We will check on the ship and the people on the surface to make sure everything is quiet in the village. Make sure Lord Xor or Haffrung don't try anything.
Can Furio fit down the shaft in the church? Once down there could he fit into the White Tower and make his way to the 4th level? How does Vishar move around? Just asking, it is probably better for him to help guard the ship for now.
Furio or Vishar could help Colby with skinning the red dragon. They could also help levitate treasure up to the village when we are ready. A storm giant can levitate 30,000 gp in addition to their body weight.
If anything took a critical, Youssef will memorize and cast Mend spells before going to sleep.

I am guessing the upcoming fight will be more spells and less hand-to-hand combat. I'm thinking that many of the bad guys in the temple will have magic resistance, so having Paavo, Trommer and Friedrich loaded with Fly spells to charge flying demons, etc will be very important.

We have one remaining Identify scroll. We can further identify the Ring of Speed, so see if it has any negative side effects, other than the chance of instant death every time it's put on. We can identify Merth's plate mail to see how powerfully enchanted it is. Or we can do the staff, to see what it does.
I feel that the staff won't give us enough to go on without multiple identifications. Regarding the ring, would Trommer or Friedrich wear it, knowing what we know? If you guys won't, then would you if we identified it again and cleared up the additional information?
For Paavo, would he wear Merth's armor without knowing what it does?

How about if Dariel wears the ring of speed? 6 attacks/round. I don't see much point in Nordel wearing the ring for the upcoming assault - most things will probably be immune to normal arrow fire. He does have an 18 CON though. Long term Friedrich is the best bet - high CON and long life. Also I liked the 4 throws per round. That could be nasty.
I did some scenario analysis. With Paavo's +6 on saves against evil and the +3 shield, he should save on anything but a 1 when armor/shield bonuses are beneficial. So Merth's armor won't actually help with saves. Assuming Merth's armor is +2 plate, he would be 20% less likely to get hit compared to the ablative chain mail. With the ablative chain mail he takes -2 on each damage dice. Assuming he is fighting a creature with no damage bonuses, it is statistically better to wear the chain. With +4 damage (e.g. troll claws) it is basically even. Against someone like Trommer it is better to wear the plate.
So Paavo will stick with his armor for now and hope for a +5 shield.
So I guess I vote for doing the ring again.

Will Nordel allow Dan to try on the Belt of Mitra so we can see what happens when it is combined with the ring? Unless Holomir or Infidelbane already know what happens. Assuming inter-party cooperation: the PfE 15' radius of the belt extends to 20' and there's a warm golden glow... but no other noticeable effect. Holomir has no insight beyond combining the items. Dan will try on the vestments. Before doing so he will ask if there is a place in the White Tower he can clean himself up. He would hate to sully these holy clothes. Maybe the gnomes can help. The gnomish facilities are small but serviceable. Before putting on the vestments Dan will attempt to use the Augury Sticks to see if doing so will be harmful. All signs point to "no". Does Infidelbane carry a Holy Avenger? If not is he interested in borrowing the +4 scimitar? I don't think anyone is currently using it. What armor does he use? He prefers his own sword and armor. Though he will take Iskander. Can you do Spell Immunity to Glyph of Warding? Do you need to choose a specific type of glyph or does it work for all glyphs? How about against Fire Shield? Do you need to choose the type? Specific Glyph, specific Fire Shield. Mostly because there are some limitations on this spell that we ignore. Does Holomir have any additional items or information which might aid in the assault? Holomir will commit everything he has: stuff the party can have- a scroll in a bone case containing a protection from elementals spell a scroll folded up in a leather envelope with two clerical spells: flame strike and conjure animals (12th) 5 scrolls with the following spells, one to each, on them: protection from evil (clerical), resist fire, glyph of warding, protection from evil, 10' radius, fire shield (7th) amulet of protection vs. undead (7th level) Tower fixtures the party may use-A statue of a beautiful maiden. If a character is lawful good, he or she may have a 20% chance of performing the equivalent of a commune spell as if cast by a 10th level cleric. This applies to any character, not just clerics. It may be performed successfully by only one character per week. a 5' diameter sphere of mist, It is a clairaudience and clairvoyance spell sphere. It will work 1 - 4 times before recharging. The sphere will allow the viewers to see into 1 - 4 rooms in the dungeon or White Tower (but not in the Tower of Set) or follow 1 living creature for 3. turns. There is a 30% chance that the sphere will show a past occurance in any room or of any creature requested. It currently is blank and featureless. A light spell cast upon it or the light of a light spell falling upon it will activate the sphere. LIBRARY: The room is illuminated by cool, blue light (continual) that emanates from the ceiling. Approximately 500 volumes of the sage variety are to be found herein, dealing with living things and the supernatural. Have we asked Holomir about the Jezulein? Any additional information he has on the cult, the Demonseed or the Temple of Elemental Evil would be much appreciated. Just thinking ahead to after we defeat the minions of Set. Holomir is familiar with the evil elementalist cult -- he knows for a fact that they were destroyed or driven deep underground, either way their power was broken long ago by the Paladins of Mitra. We will check on the ship and the people on the surface to make sure everything is quiet in the village. All's quiet. It's morning. None of the bad guys have shown their faces. Furio and the dervishes are on watch. Can Furio fit down the shaft in the church? He could barely squeeze into the shrine. The trapdoor is only 5' wide. Would require a lot of excavation. Once down there could he fit into the White Tower and make his way to the 4th level? Probably. How does Vishar move around? He's been here since before the cataclysm. He spends his time disguised/illusioned as one of the statues in the Hall of Heroes. For some unknown reason... Vishar could help Colby with skinning the red dragon. They could also help levitate treasure up to the village when we are ready. Furio would help if he could get in there. Vishar is not interested. If anything took a critical, Youssef will memorize and cast Mend spells before going to sleep. Just Youssef himself... How about if Dariel wears the ring of speed? 6 attacks/round. Dariel doesn't wear jewelry. (Spellcaster needs to explicitly say they are identifying an item before it gets identified.)

If that demon boss returns, he will probably bring a new pack of Type I demons with him. Nordel could be very deadly against them. He would be getting 4 shots per round instead of 6, but at point blank range he could probably kill a Type I in 2 rounds. So now the question whether Nordel would risk wearing the Ring of Speed, knowing that it has a chance to kill him if he fails his system shock roll, and also some other unknown additional effects. If he won't wear it, does he think he might wear it if we further identified it and figured out what the unknown effects are?
What armor is Nordel wearing? Would he want to wear Merth's plate until we identify it?

Then Dan will try on the vestments.
Youssef will defer to Colby regarding the use of the Identify scroll.
We should work on a list of yes/no questions for the Commune. If successful we can ask 10 questions. -is the Heart of Law in the dungeon beneath the village of Mitra's Fist? -is it on the first level? -is it on the second level? ...
Does Holomir know if the Dark Tower can be breached in places other than the front gate? Can you Dimension Door into it? Does Passwall have any effect on the outer walls? What about Transmute Rock to Mud?
Have they ever lead a sortie into the Dark Tower? Any idea about the layout?
Dan's spells for the assault: -Resist cold x 3 (Paavo, Friedrich, Trommer) -Light x 2 -Resist fire x 3 (Paavo, Friedrich, Trommer) -Silence 15' Radius x 2 -Prayer x 3 -Castigate -Spell Immunity x 3 (Paavo and Friedrich vs Lightning Bolt, Trommer vs Cone of Cold?)
Can Dariel tell what kind of glyphs protect the Dark Tower?
Do you think we could get Fizzi to cast protection spells on us just before the assault? His spells are going to be much harder to dispel and last a long time. Dariel could serve as transport. If Dariel is willing to take Paavo and Dan to Antioch to discuss the possibility that would be nice.
Does anyone have an extra offensive magic item that Dan could use? He lost the crystal hammer when Ingrid was turned to stone, most of his spells are going to buffing or healing and he is pretty ineffective in melee. He is also fine just hanging in the back.
Youssef is also going to do a number of buffing spells: -fly x 3 -detect invisibility x 3 -strength x ?

What armor is Nordel wearing? I think he's in ultralight platemail +1 but you can check the character sheets I posted earlier in the thread. Then Dan will try on the vestments. They fit well. He looks very priestly. Does Holomir know if the Dark Tower can be breached in places other than the front gate? Can you Dimension Door into it? Does Passwall have any effect on the outer walls? What about Transmute Rock to Mud? No magic they threw against the Dark Tower had any effect. Neither was anybody particularly eager/willing to blindly Dimension Door into the Dark Tower... Have they ever lead a sortie into the Dark Tower? Any idea about the layout? No one who has entered the Dark Tower has returned to tell the tale. Can Dariel tell what kind of glyphs protect the Dark Tower? In fairness, he can only tell you that the gates are magical/trapped. If Dariel is willing to take Paavo and Dan to Antioch to discuss the possibility that would be nice. What's the timeline on this? Is he taking Mary and Friedrich first?

Trommer has the +3 mace of throwing, +3 2-handed sword, and +1 bastard sword of Disruption. He won't need all of them if he is working for Arwan.
What about the Mitra shield with the map? Does it seems a reasonable guess that that it is the clue to the location? I don't recall any of the maps corresponding to the map on the shield. I don't think we searched everywhere on the upper levels.
Does someone whant to use the dreamstone and dream that either Trommer is not claimed by Arwan or even better that the mark of arwan was removed by Mitra. Perhaps it will disappear long enough for Trommer to be revived without having to risk being claimed. I beleive it is a form of a limited wish spell.

Dan will take off the vestments since nothing immediately happens.
I figured the timing was something like: -Dariel takes Mary and Friedrich to Antioch -Dariel returns and gets Paavo and Dan -we ask for an audience with Fizzi -Paavo, Mary and Dariel (if he is inclined) tell Fizzi what is going on -they ask for Friedrich to be raised -they mention the destruction of the bodies of Trommer, Haddiq and Basmadoos and ask for guidance in restoring life to them. they remind Fizzi of the curse of Arawn on Trommer. they mention access to a rod of resurrection. -they describe the impending assault planned against the Dark Tower having defeated the inhabitants of the village and dungeons -they request aid in the form of protection spells (resist cold, resist heat, spell immunity, etc.) to be timed just before the start of the assault -they offer Fizzi the option of joining the assault
What follows depends on the timing and level of Fizzi's generosity.
Did Colby have any interest in trying to use the Well of Eternal Life? We could use the crystal ball to see what is going on there and show Dariel the location. Then Dariel could teleport there with Basmadoos and Haddiq. And then return a couple minutes later. I suppose we could do likewise for Friedrich and Trommer.
I am just making suggestions, it is up the players who control those characters.

Maybe we could scry the Well of Eternal Life and get the attention of the Immortal King for scrying on his domain. Then we could lure him to attack us here, and find a way to get him to start fighting the Dark Tower. I'd love to watch him fight whatever powerful beasties are in there. Maybe some lich-on-lich action.

We should compare the map on shield to the maps we have of the 1st, 2nd and 4th floors. Maybe we can make sense of it now.
Has anyone other than Trommer used the Dreamstone? How exactly does it work? Can you use it while resting for spells or levels? If not then I think Nordel or Azhbar are your best bet.

I think the Dreamstone might only save Trommer for 12 hours, and I think it takes a certain amount of time to take affect. Remember how we used it on Colby and it took an hour or so to wake him up.
Also show the map to Infidelbane, who took a different route from us and might have seen different sections.

Dan will take off the vestments since nothing immediately happens. OK. I figured the timing was something like: -Dariel takes Mary and Friedrich to Antioch -Dariel returns and gets Paavo and Dan -we ask for an audience with Fizzi Dariel can do this. Unfortunately the most holy Fizzi Finnini is deep in meditation at the High Altar. He is at a crucial juncture in his ceremony and cannot be disturbed. It could be a few days. The party is welcome to wait-- the attending lamas will take Friedrich's body for ritual cleansing and anointment. We should compare the map on shield to the maps we have of the 1st, 2nd and 4th floors. Maybe we can make sense of it now. Looking at your map, I don't see it. You can try in session. Has anyone other than Trommer used the Dreamstone? How exactly does it work? Can you use it while resting for spells or levels? If not then I think Nordel or Azhbar are your best bet. Only Trommer has used it. Requires 8 hours of uninterrupted sleep to use. The sleep is not counted as restful. It's a limited Limited Wish - requires the words "I have a dream..."

We will thank the lamas but explain that our time is limited and we need Friedrich raised sooner than that. We'll have Dariel transport us all back.
Paavo will ask Azhbar to use the Dreamstone and wish that Trommer did not have the curse of Arawn.
Paavo will suggest Colby use the crystal ball to scry the Well of Eternal Life - he is the only magic user in the party that has been there. If no one is interested in going there then we will use the rod and scroll on Trommer and Friedrich once everyone has slept.
Paavo and Youssef will sleep for 8 hours. Dan will sleep for 6 hours.

Nordel will wear the ring of speed. He'd like to know the "more" but is willing to wear it without knowing that if we don't have time to identify it before the assault on the black tower.
He will stick with his current +1 ultralight for now.

Paavo will ask Azhbar to use the Dreamstone and wish that Trommer did not have the curse of Arawn. Bear in mind, Azhbar could sleep 8 hours and gain a level. use the crystal ball to scry the Well of Eternal Life The crystal ball displays only static when tuned to that station. we will use the rod and scroll on Trommer and Friedrich once everyone has slept. Seems reasonable (with judicious use of the meditation carpet) the party could rest, level up where applicable, regain all spells and be in marching order within 16 hours - agree? Then it's only a matter of rolling for HPs, stat increase %, resurrection survival, etc. and picking spells - which can be done quickly at the start of the session.

Paavo will ask Azhbar to use the Dreamstone and wish that Trommer did not have the curse of Arawn. Bear in mind, Azhbar could sleep 8 hours and gain a level. I missed that. I guess that leaves Dan, Mary, Colby or Haidar or some NPC. I guess Haidar is the best choice since everyone else needs 6 to 8 hours to regain high level spells. Is Haidar willing to use the Dreamstone? There will still be plenty of time to sleep and memorize his 1st level spells.

Aside from sleeping 8 hours to level up and getting all his spells back, Fin's thinking that aside from complaining a lot he's not helping much. He'd like to pitch in, and now that he knows the entrance to the Dark Tower is trapped/magically barred, he's not so very keen on snooping it out. He's not afraid to die, he just doesn't want to do so for no good reason. And anything that won't tend to personally enrich him isn't necessarily a good reason.
As far as the last Identify, what about the soapstone platter? Is it possible it provides some additional protection from evil or magic?

Is Haidar willing to use the Dreamstone? There will still be plenty of time to sleep and memorize his 1st level spells. Once he has slept restfully, memorized a full load of MU spells, and prayed for a full load of cleric spells, Haidar is happy to use the dreamstone. IIRC, his goal is to dream that Trommer is free from the curse of Arawn. Is that correct? If so, sure, he will try that. Haidar is not eligible to earn XP in the assault on the Black Tower. While he (in character) is happy to risk his life to defeat the vile followers of Set, I (out of character) am more interested in having him survive long enough to get 2nd and 3rd level spells. It looks like finding a clerical trainer may be hard. Is anyone willing to teleport Haidar to somewhere where he can take care of all his pending training, while I play some other character for a while? (Note to DM: If this happens, can I play one of the White Tower's gnomes? I have never played a gnome.)

Surprisingly enough, even if the broadsword was +2, I don't think anyone would use it. While our guys are dead, we have a +2 flail, a +4 scimitar and a flaming saber that is +1 and also does 2d4 fire damage per hit. Out of game, Merth hit for d4+11, right? For some reason I thought he was using a hammer and was otherwise +10 to damage with specialization, strength, weapon enchantment, etc. Could this be a crazy broadsword that did d4+4 instead of 2d4? That would be pretty sweet, but I might be misremembering.

The timing would work better if Haidar used the Dreamstone first. It sometimes takes several hours for the effects to manifest. And if we wait for Haidar to sleep for 4 hours, memorize spells and then sleep for 8 more hours we don't have much of a window before the start of the assault.
I think that in order for Haidar to get a share of the treasure and to get help with training it is important for him to support the rest of the party when we are putting our necks on the line. That might mean standing in the back and using the occasional magic missile or wand of paralyzation, or supplying a needed CLW. I don't see giving him money so he can go train somewhere safe while the rest of fight as a viable option. Other may feel differently.

OK, dreamstone first.
Haidar the character is fine with supporting the party as best he can. Magic missiles, the wand, healing, sure. Smiting vile Set-worshippers, paying his dues as an adventurer, doing his part to help his new-found comrades, sure, absolutely.
Dan the player, on the other hand, has effectively been playing a first-level spellcaster for five months, and I'm getting a bit bored of it, especially now that Haidar is level-capped and isn't even getting XP. I'm not trying to get Haidar anything he doesn't deserve. I'm just thinking about putting him on ice until there's an opportunity for him to train.
If we think we can tidy up the Black Tower and be on our way in a single session, then never mind. If it's going to be another marathon running battle that takes a couple of hours of game time spread over three months of actual play, then I'd prefer to put Haidar on the back burner and play someone else until May or June or whenever we move on from here.

Scott the player can identify with that, Dan. Fin is fun to play mostly because I can let my natural wise-ass side come out...but in truth he's a pretty weak party member and likely won't last long in the Dark Tower. This particular adventure seems tailor-made for fighters, and with weapon specialization rules the AD&D game is more weighted toward the metal-bound sword-slingers in any event. Should Fin croak, which is likely, Scott the player is not very keen on starting over at first level while the survivors will likely be 11th level and/or higher. Would very much like to see if there'd be a way around that house rule but certainly a debate for a different time.
Fin the character thinks it's just fine if Haidar wants to skip out. More loot for Fin. And by the way, I know these very nice anarchist guys could use some help....

(Note to DM: If this happens, can I play one of the White Tower's gnomes? I have never played a gnome.) You could help me run any of the numerous NPCs (gnomes, lammasu, lions of Mitra, Holomir, Grimstone, Vashir, etc.) but there would not be another full experience earning PC. Throw-away characters and red shirts only get half experience. Consider though, Haidar will certainly not earn the gratitude of the White Tower if the party is successful. with weapon specialization rules the AD&D game is more weighted toward the metal-bound sword-slingers in any event. Don't get me started. Should Fin croak, which is likely, Scott the player is not very keen on starting over at first level while the survivors will likely be 11th level and/or higher. Would very much like to see if there'd be a way around that house rule but certainly a debate for a different time. Everyone starts over at 1st level after the TPK.

For some reason I thought he was using a hammer and was otherwise +10 to damage with specialization, strength, weapon enchantment, etc. Could this be a crazy broadsword that did d4+4 instead of 2d4? That would be pretty sweet, but I might be misremembering. Merth did 2d4+11. He hit Trommer for max damage the first time, dropping him to 0. So that sound like a +2 weapon with 18/00 strength and double specialization. It doesn't sound like we are doing any side adventures before the assault: -kill Haffrung -find the third Mitraic artifact -find the Heart of Law -find the druid -visit the Well of Eternal Life So I guess we should try to use the Commune to answer questions about the Dark Tower or about the unidentified magic items. I can't think of many useful questions: -is the entrance to the Dark Tower guarded by a glyph or glyphs of warding? -if yes, is it a glyph of fire? -if no, is it a glyph of cold? -if no, is it a glyph of electricity? -if no, is it a glyph of death? -if no, ... -if not glyphs, is the entrance guarded by a symbol or symbols? -if yes, is it a symbol of death? -if no, is it a symbol of insanity? -if no, ... Actually I am guessing one of the creatures in the Dark Tower is a high level cleric since someone had to raise Avvakris. There was something about this in an earlier thread but I can't find it right now. I guess there could also be a high level magic user as well. Konah the Dissentor we know is a Son of Set (more powerful than Vrednii). A powerful Son of Set and keeper of the Dark Tower. In comparison, Vrednii is but a mere beast, who feeds on the corpses of the sacrificial victims. But Konah is not the true master of the tower, just its most stalwart guardian. Pneusset, Scion of Evil, Prince of Dark Deeds, In Death yet Living, sounds like a lich. Colby saw something that looked like a lich. I suppose he could be a magic user or cleric or magic user/cleric. We could use the Commune to ask if he is/was a cleric and/or magic user. Not sure about Manahath the Chosen. What can Holomir tell us about him? Here is the quote I was looking for: If Avaakris is dead then they'll most likely already be at the Dark Tower, petitioning Konah the Dissentor for an audience with his masters to resurrect him. What else can we ask of the Commune?

OK, Haidar will stick around for the assault. Here's hoping that it only takes another session or two to finish cleaning this place up. I believe I said that cleric (Vashalla) rescued from the jail would train Haidar, provided he had money for the base training costs. If it's any consolation, she detected as not evil. I foolishly (?) assumed that "Uthummaos, the cold breath speaking from dark chasms" was evil. But if not, then Haidar would be fine training with Vashalla. Is the party okay with offering her a ride on the mudship with us, once we are ready to leave this place, so that Haidar can train with both her and Colby while we sail on to wherever we are going next? I assume I am the only one who will be interested in sticking around in the village at that point.
