It is probably easier from an accounting standpoint to liquidate everything first. Then everyone can use their own funds (~300 gp) to purchase whatever they want. Since horses can be sold at full value you don't lose anything.
Of course having a horse can be as much of a problem as a benefit. Who watches it when you go into a dungeon? You have to worry about stabling it and feeding it. Horses cannot move stealthily. Unless we have some long over land trips planned I would suggest holding off for now.

Mabey a saddle as well, but that is second to the color concern

Where are we going after this escapade. If we are going someplace else maybe we could sell the items of disputed value there

Looking through the DMG, there are optional flanking and facing rules that look interesting. The facing rules basically outline that a shield is only useable vs your front and the side of your shield arm, and that a creature to your rear gets advantage on the attack. Your facing is determined after your move until the start of your next turn.

Your facing is determined after your move until the start of your next turn. Are they taking into account the use of miniatures/battlemat? Sometimes they don't.

Yes. There are even different rules for squares or hexes.
