Cool. We will purchase 5 jars big enough to hold 3 applications each. We will give a jar to Paavo, Trommer, Friedrich, Mary and Basmadoos.

Paavo will give the Raise Dead scroll to Trommer to avoid having more than 10 magic items. I am not sure that counts against his total since he can't use it and is only carrying it until we are reunited with Dan. He will also give the rose colored healing potion to Basmadoos. Potions aren't good for him to have given his dispel magic power with the Iskander. If the light stones happened to be de-magicked that is fine.

See Keoghtom's Ointment, DMG p. 149. Each application is either cure disease, cure poison or cure 9-12 h.p.

So since magic doesn't work in the bottle, a magic user is basically a poorly armored man-at-arms. Do you think them wearing armor here is a bad idea? If we run across some padded armor or better I would suggest they wear it. It may be that later on magic is available and then they would need to remove it in order to cast spells again. Are there other draw backs? Would saving throws be affected? Would they not get x.p. if they are wearing armor?

I have wondered if a magic user is stuck somewhere for a long time where they don't have access to their spells but they continue to adventure, should they be able to get better at fighting more quickly. There is no mechanism in the game for that. But it stands to reason that if the only thing you are doing is fighting with a weapon shouldn't you gain experience like a fighter even if you don't have the stats to dual class. I am talking like being stuck on an island for years. Not like spending a couple of days without your spells.

There is something of a precedent. Gary Gygax's son had a magic-user (Erac's Cousin) who got stuck on Mars and couldn't use magic, so he became proficient with swords...

There are presumably some game balance reasons for having the restrictions on dual classing. If we waive them, we should impose some new restrictions to balance out the waivers.

Some possible examples, off the top of my head (and therefore possibly only half baked):

You can choose to dual class even without adequate stats, but if you do, then for each point of ability score that you are short of the requirement, you lose one level in your original class.

You can choose to return to your original class, but if you do, you lose the HP you gained by progressing in your second class.

I wasn't intending to reopen the debate. The situation in the bottle just got me thinking about it. I doubt we will be there long enough to matter. Though this would be a good place to train people in advanced weapon proficiencies. It costs a fair amount to house the party in the city for the duration of training. We could spend 2 weeks training Basmadoos and that would only count for a day and a half in the real world.

This logic is backwards.

I'm fairly confident that the Rogue's Gallery has him listed as dual-classed MU/F. Though, as pointed out at www.dragonsfoot.org/forums/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=29123&start=0, there's problems with that.

Suggestions for Mary and Basmadoos to do while we were away in Antioch.

Basmadoos:
-purchase silver crossbow bolts
-ask crossbow experts regarding repeater crossbow. any interesting is purchasing schematics.
-determine rate of fire/rate of loading of repeater
-see if you can purchase bolt clips for the repeater. so you can change a whole clip of bolts at once instead of loading each bolt separately into the repeater.

Mary:
-review instructions for armband. see if they make any sense.
-if not study for a day.
-if not study for a week.
-if not consult College, Library, metal smiths, jewelers, clock makers(?), sages

Dan asks Colby about the potion of raw mana. Does that appear to be inert now? That is supposed to be some sort of raw magic. Maybe it still has some potency that would allow him to access his abilities for a short time. Or maybe it could be rubbed on a magic item to give it limited functionality.

It is interesting - we have been somewhere where everything detected as magic and we are now somewhere where no magic is detectable. An odd dichotomy. I wonder where we will fare better. At least there are no fairies here.

The potion of raw mana is wild magic, similar to Nahal's Reckless Dweomer. That sounds like a good idea to test if it's retained any magical properties.

I think the repeater is 3 shots every 2 rounds, but I don't recall.

-ask crossbow experts regarding repeater crossbow. any interesting is purchasing schematics.

It's not that unusual a weapon, they're crafted in the Eastern lands. The crossbow itself would sell for 200 dinar.

Repeating Crossbow (cho-ku-no)
The cho-ku-no is a repeating light crossbow, capable of firing several bolts before needing reloading. Mounted on the top is a magazine that can hold up to 6 quarrels. The cocking and reloading action is worked by a single lever, pushed forward and then pulled back. This allows a faster rate of fire (2) than normal. Up to two quarrels can be reloaded in the magazine per round. Thus three rounds are required to completely reload the cho-ko-nu. A character cannot fire and reload in the same round. It is heavier than a normal crossbow and has a poorer range.

Mary is intelligent enough to understand the instructions. The Nine-Eyed Sage was very precise and his serpent-torsoed secretary has excellent hand-writing. There is, among other mechanical fiddlings, a damaged crystal to be extracted and replaced. She's not sure she is nimble enough (11 Dex) to perform such an operation assuming she was able to obtain a replacement crystal.

Any chance we can get this before Sunday? I realize it probably won't matter but in case it does it is easier to do the accounting out of game.

I'll see what I can do. Realistically could be posted Saturday.. or brought as a list on Sunday. But the party has ample funds/pearls if there are things to purchase or identify. The actual accounting can take place after the fact.
