fact that the remaining hobgoblin was slaying the unconscious freed slaves, and he feared that Otto would be next.
