Fun session. We pulled out all of the big guns which in the end made it lopsided in our favor - even without Paavo, Friedrich, and Mary.
Here are some suggestions for the aftermath if we don't want to immediately continue our pursuit. -Dan can use the carpet of meditation to get Death's Door for Paavo in 30 minutes. -Once Paavo is up he can borrow the flying carpet and return to get the ship. I think we can bring it into town especially if the storm giant is sticking around. then Youssef and Mamnoon could joining the group going underground. that should be a 10 minute flight and 30 minutes back. -strip all downed combatants and add their bodies to the fire (don't want anymore undead), store their gear in the constabulary -collect all belts for exchange with the titan. -detect magic on everything. -place new valuables on the ship to free up encumbrance on characters and in the q-box. -Colby can use the Frostbrand to extinguish the fire on the manor and other building before it spreads -search remaining buildings for occupants and valuables. lock town inhabitants in the constabulary. -have Grimstone search remaining buildings for anymore entrances to the lower levels. use tools from the smithy to nail them shut or have the storm giant level the building to prevent easy egress. set guards on constabulary and manor house. -locate the rest of caravan -alert Dariel to existence of Delilah. maybe he can track her down. I doubt she will be foolish enough to confront the party now. but she may try charming people. -alert Holomir of the battle. Maybe he and the gnomes want to use this opportunity to strike. Or we could coordinate the clearing out of the first floor with them and work our way down. -assist Trommer with binding wounds on everyone. get healing from Cornelius, Dariel, Ingrid, occupants of the white tower (so Dan and Haddiq can retain their spells for later) -decide if we are resting further or pushing on. Haidar could certainly use 8 hours. everything listed can be accomplished in less than 2 hours. I don't know how much healing the remaining townspeople have access to but they only had one cleric left from the fight in the temple and they have taken a lot of damage. maybe they could use the temple to summon help. maybe they can league with other inhabitants of the dungeon while we wait. We could push forward once Paavo is up and Friedrich and Mary arrive and leave the ship where it is. Or we could go immediately and let Dariel lead the charge.

If you recall, Haddiq cast Death's Door on Paavo at the end of the session. Otherwise I like this plan. Colby has a good number of spells left, so and we should press on with Dariel providing backup.

Did Haddiq have Death's Door memorized? Or has the time to memorize and cast it occurred? I say we push on as soon as possible after securing the village.
I am wondering if smoke is filling the first floor of the dungeon as the inn continues to burn. The smoke should either push everyone down deeper or force then up through an exit we control. I suppose they could also shut themselves off behind a well sealed door. It would make it harder for us to explore. If only someone had memorized lasting breath.
Can the DM provide a sitrep for the ship? Has anyone from the caravan shown up? Youssef and Mamnoon may venture forth if Ingrid has some support. They can do the trip in a third of the time by flying.

Haidar could certainly use 8 hours. Well, yes, Haidar does feel a strange urge to sleep for 8 hours. And at the moment his spell load of six, count 'em, six 1st-level spells is down to a grand total of Unseen Servant and, um, yeah. But if the party wishes to press on, he will go with the flow. Did he ever actually see any of the Minions of Set? I think he was unconscious already when they appeared. He's kind of bummed about that, given the backstory about them being responsible for his father's death. He would have liked to see them killed.

The Minions of Set followed us up the stairs into the constabulary. Haidar was certainly conscious again at that point. Assuming Haidar looked back he would have seen them.
Haidar could rest in the White Tower while we wrap up the 1st level. We could come get him when we are done.

I don't think Haidar would wish to rest quietly while the rest of the party takes on the followers of Set without him. He will keep his strange urge to himself. (Always a wise choice, I find.)
If he can find a quiet 15 minutes, while the others are securing the village or collecting belts or whatever, then he'll swap out Unseen Servant for Magic Missile. Otherwise, he'll go forward with what he's got.

It was memorized already, so no extra time was needed. Great. So revised plan with assignments. -Colby uses the Frostbrand to extinguish the fire on the manor and other building before it spreads -Dan alerts Dariel to existence of Delilah. -Dariel scans the area for strong evil. -Colby flies down and alerts Holomir of the battle. Maybe Holomir and the gnomes want to use this opportunity to strike. Or we could coordinate the clearing out of the first floor with them and work our way down. Also ask Holomir about getting healing for the party. -Paavo, Nordel, Grimstone, Azhbar and Basmadoos search remaining buildings for occupants and valuables. Any town inhabitants will be locked in the constabulary. While searching Grimstone checks for secret entrances to the lower levels. Tools from the smithy are used to nail the entrances shut or we have the storm giant level the building to prevent easy egress. -Paavo asks prisoners if any of the caravan people escaped. Also what was done with the wagons and merchandise. -Dan and Haddiq assist Trommer with binding wounds on everyone who needs it. -Cornelius and Dariel provide healing (so Dan and Haddiq can retain their spells for later). -Haidar strips all downed combatants. The storm giant adds their bodies to the fire (don't want anymore undead). Store their gear in the constabulary. -Haidar collects all belts for exchange with the titan. -Dariel detects magic on everything.

I am wondering if smoke is filling the first floor of the dungeon as the inn continues to burn. The smoke should either push everyone down deeper or force then up through an exit we control. That's a lot of volume to fill. Probably won't get much past the temple which is really well ventilated..... Can the DM provide a sitrep for the ship? Has anyone from the caravan shown up? Youssef and Mamnoon may venture forth if Ingrid has some support. They can do the trip in a third of the time by flying. Judging by weather conditions and Chris' percentile dice roll, the ship is approximately 40 minutes away. Moram Infidelbane arrived there two hours ago with half the caravan guard. There's a dozen or so dervish mercenaries at the ship, setting up camp, picketing their horses, etc. Mumchander, the caravan-master, would not be convinced to leave and the rest of the guards/named NPCs stayed behind to carouse at the inn. The paladin left the ship, heading back to the village on foot, his plan to enter the dungeon. The party must have just missed him. Nordel and Trommer can pick up his tracks leading into the stable. He left his warhorse behind to guard the ship. If he can find a quiet 15 minutes, while the others are securing the village or collecting belts or whatever, then he'll swap out Unseen Servant for Magic Missile. There is time between the end of combat and when Friedrich arrives to swap 1st level spells. So revised plan with assignments. Working with maximum efficiency all this can get done in 30 minutes. Colby uses the Frostbrand to extinguish the fire on the manor and other building before it spreads The storm giant, whose name is Furio, tore the burning roof off the manor house. The rest of the building is made of stone and not in danger from the fire. -Dan alerts Dariel to existence of Delilah. -Dariel scans the area for strong evil. After battling the Eater of Corpses, Dariel is definitely on guard for more evil. -Colby flies down and alerts Holomir of the battle. Maybe Holomir and the gnomes want to use this opportunity to strike. Or we could coordinate the clearing out of the first floor with them and work our way down. Also ask Holomir about getting healing for the party. Holomir seems impressed that the party has managed to defeat a Lesser Son of Set. He states, without boast, that he has slain Vrednii on more than one occasion and that the foul Eater of Corpses has always risen again to threaten the tower. If the party wishes to league forces and pledge themselves to the destruction of the Dark Tower, he will admit anybody who isn't evil-aligned to the White Tower - though they'll be subject to the curse. There is healing available in the chapel within the tower or the "Room of Healing" but getting there involves leaving the Hall of Heroes and that dungeon level is extremely dangerous. Holomir seems reluctant to strike out from the White Tower lest the forces of the Dark Tower attack. There is still the wizard to be reckoned with, and he is powerful, and has powerful minions. The dragon, Argon the Conflagrator, could wipe out Holomir's entire war-band. If Avaakris is dead then they'll most likely already be at the Dark Tower, petitioning Konah the Dissentor for an audience with his masters to resurrect him. -Paavo, Nordel, Grimstone, Azhbar and Basmadoos search remaining buildings for occupants and valuables. Any town inhabitants will be locked in the constabulary. The smithy is a little bit smashed and full of "archaic-looking" weapons and armor "of a style that was popular 300 years ago." And there's a cashbox. (see below) The inn, the stables and the attached trade house are on fire. There are six horses and assorted livestock (goat, cow, chicken) scattered about the hillside. The constabulary has seven heavy warhorses corralled out back, supplies for a siege, chains & manacles and the rich clothes, saddles, and gilded weapons valuing around 1000GP. It is evident that war dogs were kennelled in, and roamed, the courtyard of the manor house. They are nowhere to be seen. "The front door to the manor house is locked with a difficult mechanism that is -20% on picking" - but Furio the storm giant kicks it in. "The interior of the house is well furnished to the point of extravagance. Valuables in sight on the first floor include a silver candelabrum (1000GP) and a gem encrusted Tome of the Word and Law of Mitra" (3000GP) - the book seems like a very old relic. The set of furnishings (fine couches, divans, end tables, armoires, etc.) are worth anywhere from 8-15,000GP. Rufo warns "at the top of the stairs is a trap that will spring on a d6 roll of I - 4. A door in the floor will open up and deposit victims downward 25' onto a pile of refuse and do I - 8 points of damage. However, they will end up facing an ochre jelly: AC: 6, move: 3 ", HD: 6, HP: 3 1. There is a 20% chance that victims will end up on top of the jelly." Bypassing the trap, in Avvakris's bed chamber there is found a chest of coins (see below) and "also various documents of no importance that bear wax seals with the impression of a hooded cobra." Under the pillow is hidden a dagger with a poisoned blade. In the modest hovels of the brigands: 40 flasks of oil 6 suits of chainmail 5 suits of leather armor 6 shields 6 shortswords 4 shortbows bolts & arrows a deck of cards and some coins (see below) Total coinage: 46 platinum 529 gold 1136 silver 370 copper Prisoners captured: 4 acolytes of Set brigand leader brigand 3 brigand women Inchana Melkor Stoneteeth (unconscious) -While searching Grimstone checks for secret entrances to the lower levels. Tools from the smithy are used to nail the entrances shut or we have the storm giant level the building to prevent easy egress. Rufo "knows most of the secret entrances to the dungeon. (indicated on the map). He even knows of the trap in Avvakris's stairway" (see above)... Beldar the Sodden is too drunk to add anything useful at this time. -Paavo asks prisoners if any of the caravan people escaped. Also what was done with the wagons and merchandise. Some escaped with the paladin, the rest were taken below along with anything of value. The wagons and draft horses were taken to "an out of sight ravine on Mount Vision." -Dan and Haddiq assist Trommer with binding wounds on everyone who needs it. OK, 3 rounds per binding as they cut bandages and crush herbs at Trommer's precise instruction. -Cornelius and Dariel provide healing (so Dan and Haddiq can retain their spells for later). They'll burn through whatever spells they have. I'll figure out new hit point totals. Dariel already used a Cure Serious and he has to heal himself once. -Haidar strips all downed combatants. The storm giant adds their bodies to the fire (don't want anymore undead). Store their gear in the constabulary. The clerics can, and would probably prefer to, consecrate the bodies rather than barbecuing them. Looting the bodies: 12 broadswords 7 spears 9 halberds 8 light crossbows 8 shortbows 2 clubs 1 battleaxe 25 shields 2 daggers 27 suits of leather armor 6 suits of chainmail 2 studded leather 1 suit of padded armor 15 flasks of oil -Haidar collects all belts for exchange with the titan. One of the prisoners will comment that the titan already checked everyone's belts. -Dariel detects magic on everything. Nothing seems magical amongst the stuff listed above. -Delilah. I doubt she will be foolish enough to confront the party now. but she may try charming people. Turns out Delilah is foolish enough to confront the party. She appears in the town center, waving a white flag, seeking to parley. She'd like to league with the party, catch up on old times, and offers intimate knowledge of the dungeon and its inhabitants. And she still has the infernal arms & armor from Tarterus that Paavo is due for releasing her master.

I believe Haidar is still wearing his original padded armor / flowing robes. Is this location still too hot to be comfortable in chainmail? If not, he will put on one of the looted suits of chainmail. Preferably one that is *not* adorned with images of Set, or snakes, or other ungodly things. Something plain and simple, in white, if available.

The salvaged armor is unadorned. Additionally there is banded mail, splintmail and even platemail in the smithy - it all seems old, but in good repair.

We'll put the coins, the candelabrum, the Tome and the documents in the q-box for now. Paavo will reclaim his shield and gauntlets. He'll offer Trommer the use of the lion-shield of Mitra. If anyone has the extra encumbrance they can take some flasks of oil. We are likely to see more trolls. Go ahead and put 10 flasks in the q-box for now.
Is Grimstone sticking around? He should choose some better armor and whatever weapons and supplies he wants. He is welcome to join us for a share of the treasure or he can help guard the prisoners or he can go hangout with the caravan.
Will Rufo join us underground? We could use a good thief and his knowledge will be valuable. Can he draw maps of the lower levels? What can he tell us about the other inhabitants underground?
Paavo and Dan are certainly willing to league with the White Tower. I think the rest of the party is interested. Can Holomir provide maps of the lower levels? Can he indicate where the Room of Healing is? Where the lair of the dragon is? Can he tell us how to gain entry into the white tower from the lower levels? What about the location of Konah the Dissentor? Can he tell us more about who this is?
How long is Furio willing to stick around?
What is entailed in consecrating the bodies? Is Cornelius willing to do this?

He should choose some better armor and whatever weapons and supplies he wants. He is welcome to join us for a share of the treasure or he can help guard the prisoners or he can go hangout with the caravan. Being a full elf, his armor selection is limited. He'll stick around for a share of treasure and revenge on the wizard Haffrung Helleyes. Will Rufo join us underground? We could use a good thief and his knowledge will be valuable. Can he draw maps of the lower levels? "While he is not bright, Rufo is in no way stupid. He has been down in the tunnels to the deepest level because of his ability as a thief. [However] In the strictest sense, Rufo is not a thief ... his abilities come from centuries of avoiding his masters. He also is completely illiterate. Rufo will try to help adventurers in any way he can, but he must be forced into the crypts, temples or the dark tower." He can probably direct the party to the lower levels. What can he tell us about the other inhabitants underground? Avvala, Avvakris' daughter, is a priestess of Set. Her consort, Sinstar the Sly, has a strange power over the rats in the dungeon. Rufo does not know where they lair. Three dumb giants guard the stairs between the first and second level. Ishpemo the Terrible runs the jail. No love is lost between him and Merth the Sheriff. Ishpemo has a couple goons - Midod and Onoch the Belly. Gnorsch Bloodtongue has a band of goblin raiders and wargs near the lower temple. Berkam Shem is an evil mage on the second level, also near the lower temple. He controls a number of orcs, an evil-dispositioned goat and a pack of jackals lead by a man-jackal. Rufo seems deathly afraid of the wizard Haffrung Helleyes, whom he says has a suite on the third and fourth level. The wizard takes many forms and dominates the wills of lesser men. He has many beasts at his command - carnivorous apes, trolls and other, stranger things. He is always accompanied by a formidable entourage of mage-apprentices and warriors, some of whom are more than a match for any of Merth's deputies - Rufo warns the party in particular of Argol Bargol, Tirian of Asalbar and Halphred Bloodgusher, who are deadly fighters... Can Holomir provide maps of the lower levels? Can he indicate where the Room of Healing is? Where the lair of the dragon is? Can he tell us how to gain entry into the white tower from the lower levels? What about the location of Konah the Dissentor? He can draw the layout of the old fortress of Mitra's Fist, which was buried in the ensuing conflict when the Dark Tower appeared. Can he tell us more about who this is? A powerful Son of Set and keeper of the Dark Tower. In comparison, Vrednii is but a mere beast, who feeds on the corpses of the sacrificial victims. But Konah is not the true master of the tower, just its most stalwart guardian. How long is Furio willing to stick around? Furio is concerned that the party is so weak and puny, like newborn baby infants, with no muscle definition. So he is going to stick around for a while. What is entailed in consecrating the bodies? Is Cornelius willing to do this? In this case really just flavor text. Probably the UA spell Ceremony. Cornelius hasn't performed the funerary rites in twenty odd years but he would be happy to do so. "Isn't it strange," the senile priest mutters, "that the village has had no births or deaths in so long... something evil must be afoot..." Paavo wants nothing to do the Delilah. He would prefer to send her back to Tarterus. Can we all attack her before she teleports away? Hits from Paavo, Trommer, Basmadoos, Azhbar and Dariel should be enough to kill her. Seems fairly unlikely that Trommer, Paavo, Basmadoos and Azhbar would be able to close on a flying creature attempting to avoid melee that can Teleport at will. But she gets the hint, rolls her eyes at Dariel, and disappears. Does this include the old-fashioned armor and weaponry in the smithy? None of it is magical.

While they are hanging out in the back of the party, Youssef will ask Murkaganth whether he is immune to the effects of lightning bolts since he is able to produce them as a breath weapon. Youssef will explain that a number of the party are able to create lightning bolts via spell or magic item. If we were to come across the red dragon in the lower levels, maybe we could support him by casting lightning bolts while he fought the vile beast. Just a thought.
[In reading the description of the bronze, silver and gold dragons, I think the ability to change form is independent of spell ability. As a an old dragon, Murkey wouldn't even have access to 4th level spells.]

[In reading the description of the bronze, silver and gold dragons, I think the ability to change form is independent of spell ability. On the other hand, all the metallic dragons described as polymorphing eventually gain 4th level spells...

(Paavo) will offer Trommer the use of the lion-shield of Mitra. Does Trommer want to use this shield? Or would he like to use Dan's +1 shield when not using the anti-magic shield? Paavo is going to stick with the elephant shield at least until the lion shield is identified.

We had just killed a cockatrice after taking out some orc crossbowmen.
Regarding the first floor, I don't think it is quite cleared out. I remembered after the fact that there was some sort of secret (illusory?) door in the room where we left Murkaganth to memorize spells. And there was that room full of rotting corpses. The smell was overpowering but there is probably something hidden in there as well. Also it seems likely that Avvala, Avvakris' daughter and priestess of Set, and her consort, Sinstar the Sly, hang out somewhere back in the rat tunnels. Maybe the gnomes would be willing go in after them. Or some high powered mage could polymorph and investigate the caves.
But right now I don't think there is any reason to reverse course.

Well I think we have now encountered many of these individuals. We should probably dispose of the bodies if we are planning on retreating for an extended period. No need to give them additional fodder to create undead. Or allow them to be raised. There is probably a secret door in the temple that leads back to the other part of the second floor where the prisons are. We should probably collect the jailers and take them up to the village with us. Assuming they are still there.

Argol Bargol was definitely one of the 2 fighters we killed accompanying the mages. I can't recall the other names, although Bloodgusher rings a bell. Could the 12+ level magic user be Helleyes himself? Or is that wishful thinking?
Is Paavo cool with burning the bodies to keep them from resurrection?

Is Paavo cool with burning the bodies to keep them from resurrection? I don't know about Finnish practices, but for what it's worth, cremation was a distinctly Good Thing among the Norse. Wikipedia quotes from a Norse saga: "Thus he (Odin) established by law that all dead men should be burned."

I was thinking of something more expedient. If Dariel will do us the service, he could transport everyone including the corpses back to the village. Cornelius could then consecrate the bodies.
Alternatively, Mamnoon could move the bodies to the elemental plane of fire.
Failing that, we put the dead goblins, orcs and wargs in to the iron sphere corridor. The human corpses, we carry up to the village.
Regarding the magic user. I was thinking maybe he was using projected image. But an image doesn't take damage. We did appear to kill the magic user. And some of his items were destroyed. His bodyguards were trying to escape with the bodies. It certainly doesn't hurt to hold onto the body. We can ask Grimstone if that looks like the magic user he encountered.

3rd level: Animate Dead is easily prevented by consecrating the bodies. 5th level: Raise Dead is fairly easily prevented by dismemberment. 7th level: Resurrection is harder to prevent as even burning might still leave some viable remains. Alternatively, Mamnoon could move the bodies to the elemental plane of fire. That made me laugh. We can ask Grimstone if that looks like the magic user he encountered. Grimstone has never seen this man before but says he's wearing the wizard's robes.

Grimstone has never seen this man before but says he's wearing the wizard's robes. "The wizard takes many forms" so that could be him. I guess it really doesn't matter, as we should still always be prepared for lots of big bad guys. If we burn a stack of bodies, it would probably be tough to identify a particular one from the clump of ashes.
